Evaluating methods for testing publication bias in meta-analyses with confounding covariates: A simulation study.

Selective publication of favorable results can bias meta-analytic estimates and threaten the validity of meta-analyses. Many methods that detect and adjust for publication bias perform poorly under substantial between-study heterogeneity. Heterogeneity complicates publication bias assessment because study characteristics may be associated with both effect size estimates and standard errors. These characteristics can induce an effect-precision association that regression-based diagnostics may misattribute to selective publication when such characteristics are omitted. However, it remains unclea

Homocysteine and coronary heart disease: meta-analysis of MTHFR case-control studies, avoiding publication bias.

BACKGROUND: Moderately elevated blood levels of homocysteine are weakly correlated with coronary heart disease (CHD) risk, but causality remains uncertain. When folate levels are low, the TT genotype of the common C677T polymorphism (rs1801133) of the methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase gene (MTHFR) appreciably increases homocysteine levels, so "Mendelian randomization" studies using this variant as an instrumental variable could help test causality. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Nineteen unpublished datasets were obtained (total 48,175 CHD cases and 67,961 controls) in which multiple genetic varian

Associations between asymmetry and human attractiveness: Possible direct effects of asymmetry and signatures of publication bias.

BACKGROUND: Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), reflecting developmental instability (DI), may honestly signal individual quality and relate to human attractiveness and measures of sexual behaviour. The evolutionary importance of these associations, however, critically depends on the role of DI in driving these correlations. A direct effect of FA reduces the role of DI. AIM: To explore the direct effects of FA in determining human attractiveness, comparing the strength of associations whether the asymmetries could be observed during the attractiveness ratings or not. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Literature

Correcting for publication bias in multivariate and multilevel meta-analysis: A multivariate step function selection model approach.

Univariate meta-analysis models assume that all effect sizes are independent. This assumption is violated if, for example, two outcomes are reported in a study of interest to the meta-analyst or a study reports multiple experiments administered by the same researchers. The multivariate and multilevel meta-analysis models allow modeling dependent effect sizes. These two models have recently gained in popularity among meta-analysts in psychology, where one of the largest threats to validity of meta-analysis is publication bias where a selective subset of studies remain unpublished. We extend the

How would publication bias distort the estimated effect size of prototypic antidepressants in the forced swim test?

This commentary aims to discuss the impact of publication bias on the estimated effect of prototypic antidepressants in the forced swim test (FST). A systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) recently reported by Kara et al. (2018) showed that selected prototypic antidepressants reduced immobility time of mice in the FST across a variety of experimental designs. Despite differences in the procedures for SRMA, these results resemble the interim data collected by our research group according to a protocol deposited in the Systematic Review Facility (http://syrf.org.uk/) and Open Science Framewo

Publication bias is present in blood and marrow transplantation: an analysis of abstracts at an international meeting.

Publication bias is the preferential publication of research with positive results, and is a threat to the validity of medical literature. Preliminary evidence suggests that research in blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) lacks publication bias. We evaluated publication bias at an international conference, the 2006 Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR)/American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) "tandem" meeting. All abstracts were categorized by type of research, funding status, number of centers, sample size, and direction of the results.

Publication Bias in Epidemiological Studies of Malocclusions in Mexican Children and Teenagers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the publication bias of the reported prevalence of malocclusions in Mexican children and adolescents. BACKGROUND: Publication bias determination is crucial in a systematic review, helping to ensure the conclusions' validity and reliability. Nevertheless, without accurate knowledge of disease prevalence and patterns, the health system risks inefficiency, inequity, and failure to meet the population's needs. On the other hand, malocclusions can impair proper chewing efficiency, contributing to digestive alterations, and nutritional deficiencies among other functional, ps

Systematic review of Aedes aegypti control trials suggests publication bias related to author disclosure of conflicts of interest.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever, resulting in a large global disease burden. Vector control remains the key strategy to prevent transmission due to the absence of widely available vaccines or treatments. Many studies evaluate control approaches, yet only a subset are published in peer-reviewed journals. One potential contributor to selective reporting, or publication bias, could be a conflict of interest (COI), defined as employment by a for-profit company conducting the trial, or a financial interest tie

Publication bias in pharmacogenetics of adverse reaction to antiseizure drugs: An umbrella review and a meta-epidemiological study.

Publication bias may lead to a misestimation in the association between pharmacogenetic biomarkers (PGx) and antiseizure drug's adverse effects (AEs). We aimed to assess its prevalence in this field. We searched for systematic reviews assessing PGx of antiseizure drug's AEs. For each unique association between a PGx, a drug and its AE, we used the available odds ratio (ORs) to generate corresponding funnel plots. We estimated the prevalence of publication bias using visual inspections and asymmetry tests. We explored the impact of publication bias using ORs adjusted for potential publication b

Evidence of taxonomic bias in public databases: The example of the genus Borrelia.

The taxon names used in public databases are of critical importance in all areas of biology because they are needed for linking organisms to sequence data and other information. Since most users of taxonomic classifications may be unprepared for dealing with synonyms, the names that are preferred in such databases are of high impact. Using the genus Borrelia as an example, we here show how simplistic approaches for determining the preferred synonym may lead to biases regarding the preferences for taxonomic opinions. We highlight that in this and other cases where genera were split, for reverti

Role of editorial and peer review processes in publication bias: analysis of drug trials submitted to eight medical journals.

BACKGROUND: Publication bias is generally ascribed to authors and sponsors failing to submit studies with negative results, but may also occur after submission. We evaluated whether submitted manuscripts on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with drugs are more likely to be accepted if they report positive results. METHODS: Manuscripts submitted from January 2010 through April 2012 to one general medical journal (BMJ) and seven specialty journals (Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Gut, Heart, Thorax, Diabetologia, and Journal of Hepatology) were included, if

Lost in submission? Investigating publication bias in regional anaesthesia: A pilot case study of the erector spinae plane block.

BACKGROUND: The Erector Spinae Plane (ESP) block is a regional anaesthesia technique with a growing range of clinical applications due to its short learning curve, low complication rate, and effectiveness. However, publication bias can distort the perceived efficacy of interventions, especially when studies with negative or inconclusive results remain unpublished. The real extent of publication bias in ESP-related clinical research currently remains unclear. METHODS: We searched ClinicalTrials.gov on 2 February 2025 using the terms «Erector Spinae Plane Block» and «ESP block», and obtained 67

Tranexamic acid in total hip arthroplasty: A recursive cumulative meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and assessment of publication bias.

INTRODUCTION: TXA has been evaluated in THA in several randomized controlled trials for the past 16 years. We attempted to evaluate the trends in the evidence using recursive cumulative meta-analysis and publication bias using Rosenthal and 'Trim and Fill' methods. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled clinical trials comparing TXA with either placebo (or no TXA administration) or TXA, administered through different routes in patients with osteoarthritis or osteonecrosis of the hip who underwent THA. We considered the total number of patients requiring blood tr

Publication bias in antipsychotic trials: an analysis of efficacy comparing the published literature to the US Food and Drug Administration database.

BACKGROUND: Publication bias compromises the validity of evidence-based medicine, yet a growing body of research shows that this problem is widespread. Efficacy data from drug regulatory agencies, e.g., the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), can serve as a benchmark or control against which data in journal articles can be checked. Thus one may determine whether publication bias is present and quantify the extent to which it inflates apparent drug efficacy. METHODS AND FINDINGS: FDA Drug Approval Packages for eight second-generation antipsychotics-aripiprazole, iloperidone, olanzapine, pal

Temporal evolution of publication bias in drug safety assessment: A case study on association between osteonecrosis of the jaw and bisphosphonates.

OBJECTIVES: The association between bisphosphonates (BP) and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has been studied since 2006. However, meta-analyses conducted in 2014 and 2024 detected publication bias. Although it is often assumed that such bias diminishes over time, possibly due to the delayed publication of non-significant results, this trend has not been empirically confirmed in medicine. The aim of this study was to assess how publication bias has evolved in this safety context over time. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted on studies assessing the association between BP and ONJ. A cum

Liver transplant after donation from controlled circulatory death versus brain death: A UNOS database analysis and publication bias adjusted meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Donation after circulatory death (DCD) is an increasingly utilized alternative to donation after brain death (DBD) to expand the liver donor pool. We compared the outcomes of liver transplant (LT) after DCD versus DBD. METHODS: A PRISMA-compliant systematic literature review was performed using the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases (end-of-search-date: July 2, 2020). US outcomes were analyzed using the UNOS database (February, 2002-September, 2020). Pooled hazard ratios (HR) for patient and graft survival were obtained through random effect meta-analyses and adjusted

The relationship of publication language, study population, risk of bias, and treatment effects in acupuncture related systematic reviews: a meta-epidemiologic study.

BACKGROUND: There are debates in acupuncture related systematic reviews and meta-analyses on whether searching Chinese databases to get more Chinese-language studies may increase the risk of bias and overestimate the effect size, and whether the treatment effects of acupuncture differ between Chinese and non-Chinese populations. METHODS: In this meta-epidemiological study, we searched the Cochrane library from its inception until December 2021, and identified systematic reviews and meta-analyses with acupuncture as one of the interventions. Paired reviewers independently screened the reviews

How publication bias overestimates the risk of atypical femoral fracture and osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with bisphosphonate use: A meta-epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVES: Bisphosphonates are widely used to treat osteoporosis, bone cancer, Paget's disease, and hypercalcemia to reduce fracture risk. Observational studies have highlighted rare but serious adverse events (AE). Some meta-analyses have found evidence of publication bias, but rarely examined its impact or addressed it in their conclusions. Clinical guidelines are often based on meta-analyses and published literature, which may potentially bias the risk-benefit balance of bisphosphonates. This study assessed the presence and impact of publication bias in bisphosphonate safety evaluations.
