STUDY OBJECTIVES: The coexistence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a single individual, also known as overlap syndrome (OVS), is associated with higher cardiovascular risk and mortality than either OSA or COPD alone. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesized that patients with OVS have elevated systemic inflammatory biomarkers relative to patients with either disease alone, which could explain greater cardiovascular risk observed in OVS.
METHODS: We included 255 participants in the study, 55 with COPD alone, 100 with

BACKGROUND: The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) update 2023 proposed new definitions of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and COPD exacerbation. However, an agreement on the definitions has not been made, either internationally or domestically. This study aimed to reach an agreement between experts on the new definitions of COPD and COPD exacerbation in South Korea.
METHODS: A modified Delphi method was used to make an agreement on the definitions of COPD and COPD exacerbation proposed by the GOLD update 2023. We performed two rounds of the survey incl

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is often exacerbated by various viruses and bacteria, leading to acute episodes of worsening respiratory symptoms, which contribute significantly to the morbidity and mortality associated with COPD. Consequently, vaccination against these pathogens is recommended by numerous guidelines to safeguard COPD patients from adverse health outcomes. The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) recommendation advocates for vaccination against influenza, Streptococcus pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), severe acute respiratory

Antioxidants represent an attractive therapeutic avenue for individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Cigarette smoke, the major cause of COPD, contains very high concentrations of gaseous and soluble oxidants that can directly induce cell injury and death. Furthermore, particulate matter in cigarette smoke activates lung macrophages that subsequently attract neutrophils. Both neutrophils and macrophages from the lungs of cigarette smokers continuously release large amounts of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide through the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)

The introduction of culture-independent techniques for the microbiological analysis of respiratory samples has confirmed that the respiratory system hosts a large number of microorganisms, which include a wide range of bacteria. The regular exposure to tobacco smoke changes the microbiome in healthy smokers, first in the oropharynx, increasing the presence of a restricted number of genera which attain high relative abundance, a pattern that may be considered as dysbiosis. In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), microbiome analyses of sputum samples have demonstrated an important decli

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) often experience comorbid conditions. The most common comorbidities that have been associated with COPD include cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, metabolic disorder, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression, skeletal muscle dysfunction, cachexia, gastrointestinal diseases, and other respiratory conditions. Not only are comorbidities common but they also considerably influence disease prognosis and patients׳ health status, and are associated with poor clinical outcomes. However, perusal of literature indicates that little has been done

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchiectasis are two different but related diseases that occur separately, but can coexist. In this review, we will examine the recent research regarding patients with COPD who have coexisting bronchiectasis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent research has focused on defining distinct COPD phenotypes with the ultimate goal of changing the outcomes using tailored therapies. A frequent exacerbator phenotype has been identified. COPD patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa are a phenotype with worse outcomes. Patients with coexisting COPD a

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic obstructive lung condition, diagnosed in patients with dyspnoea, chronic cough or sputum production and/or a history of risk factor exposure, if their postbronchodilator forced expiratory lung volume in 1 second (FEV1)/forced vital lung capacity (FVC) ratio is less than 0.70, according to the international GOLD (Global Initiative for Obstructive Lung Disease) criteria.Inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) medications are now recommended for COPD only in combination treatment with long-acting beta2-agonists (LABAs), and only for patie

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchiectasias are two of the most frequent and underdiagnosed diseases of the airways. The association between these two entities can be established from different points of view. On the one hand, because of their high prevalence, the co-occurrence of COPD and bronchiectasias in the same patient is not unusual. On the other hand, recent studies have observed an association between COPD and bronchiectasias, given that more than 50% of patients with moderate-severe COPD show bronchiectasias unexplained by other causes that could provoke an exces

The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is increasing worldwide, mainly due to the increase in women. In developed countries, COPD in women is mainly a result of exposure to tobacco smoke and in developing countries to inhalation of biomass combustion products. Underdiagnosis of COPD is more common in women since this disease has classically been associated with men. Moreover, COPD in women shows certain differential features, such as a greater expression of aspects related to perception (dyspnea and health-related quality of life), a high prevalence of malnutrition, anx

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma are both highly prevalent inflammatory diseases characterized by airway obstruction with distinct pathogenic mechanisms and different degrees of response to antiinflammatory therapy. However, forms of presentation that show overlap between both diseases and which are not clearly represented in clinical trials are frequently encountered in clinical practice. These patients may show accelerated loss of pulmonary function and have a worse prognosis. Therefore their early identification is essential. Biomarkers such as bronchial hyperreactivity or n

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory disease characterized by permanent and progressive airway obstruction. Cigarette smoking is the main cause responsible for COPD although only 15 to 25 % of smokers develop COPD. Mechanisms underlying COPD pathogenesis are not fully understood. Structural abnormalities in small airways (bronchioles < 2mm in diameter) are the main determinants of airway obstruction; obstruction of these bronchioles is related to increase in airway wall thickness (associated with peribronchiolar fibrosis) and to plugging by mucus exudates. UNLABELLED: COPD is a preventable and treatable disease caused by exposure to tobacco smoke and poisonous gases. It is characterised by progressive obstruction of the airflow, irreversible once lesions occur in the parenchyma. This article aims to systematically review the disease and its treatment.
DISCUSSION: Smoking is the main cause of COPD and leads to decreased oxygenation via lung hyperinflation with reduced airflow as a systemic inflammatory process. This reduces resistance to fatigue of the skeletal musculature, leading to hypoxemia, decreased peripheral blood flow and also miscarria

Hispanics are individuals whose ancestry can be traced to Spain and/or areas previously under Spanish control (e.g., Mexico, Puerto Rico). They are a rapidly growing subset of the population of the United States and are quite diverse in their racial ancestry, country of origin, area of residence, socioeconomic status, tobacco use, and access to health care. Current evidence suggests that the prevalence and morbidity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) vary widely among Hispanic-American nations, with similar but limited findings among Hispanic subgroups in the United States. Malnutrition in patients with COPD is associated with an impaired pulmonary status, reduced diaphragmatic mass, lower exercise capacity, and higher mortality rate when compared with adequately nourished individuals with COPD. Deterioration in patients with COPD may be the result of malnutrition. In addition, malnutrition could be a sign of other factors directly altered by the disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity throughout the world. It is the only cause of death among the top 10 causes that is increasing and is expected to become the third leading cause of death in the world by 2020. A diagnosis of COPD should be considered in any patient with previous exposure to risk factors for the disease and/or the presence of chronic cough, sputum production, or dyspnea. Patients with COPD are categorized into five stages based on their pulmonary function tests and symptoms. Smoking cessation is the single most effective wa

The control of breathing in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) follows the same basic principles as in normal subjects, both awake and asleep, with an expected lower feedback response during sleep. This impacts nocturnal gas exchange and sleep quality most profoundly in patients with more severe COPD, as multiple factors come into play. Hypoventilation causes the most important gas-exchange alteration in COPD patients, leading to hypercapnia and hypoxemia, especially during rapid-eye-movement sleep, when marked respiratory muscle atonia occurs. The hypoxia leads to incr

OBJECTIVE: To discuss current therapies for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and their efficacy and use according to current treatment guidelines.
SUMMARY: The overall approach to the management of stable COPD is a stepwise increase in treatment, depending on disease severity. Inhaled bronchodilators are the cornerstone of symptomatic management of COPD and include beta 2-agonists, anticholinergics, and methylxanthines. Short-acting beta 2-agonist bronchodilators (e.g., albuterol) have a quick onset of action and are useful for rescue. Long-acting bronchodilators

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major global health problem and is predicted to become the third most common cause of death by 2020. Apart from the important preventive steps of smoking cessation, there are no other specific treatments for COPD that are as effective in reversing the condition, and therefore there is a need to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms that could lead to new therapeutic strategies. The development of experimental models will help to dissect these mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level. COPD is a disease characterized by progressive a
