PURPOSE: Humans make smooth pursuit eye movements to bring the image of a moving object onto the fovea. Although pursuit accuracy is critical to prevent motion blur, the eye often falls behind the target. Previous studies suggest that pursuit accuracy differs between motion directions. Here, we systematically assess asymmetries in smooth pursuit.
METHODS: In experiment 1, binocular eye movements were recorded while observers (n = 20) tracked a small spot of light moving along one of four cardinal or diagonal axes across a featureless background. We analyzed pursuit latency, acceleration, peak

When we view the world around us, we constantly move our eyes. This brings objects of interest into the fovea and keeps them there, but visual sensitivity has been shown to deteriorate while the eyes are moving. Here we show that human sensitivity for some visual stimuli is improved during smooth pursuit eye movements. Detection thresholds for briefly flashed, colored stimuli were 16% lower during pursuit than during fixation. Similarly, detection thresholds for luminance-defined stimuli of high spatial frequency were lowered. These findings suggest that the pursuit-induced sensitivity increas

It has been shown that, during 5 seconds of fixation, an individual with congenital nystagmus (CN) can repeatedly (beat-to-beat) foveate (SD = 12.87 minarc) and maintain low retinal slip velocities (SD = 118.36 minarc/sec). Smooth pursuit data from several CN subjects showed that eye velocities during these foveation intervals approximated target velocity. Despite some claims that CN is caused by absent or "reversed" smooth pursuit, those with CN hardly ever experience oscillopsia or exhibit any accompanying symptoms of such deficits in pursuit; they are able to master sports requiring trackin

Since smooth pursuit eye movements can be used without calibration in spontaneous gaze interaction, the intuitiveness of the gaze interface design has been a topic of great interest in the human-computer interaction field. However, since most related research focuses on curved smooth-pursuit trajectories, the design issues of linear trajectories are poorly understood. Hence, this study evaluated the user performance of gaze interfaces based on linear smooth pursuit eye movements. We conducted an experiment to investigate how the number of objects (6, 8, 10, 12, or 15) and object moving speed (

Smooth pursuit eye movements (pursuit) are used to minimize the retinal motion of moving objects. During pursuit, the pattern of motion on the retina carries not only information about the object movement but also reafferent information about the eye movement itself. The latter arises from the retinal flow of the stationary world in the direction opposite to the eye movement. To extract the global direction of motion of the tracked object and stationary world, the visual system needs to integrate ambiguous local motion measurements (i.e., the aperture problem). Unlike the tracked object, the s

Patients with schizophrenia as well as individuals with high levels of schizotypy are known to have deficits in smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM). Here, we investigated, for the first time, the neural mechanisms underlying SPEM performance in high schizotypy. Thirty-one healthy participants [N = 19 low schizotypes, N = 12 high schizotypes (HS)] underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3T with concurrent oculographic recording while performing a SPEM task with sinusoidal stimuli at two velocities (0.2 and 0.4 Hz). Behaviorally, a significant interaction between schizotypy group and

Two rhesus monkeys were trained to track a small moving target in the presence of a moving distractor. The target and distractor were distinguished by their color. Smooth pursuit eye movements were quantified in terms of the latency of the eye movement and the open-loop eye acceleration profile. Smooth pursuit latencies for single targets were on the order of 100 msec. When the target was paired with a distractor moving in the same direction as the target, pursuit latencies decreased to roughly 85 msec. When the target was paired with a distractor moving in the opposite direction, pursuit late

Visual short-term memory (VSTM) was probed while observers performed smooth pursuit eye movements. Smooth pursuit keeps a moving object stabilized in the fovea. VSTM capacity for position was reduced during smooth pursuit compared with a condition with eye fixation. There was no difference between a condition in which the items were approximately stabilized on the retina because they moved with the pursuit target and a condition in which the items moved across the retina because they were stationary in space. The reduction of capacity for position was eliminated when miniature items were prese

Effective sigma tracking, i.e., apparent movement perception when slow eye movements are made across a stationary repetitive pattern under stroboscopic illumination, has been shown to be a function of the distance between sequential stimuli (P(s)) and the flash frequency (f(s)). The relationship between these factors and eye velocity ( V (e)) has been formally specified as V (e)= k P(s)f(s)[deg s(-1)], where it has been argued that the value of k, which defines the rate limit for eye velocity, is normally 1, or exceptionally 2 or 3. However, theoretically the limitations on the maximum value f

A number of cortical and subcortical areas are involved in the control of saccades and smooth pursuit, and lesions affecting these areas result in various ocular motor syndromes. Most of these syndromes are relatively subtle and have to be ascertained using recordings, because other brain areas may largely take over the function of a damaged area. Anterior cortical, posterior cortical, large and bilateral cortical, subcortical and degenerative cerebral lesions are successively reviewed. In the anterior part of the cerebral hemisphere, the frontal eye field (FEF), supplementary eye field (SEF)

Smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) abnormalities are commonly seen in Parkinson's disease (PD). Both reduced speed and saccades seen during SPEM, also known as saccadic pursuit (SP), have been studied in PD. A comprehensive literature review analyzed 26 studies of SPEM and PD. It appears that a greater proportion of PD patients have SPEM abnormalities consisting of reduced SPEM gain and/or SP compared to the normal population. It is not clear whether SPEM abnormalities are present early in the disease or begin sometime during disease progression. SPEM abnormalities may be correlated with disea

In multiple sclerosis (MS), randomly located demyelination lesions may involve a large part of the central nervous system and disturb oculomotor activity, including impairment of saccadic and pursuit systems. The aim of the work was to determine the frequency of smooth pursuit disturbances in MS patients and assess the feasibility of various methods for smooth pursuit assessment: the clinical bedside examination and quantitative electrooculographic (EOG) recordings. In addition, we analyzed the effects of age on the results of smooth pursuit tests. Sixty MS patients and 50 volunteers underwent

OBJECTIVE: The smooth pursuit eye movements and fixation ability of children aged 8 to 16 years with Tourette syndrome (TS) were examined.
BACKGROUND: Although several studies have examined the saccadic ability of patients with TS, there have been only a few studies examining pursuit ability in TS.
METHOD: Pursuit gain (eye velocity/target velocity) and intrusive saccades during fixation were measured in children with TS-only, TS+attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and TS+ADHD+obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and in controls (8 to 16 y). Two pursuit tasks and 1 fixation task

Analysis of smooth pursuit by infrared oculography showed normal horizontal smooth eye movement gain in a patient with a unilateral parietooccipital hematoma that involved the internal sagittal stratum and the adjacent tapetum and visual radiation. Normal pursuit toward the lesion is attributed to commissural transfer of visual information from the normal cerebral hemisphere to the intact extrastriate cortex of the visually deprived hemisphere. This pathophysiological correlation indicates that the occiptiomesencephalic projections of the internal sagittal stratum and the peristriate interhemi

The saliency map has played a long-standing role in models and theories of visual attention, and it is now supported by neurobiological evidence from several cortical and subcortical brain areas. While visual saliency is computed during moments of active fixation, it is not known whether the same is true while engaged in smooth pursuit of a moving stimulus, which is very common in real-world vision. Here, we examined extrafoveal saliency coding in the superior colliculus, a midbrain area associated with attention and gaze, during smooth pursuit eye movements. We found that SC neurons from the

Visual motion neurons in the posterior parietal cortex play a critical role in the guidance of smooth pursuit eye movements. Initial pursuit (open-loop period) is driven, in part, by visual motion signals from cortical areas, such as the medial superior temporal area (MST). The purpose of this study was to determine whether adaptation of initial pursuit gain arises because of altered visual sensitivity of neurons at the cortical level. It is well known that the visual motion response in MST is suppressed after exposure to a large-field visual motion stimulus, showing visual motion adaptation.

Human observers see a single mixed color (yellow) when different colors (red and green) rapidly alternate. Accumulating evidence suggests that the critical temporal frequency beyond which chromatic fusion occurs does not simply reflect the temporal limit of peripheral encoding. However, it remains poorly understood how the central processing controls the fusion frequency. Here we show that the fusion frequency can be elevated by extra-retinal signals during smooth pursuit. This eye movement can keep the image of a moving target in the fovea, but it also introduces a backward retinal sweep of t

The origin of the generation of saccadic and smooth-pursuit eye movements has not been proved. The goal of the study reported here was to search for the connection of visuooculomotor reactions--saccades and eye-tracking test--with cerebellar damage. Using electronystagmography, we tested 11 patients treated with aminoglycosides because of pneumonia. After a mean of 21 days of pharmacological therapy, a neurological examination revealed cerebellar disability in all cases. On the basis of our previous studies, we suspected cortical Purkinje cell damage. In all tested patients, saccadic movements

OBJECTIVE: Although childhood-onset schizophrenia is relatively rare, a sizable group of children with severe emotional disturbances have transient psychotic symptoms that fall outside of current syndrome boundaries. The relationship of this group of children to those with childhood-onset schizophrenia and other childhood psychiatric disorders is unclear. In this study, the authors compared smooth pursuit eye tracking, a biological trait marker associated with schizophrenia, of children and adolescents with psychotic disorder not otherwise specified to that of children with childhood-onset sch

Pursuit and vestibular smooth eye movements were measured in patients with lesions of the caudal brainstem tegmentum identified by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), with neuropathological correlation in 1 patient. Contralateral smooth pursuit gain was significantly lower than ipsilateral gain in each patient. Ipsilateral smooth pursuit gain was also subnormal in patients with unilateral pontine damage that caused slowing of ipsilateral saccades. Horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex gain and phase were normal. These quantitative correlations indicate that lesions of t
