Treatment of infestation with Phthirus pubis: comparative efficacies of synergized pyrethrins and gamma-benzene hexachloride.

In recent years there has been a steady increase in the incidence of infestation with Phthirus pubis, a sexually transmitted louse. A recently introduced nonprescription liquid pediculicide, whose major ingredient is 0.3% pyrethrins synergized by 3.0% piperonyl butoxide (RiD), was compared for efficacy and safety with a prescription-only pediculicidal lotion whose major ingredient is 1% gamma-benzene hexachloride (Kwell). Thirty adult man and women with P. pubis infestation were assigned randomly to treatment with either the synergized pyrethrins or gamma-benzene hexachloride. A single 10-min

Pyrethrins combined with piperonyl butoxide (RID) vs 1% permethrin (NIX) in the treatment of head lice.

In a randomized controlled trial, 58 subjects were treated for Pediculus humanus var capitis with either pyrethrins combined with piperonyl butoxide (RID, Pfizer Inc, New York) or 1% permethrin (NIX, Burroughs Wellcome Co, Research Triangle Park, NC); 31 subjects received RID and 27 subjects received NIX. Both products were applied according to manufacturer's directions so that NIX was applied only on the first visit and RID was applied on the first visit and again seven days later. After each treatment with a pediculicide, the comb supplied by the manufacturer was used to remove nits. Seven d

Respiratory system: Highly exposed yet under-reported organ in pyrethrin and pyrethroid toxicity.

Pyrethrin and pyrethroid are a relatively new class of pesticides with potent insecticidal properties. Pyrethrins are naturally occurring pesticides obtained from the Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium flower, while pyrethroids are their synthetic derivatives. They are widely used as the insecticides of choice in agriculture, veterinary medicine, public health programs, and household activities. Pyrethrin, being a broad-spectrum insecticide kills a wide range of pests, while pyrethroids last longer in the environment owing to low susceptibility to sunlight, and greater stability and efficacy than

Spinosad and Mixtures of an Entomopathogenic Fungus and Pyrethrins for Control of Sitona lineatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Field Peas.

The pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus L., is an important pest of field peas and faba beans in most temperate regions. As no information is currently available on efficacy of biopesticides for S. lineatus control, laboratory bioassays were performed to evaluate the impact of biopesticides (spinosad, Beauveria bassiana strain GHA, pyrethrins, B. bassiana GHA + pyrethrins, and B. bassiana GHA + azadirachtin) against adults of this pest. The concentrations used in this bioassay were 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 times the lowest labeled application rate of each product. Results were further verified in c

Synergized pyrethrin mousse, a new approach to head lice eradication: efficacy in field and laboratory studies.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pediculicidal and ovicidal efficacy of a new, single-application formulation of synergized natural pyrethrins (presented in an aerosol mousse form) compared with an established, effective formulation based on permethrin (in a creme rinse form). The trial was a single-blind, comparative, randomized, parallel-group study. Children between the ages 7 and 15 years and adults with active head lice infections, identified by the presence of live lice, were enrolled from a school and a children's home in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Prevalence of infection ranged fr

Co-Toxicity Factor Analysis Reveals Numerous Plant Essential Oils Are Synergists of Natural Pyrethrins against Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes.

With insecticide-resistant mosquito populations becoming an ever-growing concern, new vector control technologies are needed. With the lack of new chemical classes of insecticides to control mosquito populations, the development of novel synergists may improve the performance of available insecticides. We screened a set of 20 plant essential oils alone and in combination with natural pyrethrins against Aedes aegypti (Orlando) female adult mosquitoes to assess their ability to synergize this natural insecticide. A co-toxicity factor analysis was used to identify whether plant oils modulated the

Assessing the oral toxicity of acetamiprid, spinosad, cypermethrin, and pyrethrins in the invasive hornet Vespa velutina nigrithorax.

The yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina subs. nigrithorax Buysson, 1905, is an invasive species in Europe, posing substantial ecological and economic threats. Its biology and behavior, marked by rapid reproduction and aggressive predation, endanger native insects. This has negative impacts on agriculture, biodiversity, and human safety. Effective control is therefore essential to prevent and minimize its spread and ecological impact. This study assessed the acute oral toxicity of four commercial insecticide formulations containing acetamiprid, spinosad, cypermethrin, and a mixture of natural

Pyrethrin II impairs mitochondrial potential through ROS and MAPK pathways in HT‑22 cells.

OBJECTIVE: Pyrethrin II, a key active monomer of natural pyrethrins, is widely used in household insecticides. This study investigated whether Pyrethrin II induces hippocampal neuronal injury through ROS overproduction and MAPK pathway dysregulation. METHODS: HT-22 cells were treated with Pyrethrin II at concentrations of 10 and 40 μg/mL for 24 h. Subsequently, cell viability was evaluated using the CCK-8 assay, transcriptomic sequencing was performed to identify global transcriptional changes, intracellular ROS levels were measured by flow cytometry, MAPK pathway protein expression was analy

Comparative study of the clinical effectiveness of a pyrethrin-based pediculicide with combing versus a permethrin-based pediculicide with combing.

In a randomized, evaluator-blinded clinical trial, 190 patients were treated for Pediculus humanus capitis infestations with a pyrethrin-piperonyl-butoxide pediculicide (RID; Py-PB) and a permethrin pediculicide (NIX; PM). A total of 160 patients were evaluable for nit-combing speed, 156 patients were evaluable for efficacy at day 7, and 150 patients were evaluable for efficacy at day 14. Both Py-PB and PM showed 100% efficacy at day 7. At day 14, one patient in the PM group had an apparent reinfestation. The Py-PB group had significantly lower mean combing times (P=0.04), but because the PM g

Synthesis and Structure-Activity Relationship of Phosphonate Esters with (S)‑Cinerolone and (S)‑Jasmololone as Irreversible Inhibitors of the GDSL Esterase/Lipase TcGLIP to Study Pyrethrin Biosynthesis.

TcGLIP, a GDSL esterase/lipase family enzyme found widely across species, synthesizes natural insecticides pyrethrins with (1R,3R)-chrysanthemoyl CoA and (S)-rethrolones as substrates in the Dalmatian Daisy Tanacetum cinerariifolium. We previously reported that alkyl- or benzyl-substituted phosphonate esters with (S)-pyrethrolone blocked TcGLIP at nanomolar ranges, but the mechanism of enzyme-substrate interactions remains elusive. Notably, it is unclear whether the conjugated diene of (S)-pyrethrolonyl moiety is essential for TcGLIP inhibition and whether such probes are effective in blocking

Efficacy and tolerability of natural synergised pyrethrins in a new thermo labile foam formulation in topical treatment of scabies: a prospective, randomised, investigator-blinded, comparative trial vs. permethrin cream.

We compared in a prospective, randomised, investigator-blinded trial, the efficacy and tolerability of a new synergised-pyrethrins thermo-labile foam (F) formulation with permethrin 5 % cream (P) in 40 patients with scabies. Clinical evolution of scabetic lesions (Clinical grading = CG) and itching intensity (IS) were assessed, using a 5-point semi-quantitative score, at baseline, at week 2 and 4. F and P were equally effective in the clinical resolution of scabetic lesions. As compared to baseline, P reduced CG and IS from 3.4 0.7 and 3.1 0.4 to 0.2 0.6 and 1.4 1, at week 2, and to 0.0 0.0 an
