Resistance to iron deficiency is mediated through rhizosphere acidification and ferric chelate reductase activity in Pyrus betulaefolia.

Iron (Fe) deficiency stress seriously impacts the yield and quality of pear fruit. Nevertheless, the mechanism of Fe absorption in pears (Pyrus betulaefolia) remains unclear. ARFs are a class of transcription factors that are widely involved in plant stress response. However, their function in iron absorption in pears remains unknown. In this study, we identified an auxin response factor in P. betulaefolia (PbeARF2) which was significantly induced by Fe deficiency stress. The Fe absorption capacities of PbeARF2 overexpressed Arabidopsis and P. betulaefolia seedlings were significantly enhanced

PbXND1 Results in a Xylem-Deficient Dwarf Phenotype through Interaction with PbTCP4 in Pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.).

Dwarfing is an important agronomic characteristic in fruit breeding. However, due to the lack of dwarf cultivars and dwarf stocks, the dwarfing mechanism is poorly understood in pears. In this research, we discovered that the dwarf hybrid seedlings of pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.), 'Red Zaosu,' exhibited a xylem-deficient dwarf phenotype. The expression level of PbXND1, a suppressor of xylem development, was markedly enhanced in dwarf hybrid seedlings and its overexpression in pear results in a xylem-deficient dwarf phenotype. To further dissect the mechanism of PbXND1, PbTCP4 was isolated

Immunostimulatory Activity of a Mixture of Platycodon grandiflorum, Pyrus serotine, Chaenomeles sinensis, and Raphanus sativus in RAW264.7 Macrophages.

In this study, a mixture of Platycodon grandiflorum, Pyrus serotina, Chaenomeles sinensis, and Raphanus sativus (PPCRE) was investigated for their immuno-enhancing effects, as well as the molecular mechanism of PPCRE in RAW264.7 cells. PPCRE dramatically increased nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) generation depending on the concentration while exhibiting no cytotoxicity. PPCRE markedly upregulated the mRNA and protein expression of immune-related cytotoxic factors such as cyclooxygenase (COX)-1, COX-2, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and pro-inflammatory cytokines such

Chemical constituents and anti-ulcer effects of a wild pear (Pyrus syriaca Boiss.): Phytochemical, histopathological and apoptotic approaches.

Gastric ulcers are a major health concern that can cause severe complications such as bleeding (perforation), digestive blockage, or even stomach cancer if not treated properly. In this study, we evaluated the phytoconstituents, acute toxicity, and gastroprotective potential of the unexplored Pyrus syriaca Boiss. in ethanol-mediated gastric ulcer in rats. Experimental rats were housed in different cages and fasted before receiving pretreatments (250 and 500 mg/kg) and absolute ethanol (5 mL/kg, i.g.) administration. Phytochemical investigations unveiled increased phenolic (142.55 GAE/100 g), f

Secondary metabolites of the invasive tree, Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana), provide support for the empty niche theory of invasion.

Invasive woody species like Callery pear (Pyrus calleryana Decne.) alter ecosystems directly and indirectly through effects on arthropod communities as well as chemical alterations of the soil. Evidence suggests that the aggressive spread and negative impacts are due to allelopathic chemicals present throughout plant tissues which reduce herbivory and add unique allochthonous inputs to the soil, thereby reducing germination of native species and furthering Callery pear's domination on the landscape. To assess the allelopathic potential of Callery pear, we collected leaf tissue from Callery pea

Candidate Metabolomic Biomarkers of the Geographical-Indication Pear Gaoping Dahuangli (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.): An Exploratory Widely Targeted Metabolomics Study.

Gaoping Dahuangli is a landrace pear grown for more than four centuries in Gaoping County, Shanxi Province, and a National Geographical Indication (GI) product since 2013. What distinguishes it chemically from other pears-and how that distinction can be proved in the marketplace-has not been established. We profiled the fruit metabolome of Dahuangli and four commercial reference cultivars (Korla xiangli, Jingbaili, Clapp's Favorite, and Akizuki) by widely targeted UHPLC-MS/MS metabolomics (five varieties × three biological replicates, single harvest season) and measured eight quality attribute

Retention and stability of phenolic compounds in pear (Pyrus communis L.) juices made by novel spiral filter press technology.

The retention of phenolic compounds during pear juice production using an innovative spiral filter press and a conventional decanter at pilot scale (150 kg, cv. Schweizer Wasserbirne) was comparatively analyzed. 25 compounds were tentatively assigned by RP-UHPLC-DAD-ESI(-)-QTOF-HR-MS/MS analyses. Caffeoylquinic acid dehydrodimers, detected in pear juices for the first time, may serve as markers of conventionally produced juices. Total phenolic compounds in spiral filter-pressed juices nearly doubled those obtained by decanter (256.2 vs. 136.5 mg/L). This was attributed to the higher retention

CNGC Gene Family in Pyrus betulaefolia: Genome-Wide Analysis and CNGC4/14 Function in Salt Tolerance via DNA Methylation.

Salt stress severely restricts the growth and development of pear trees, and DNA methylation may potentially modulate the salt tolerance of Pyrus betulaefolia by regulating ion transporter genes. Cyclic nucleotide-gated channel (CNGC) family genes are essential for plant ion transport and salt stress adaptation; however, the epigenetic regulatory relationship between DNA methylation and CNGC genes underlying pear salt tolerance remains unclear. In this study, 26 PbCNGC genes were systematically identified from P. betulaefolia, which possess the conserved motifs characteristic of the CNGC famil

Packham's Triumph Pears (Pyrus communis L.) Post-Harvest Treatment during Cold Storage Based on Chitosan and Rue Essential Oil.

Pears (Pyrus communis L.) cv. Packham's Triumph are very traditional for human consumption, but pear is a highly perishable climacteric fruit with a short shelf-life affected by several diseases with a microbial origin. In this study, a protective effect on the quality properties of pears was evidenced after the surface application of chitosan-Ruta graveolens essential oil coatings (CS + RGEO) in four different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 %, v/v) during 21 days of storage under 18 °C. After 21 days of treatment, a weight loss reduction of 10% (from 40.2 ± 5.3 to 20.3 ± 3.9) compared to

Genome-Wide Analysis Characterization and Evolution of SBP Genes in Fragaria vesca, Pyrus bretschneideri, Prunus persica and Prunus mume.

The SQUAMOSA promoter binding protein (SBP)-box proteins are plant-specific transcriptional factors in plants. SBP TFs are known to play important functions in a diverse development process and also related in the process of evolutionary novelties. SBP gene family has been characterized in several plant species, but little is known about molecular evolution, functional divergence and comprehensive study of SBP gene family in Rosacea. We carried out genome-wide investigations and identified 14, 32, 17, and 17 SBP genes from four Rosacea species (Fragaria vesca, Pyrus bretschneideri, Prunus pers

Comprehensive Analysis of Boron-Induced Changes in Cell Expansion and Phytohormone During Early Ovary Development in Pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis Yu).

Boron exerts regulatory control over various aspects of plant growth and morphogenesis, and the application of boron prior to anthesis has been recognized as a critical agronomic practice. However, the regulatory mechanisms by which boron influences fruit set and early ovary development in pear remain to be elucidated. In this study, boron application was used at three stages, including pre-flowering, full-flowering, and early fruiting in the 'Kuerle Xiangli' (Pyrus sinkiangensis Yu), with a focus on cell expansion and endogenous phytohormone. As a result, treatment with 0.3% boric acid signif

Methyl salicylate delays peel yellowing of 'Zaosu' pear (Pyrus bretschneideri) during storage by regulating chlorophyll metabolism and maintaining chloroplast ultrastructure.

BACKGROUND: In some cultivars, yellowing resulting from chlorophyll breakdown has a direct and negative effect on food supply and health. The 'Zaosu' pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.), a commercial Asian pear cultivar in China, rapidly turns yellow when stored at room temperature after harvest. To develop techniques that delay or suppress chlorophyll degradation, the effects of methyl salicylate (MeSA) on yellowing in 'Zaosu' pear fruit during storage were evaluated. RESULTS: Compared with the untreated fruit, the application of 0.05 mmol L-1 MeSA delayed the decline of the total chlorophyll,

Effects of Green Manure Application on Postharvest Quality and Soil-to-Fruit Fertility Coupling in Korla Fragrant Pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis Yu).

Postharvest quality deterioration of Korla fragrant pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis Yu) severely constrains its market value, yet the regulatory role of preharvest soil management in shaping postharvest performance remains poorly understood. Although green manure is widely adopted to ameliorate orchard soil degradation, species-specific modulation of postharvest storage trajectories and the quantitative fidelity of soil-to-fruit nutrient transmission have rarely been resolved for climacteric pear species. This study investigated how green manure species modulate fruit quality at harvest and during p

Extracts of the leaves of Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim. Alleviate itch sensation via TSLP-dependent manner in mouse models of atopic dermatitis.

Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim. commonly known as "Sandolbae" in Korean is a pear tree widely distributed across East Asia. Recent studies indicate that P. ussuriensis Maxim. leaves (PUL) have antipruritic effects. This study aimed to determine the effects of PUL extract and its fractions in decreasing the itch sensation and skin lesions in two distinct animal models of atopic dermatitis (AD) induced by dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) or house dust mite (HDM). Our results showed that the total ethanol extract of PUL decreased the scratching behavior in mice with DNFB- and HDM-induced AD. Moreover, the et

Phenotypic, physiological and transcriptomic analysis of graded salt stress responses in Pyrus betulifolia Bunge and functional characterization of the hub gene PbSTY46.

Pyrus betulifolia Bunge is a salt‑tolerant rootstock for pear, but its salt‑tolerance mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, P. betulifolia seedlings were subjected to graded NaCl stress at concentrations of 0 (CK), 50 (T1), 100 (T2), and 200 (T3) mM. We integrated phenotypic observation, physiological assessment, transcriptomic profiling, and functional gene validation to systematically elucidate its salt tolerance mechanisms. Salt stress inhibited seedling growth and root traits in a concentration-dependent manner, and T3 caused the most severe damage. Osmotic solutes responded di

Evaluation of Ultra-High-Pressure Sterilization in Terms of Bactericidal Effect, Qualities, and Shelf Life of 'Xinli No. 7' (Pyrus sinkiangensis) Pear Juice.

In this study, ultra-high-pressure sterilization (UHPS) of Xinli No. 7 juice (XL7) was explored and optimized. A challenge to implement UHPS in juice as a full alternative to thermal treatment could be represented by the adoption of a pressure level of up to 500 MPa for 20 min at one cycle followed by the packaging in aseptic conditions. It was found that UHPS and HS treatments could effectively kill the microorganisms in XL7 juice but HS treatment would inevitably lose the nutritional quality in the juice, while UHPS treatment could better maintain the glyconic acid content, functional compon
