SUMMARYHuman vascular pythiosis is a rare, life-threatening angioinvasive infection caused predominantly by the oomycete Pythium insidiosum. Unlike ocular or cutaneous pythiosis, the vascular form is defined by arterial wall invasion, long-segment thrombosis, limb ischemia, aneurysmal complications, and high risks of amputation and death. Although P. insidiosum is broadly distributed in freshwater environments, reported human vascular disease remains concentrated in Thailand, indicating that exposure alone is insufficient for disease development. Available evidence supports a multifactorial mo

BACKGROUND: Pythiosis in sheep is an important disease in Brazil, which could cause rhinitis, dermatitis and alimentary tract inflammation. It is caused by the aquatic oomycete, Pythium insidiosum. The rhinofacial pythiosis causes facial deformity and upper respiratory tract clinical signs associated with necroproliferative masses occupying the rostral nasal cavity and hard palate. Little is known regarding the therapy, prophylaxis and pathogenesis of this disease.
METHODOLOGY: During the 6-year study, we examined 13 sheep presenting rhinofacial pythiosis. The diagnosis was performed through

INTRODUCTION: Pythiosis is caused by Pythium insidiosum, a fungus-like organism in the class Oomycetes. It can infect humans and a variety of animal species in tropical, subtropical and some temperate regions. Cases of animal pythiosis have occurred predominantly in horses in the skin and subcutaneous tissue at the limbs and in the ventral portion of thoracoabdominal wall - lesions in the nasal region are rarely reported. Moreover, although many human pythiosis cases have been reported in Thailand, no cases of animal pythiosis in Thailand have been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a cas

OBJECTIVE: Pythiosis, a life-threatening infectious disease, has been reported from Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai hospital since 2001. Delayed diagnosis, due to difficulty in obtaining an appropriate specimen and in timely identification, causes delayed treatment resulting in a high mortality rate. To address this problem, a previously developed immunoblot has been evaluated and objected as an effective diagnostic tool for human pythiosis in this hospital.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The immunoblot assay was evaluated using human sera with culturally proven fungal infection. Sera from humans with a vari

Pythiosis is an infection caused by the aquatic oomycete Pythium insidiosum. Commonly known as 'swamp cancer' in veterinary pathology, pythiosis is now considered an emerging human disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality. However, because clinical information is limited, many healthcare providers, including dermatologists, are unfamiliar with this diagnosis. To increase awareness of this life-threatening infection, a case of cutaneous pythiosis is presented. We describe a middle-aged man with acute myeloid leukaemia who presented with necrotizing haemorrhagic plaques on his

A 5 yr old, male, neutered mixed-breed dog was referred for persistent vomiting 2 wk following a pyloric biopsy for a pyloric outflow obstruction. Histopathology at the time of initial surgery was suggestive of pythiosis. Following referral, the dog underwent radical surgical treatment with a Billroth II procedure, partial pancreatectomy, and cholecystoduodenostomy. Histopathology and serology confirmed the diagnosis of pythiosis and medical treatment consisting of itraconazole and terbinafine was started postoperatively. Serology titers were checked again at 8, 12, and 24 wk postoperatively r

This review article explores the effectiveness of antibacterial drugs that inhibit protein synthesis in treating pythiosis, a difficult-to-treat infection caused by Pythium insidiosum. The article highlights the susceptibility of P. insidiosum to antibacterial drugs, such as macrolides, oxazolidinones, and tetracyclines. We examine various studies, including in vitro tests, experimental infection models, and clinical case reports. Based on our synthesis of these findings, we highlight the potential of these drugs in managing pythiosis, primarily when combined with surgical interventions. The r

We report 7 recognized autochthonous cases of canine pythiosis, a fungal disease, identified in Italy during 2021-2024. All infected dogs had freshwater exposure. Cases involved multiple lakes and occurred over consecutive years. Sequenced isolates clustered within clade IV of the Pythium insidiosum complex, currently designated Pythium periculosum.

A 12-month-old dog was diagnosed with cutaneous pythiosis after presenting with a nonhealing metatarsal wound, an inguinal mass, and regional lymphadenopathy. Both cytology of the abnormal lymph nodes and histopathology of the inguinal mass showed granulomatous inflammation. ELISA serology was positive for Pythium insidiosum. The dog developed hypercalcemia secondary to excessive vitamin D production. This conclusion was based on the combination of hyperphosphatemia, suppressed parathyroid hormone, suppressed 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, and a calcitriol level at the high end of the reference in

A 2-year-old female spayed Boxer dog was presented for a 1-month history of progressive hemorrhagic diarrhea with tenesmus and weight loss despite trial courses of antibiotics and diet change. Abdominal ultrasound revealed severe, focal thickening, and loss of normal architecture of the colonic wall with abdominal lymphadenomegaly. Dry-mount fecal cytology, performed on several consecutive days, consistently revealed numerous, round, 16-20 μm structures with basophilic, granular content, and a thin cell wall. Transmission electron microscopy identified these structures as fungi. Culture, polym

We evaluated the efficacy of azithromycin (50 mg/kg, every 12 h [q12h] orally) and miltefosine (25 mg/kg, q24h orally) treatments in an experimental model of vascular/disseminated pythiosis in immunosuppressed mice. Azithromycin was the only treatment able to reduce mortality. The histopathological findings showed acute vascular inflammation, pathogen dissemination, necrotizing myositis, neuritis, and arteritis. The results suggest that azithromycin, but not miltefosine, may have clinical relevance in the treatment of vascular/disseminated pythiosis.

Pythium insidiosum is an aquatic oomycete that causes granulomatous infection in dogs, most commonly cutaneous and gastrointestinal. Ultrasonographic characteristics of gastrointestinal pythiosis have been described; occasionally, CT is utilized in the clinical setting, and CT features of pythiosis have not been published. The purpose of this retrospective, multicenter, descriptive study is to describe CT characteristics of noncutaneous canine pythiosis. The following CT parameters were recorded: lesion anatomic location, number, shape, margination, size, attenuation pre- and postcontrast, enh

Pythiosis is a disease caused by Pythium insidiosum, a fungus-like organism. P. insidiosum is pathogenic in mammals, particularly in horses, dogs, and humans. Human pythiosis can be classified into 4 types: (1) cutaneous/subcutaneous, (2) ocular, (3) vascular, and (4) disseminated pythiosis. Vascular pythiosis is a rare disease but a serious limb- and life-threatening infection. We reviewed 22 cases over a 10-year period in Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai/Chiang Mai University Hospital. The survival rate was around 63.6% during our follow-up period. The only effective treatment was complete excision

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 1.5-year-old mixed-breed dog was examined because of a 1-month history of anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The dog was very thin on physical examination (body condition score, 3/9). Results of all diagnostic tests were within reference limits except intestinal thickening and lymphadenopathy were identified on abdominal ultrasound examination. During exploratory laparotomy, thickening at the ileocecal-colic junction and within the transverse colon and mesenteric lymphadenopathy were identified, and the ileocecal-colic junction was resected.

BACKGROUND: Pythiosis, caused by Pythium insidiosum, is a chronic granulomatous disease of horses characterized by invasive, ulcerative, and pyogranulomatous cutaneous lesions. Involvement of the external genitalia is uncommon and remains poorly characterized, particularly regarding environmental exposure and treatment outcomes. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological pattern, clinicopathological features, diagnostic findings, and surgical outcomes of penile and preputial genital pythiosis in a hospital-presented horse cohort.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 123 horse

Gastrointestinal pythiosis is a severe, progressive and often a fatal disease, which is caused by the aquatic pathogen Pythium insidiosum. Treatment is challenging due to the disease's resistance to antifungal drugs. Surgical resection is frequently attempted in cases of pythiosis; however, it can be technically challenging. This report presents two dogs with decreased appetite, abdominal pain, progressive haematochezia, tenesmus and significant weight loss. With the medical histories of both being young canines, living in areas with access to natural water resources and with the main chronic

Pythium insidiosum is an oomycete, a fungal like microorganism, which infects mammals, causing pythiosis in animals and humans, especially in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. The treatment for this infection is very difficult, and therapeutic options commonly comprise surgery, immunotherapy and antimicrobial drugs. The present report describes the clinical healing of a dog with gastrointestinal pythiosis by treatment with a combination of antifungals and immunotherapy, as well as reviews the cases reported in the literature that used some type of therapy for canine pythiosis.

Pythiosis, a rare and formidable infectious disease caused by Pythium insidiosum, is characterized by profound uncertainties in achieving definitive diagnoses, suboptimal outcomes, and an exceptionally high mortality rate. Here, we present a rare case of human spinal pythiosis in southern China. With advanced metagenomic sequencing technology, Pythium insidiosum was pinpointed as the causative pathogen. We discovered that the inoculation of either tissue fragments or homogenate yielded more successful results and enabled a moderate extension of the culture duration to 5-10 days through an exha
