Molecular basis of thalassemia in Qatar.

There is a paucity of information on the molecular basis of beta-thalassemia (thal) in Qatar, a country in the southern part of the Arabian Gulf. To decipher the molecular spectrum of beta- thalassemic alleles present in Qatar, we studied 31 clinically recognized patients, including three with sickle cell disease and beta-thal, and an additional six cases referred for unexplained microcytic anemia. We found 12 different beta-thalassemic alleles and two yet to be defined alleles, mutations likely occurring elsewhere than in the beta-globin gene per se. This is quite striking, given the small si

First molecular analysis of rabies virus in Qatar and clinical cases imported into Qatar, a case report.

Identifying the origin of the rabies virus (RABV) infection may have significant implications for control measures. Here, we identified the source of a RABV infection of two Nepalese migrants in Qatar by comparing their RABV genomes with RABV genomes isolated from the brains of a RABV infected camel and fox from Qatar.

Cerebral schistosomiasis: Case series from Qatar.

Schistosomiasis is the third most widespread devastating parasitic disease worldwide and has a high mortality burden. Neuroschistosomiasis is one of the rare and most severe clinical presentations of the disease. It is caused by granuloma formation around eggs that lodge in the central nervous system, with Schistosoma japonicum usually causing most reported cerebral disease. Three unusual presentations of schistosomiasis in Qatar are described herein. The three patients were young males who presented with seizures and tumor-like lesions on brain imaging. The diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy,

Survey of major blinding conditions in Qatar.

Qatar is one of the rapidly developing Gulf States. Its life style is rapidly changing from a seminomadic to a more settled urban one. This is the first study of the causes of economic blindness (6/60) in Qatar. It embraces 3,072 patients (70% males and 30% females). The most common causes in those under 40 years of age were trachoma, infectious diseases, retinal diseases, trauma and congenital malformations. After 40 years, cataract and glucoma occupy the second and third commonest causes after trachoma. Thus, a proper antitrachoma campaign will cut down the incidence of blidness by 50%. Cont
