Quantum dots (QDs) originating from two-dimensional (2D) sheets of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), graphene, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), monoatomic buckled crystals (phosphorene), germanene, silicene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are emerging zero-dimensional materials. These QDs possess diverse optical properties, are chemically stable, have surprisingly excellent biocompatibility and are relatively amenable to surface modifications. It is therefore not difficult to see that these QDs have potential in a variety of bioapplications, including biosensing, bioimaging and an

An extracellular biosynthesis method has been developed to prepare cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) with strong fluorescence emission by incubating cheap Cd and Se inorganic salts with Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the biosynthesised CdSe QDs have an average size of 3.1 nm, the excellent optical properties with fluorescence emission around 494 nm, and the good crystallinity. It was found that addition of 80 mg of mercaptosuccinic acid

Band gap tunable cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized within earthworms that emit in the middle of the visible spectrum. We demonstrated that this luminescence emission is a combination of the earthworm's protein and QD luminescence, such that the contribution of QDs in the luminescence was negligible. Eisenia fetida earthworms were used for QD biosynthesis and were exposed to different concentrations of CdCl2 and Na2 SeO3 in standard soil for an adequate exposure time. The size of the CdSe QDs based on the effective mass model was in agreement with the size measured fro

Water-soluble CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and their conjugates with antibodies and antigenes were prepared by optimized procedures for applications in CE immunoassays. The QD size of 3.5 nm, excitation spectrum in the range of 300-500 nm, the maximum wavelength of the emission spectrum at 610 nm, quantum yield of 0.25 and luminescence lifetimes in the range of 3.6-43 ns were determined. The 0.1 M solution of TRIS/TAPS (pH 8.3) was found to be the optimum buffer for the separation of the antiovalbumin-ovalbumin immunocomplex from the free conjugates of QDs.

Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) are increasingly being considered for medical applications. The objective of this article is to determine which anti-diabetic drugs and compounds have been enhanced by CNPs, and which CNP scaffolds were found to be successful. The anti-diabetic drugs administered loaded on CNPs include insulin, metformin, glimepiride and vanadium compounds. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), graphene quantum dots (GQDs), graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs), hybrid systems and fullerenes are all carriers able to alleviate symptoms of diabetes. Successful CNPs are 10 nm or less and can have

QDs are semiconductor nanocrystalline materials with distinct optical and electronic characteristics due to their microscopic size and quantum mechanical properties. They are often composed of materials such as cadmium selenide (CdSe), cadmium telluride (CdTe), or indium phosphide (InP) and are typically in the size range of 2 to 10 nanometers in diameter. These tiny particles are used in various scientific and technological applications. Some key characteristics and applications of quantum dots are size-dependent Optical Properties with tunable emission. The color of light emitted by quantum

Quantum dots (QDs) are a type of nanoparticle with excellent optical properties, suitable for many optical-based biomedical applications. However, the potential of quantum dots to be used in clinical settings is limited by their toxicity. As such, much effort has been invested to examine the mechanism of QDs' toxicity. Yet, the current literature mainly focuses on ROS- and apoptosis-mediated cell death induced by QDs, which overlooks other aspects of QDs' toxicity. Thus, our study aimed to provide another way by which QDs negatively impact cellular processes by investigating the possibility of

The increasing use of nanoparticles in consumer products raises the concerns of their safety. This study investigated the biological effects of quantum dots (QD) exposure to rats during pregnancy. CdTe QD were injected on the 13th gestation day. Morphological features of 121 fetuses and histological analysis of placentas were performed on the 20th gestation day. The results showed that QD exhibit dose dependent embryotoxicity: survival rates of fetuses were 97% (5mg/kg dose), 86% (10mg/kg dose) and 43% (20mg/kg dose). QD exposure also resulted in the reduction of fetal body length and mass, di

The two-photon photochemistry of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) has been systematically studied. We find that upon intense irradiation CdSe quantum dots that absorb two or more visible photons undergo photodarkening. The quantum yield for this process is on the order of 6% in chloroform and much smaller in nonpolar solvents, such as octane. An analysis of the energetics indicates that, following two-photon excitation, the biexciton undergoes an Auger process producing a hot hole. This hot hole is ejected to a surface-bound TOP ligand, forming a QD(-)/TOP(+) contact ion pair that separates in chlorofo

A one-step method to produce ≈12 nm hydrodynamic diameter water-soluble CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), as well as CdS/ZnS, ZnSe/ZnMnS/ZnS, AgInS2 /ZnS, and CuInS2 /ZnS QDs, by ligand exchange with a near-monolayer of organosilane caps is reported. The method cross-links the surface-bound silane ligands such that the samples are stable on the order of months under ambient conditions. Furthermore, the samples may retain a high quantum yield (60%) over this time. Several methods to functionalize aqueous QD dispersions with proteins and fluorescent dyes have been developed with reaction yields as hi

Porphyrins may be used as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy, photocatalysts for organic pollutant dissociation, agents for medical imaging and diagnostics, applications in luminescence and electronics. The detection of porphyrins is significantly important and here the interaction of protoporphyrin-IX (PPIX) with CdTe quantum dots was studied. It was observed that the luminescence of CdTe quantum dots was quenched dramatically in the presence of PPIX. When CdTe quantum dots were embedded into silica layers, almost no quenching by PPIX was observed. This indicates that PPIX may interact

The unique photophysical properties of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have made them ideal for use as spectral labels and luminescent probes. In this review, applications are presented in which QDs function as active participants in nanoscale biosensor assemblies, where replacing traditional molecular fluorophores results in improved assay performance. Specific focus is on disease detection with applications including multiplexed target detection, mutation detection by coincidence analysis and QD-based FRET reporters for miRNA detection and DNA methylation analysis.

Newly prepared CdTe quantum dots ( QD) bearing shells of water solubility providing capping agents (i.e., thioglycolic acid ( TGA) and 2-(dimethylamino)ethanethiol hydrochloride (DMAET) were subjected to electrostatic assays with several proteins (i.e., cytochrome c (cyt c) and human serum albumin (HSA). In particular, we employed absorption, emission, transient absorption and time-resolved emission spectroscopic means to test their response to light. Only for negatively capped QDs spectroscopic and kinetic evidence were gathered that corroborate the successful bioconjugation of QDs with cyt c

Self-organized and strained CdSSe quantum dot (Q-dot) thin films have been grown on ITO-coated glass substrates by novel wet chemical route. The Q-dots are (002) oriented faceted pyramids with average particle size of 7.5 nm. The X-ray diffraction results reveal the formation of a solid solution of CdSSe. Atomic force microscopy is used to investigate the morphology of the nanocrystalline thin films. The energy dispersive X-ray analysis spectrum confirms the presence of Cd, S, and Se in the films. Optical absorption and photoluminescence spectra show the blue shift for quantum dot thin films.

We studied surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE) of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). These QDs are water-soluble ZnS-capped CdSe nanoparticles stabilized using lysine cross-linked mercaptoundecanoic acid. The QDs were spin-coated from 0.75% PVA solution on a glass slide covered with 50 nm of silver and a 5-nm protective SiO(2) layer. Excited QDs induced surface plasmons in a thin silver layer. Surface plasmons emitted a hollow cone of radiation into an attached hemispherical glass prism at a narrow angle of 48.5 degrees. This directional radiation (SPCE) preserves the spectral properties of

Auger recombination is a major limitation for the fluorescent emission of quantum dots (QDs). It is the main source of QDs fluorescence blinking at the single-particle level. At high-power excitation, when several charge carriers are formed inside a QD, Auger becomes more efficient and severely decreases the quantum yield (QY) of multiexcitons. This limits the efficiency and the use of colloidal QDs in applications where intense light output is required. Here, we present a new generation of thick-shell CdSe/CdS QDs with dimensions >40 nm and a composition gradient between the core and the shel

Twinkle, twinkle: The blinking of semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals is the main inconvenience of these bright nanoemitters. There are various approaches for obtaining non-blinking nanocrystals, one of which is to grow a thick coat of CdS on the CdSe core (see picture). Applications of this method in the fields of optoelectronic devices, biologic labelling and quantum information processing are discussed. The blinking of semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals is the main inconvenience of these bright nanoemitters. Semiconductor luminescent Quantum Dots (QDs) constitute a growing area of research for biological imaging and other biomedical applications. One of the main challenges is to provide QDs with a biocompatible and easy to functionalize surface while retaining the core optical properties. Gelatine is an excellent candidate for that purpose as it is a very common natural polymer, highly biocompatible and bearing various functional groups. Here we present a simple, one-pot method for manufacturing gelatinated QDs with chosen optical properties.

Quantum dot (QD) superlattices offer collective optoelectronic properties distinct from disordered solids1-4, but their integration into high-resolution display devices remains elusive because of difficulties in achieving spatially defined, structurally coherent thin films. Here we report a scalable strategy for fabricating pixelated perovskite QD (PeQD) superlattice thin-film arrays that feature in-plane long-range order, vertical confinement and precise spatial patterning. By engineering rhombic dodecahedral CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with robust surface termination by a ligand-fluoride co-stabili
