Green synthesis of carbon quantum dots toward highly sensitive detection of formaldehyde vapors using QCM sensor.

In the present study, an eco-friendly method for the preparation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) is demonstrated using hydrothermal treatment of laurel leaves. The optical and structural characteristics of the prepared CQDs are investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), fluorescent and UV-visible spectroscopies, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor designed and modified with CQDs is capable of detecting formaldehyde vapors in the presence of other interfering chemical-vapor analytes

Decoding the Membrane Interactions of Antimicrobial Peptoids via Quartz Crystal Microbalance Nano-Viscometry.

The rise in antimicrobial resistance underscores the urgent need for novel therapeutics. Membrane-disrupting agents offer a possible solution. Natural antimicrobial peptides are membrane-active but suffer from proteolytic instability and poor bioavailability. Sequence-defined peptoids have emerged as promising antimicrobial peptide mimetics, offering enhanced stability, tunable side-chain chemistry, and potent activity against drug-resistant pathogens. Here, we employed quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based viscoelastic fingerprinting, complemented by dye leakage assays, to characterize the

Formation of a Neuronal Membrane Model: A Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring Study.

Supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) that model neuronal membranes are needed to explore the role of membrane lipids in the misfolding and aggregation of amyloid proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. The neuronal membranes include not only phospholipids, but also significant amounts of cholesterol, sphingomyelin, and gangliosides, which are critical to its biological function. In this study, we explored the conditions for the formation of an SLB, for the five-component lipid mixture composed of zwitterionic 1,2-Dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phos

Mixed-Matrix Membrane-Based Piezoelectric CO2 Sensor with Self-Humidity Compensation.

Monitoring the CO2 concentration is crucial for assessing respiratory illnesses in humans and safeguarding the environment. The ongoing difficulty lies in achieving highly sensitive detection while also eliminating the interference caused by humidity. There is an unmet need for portable sensors with both high sensitivity and good moisture resistance to monitor CO2 in real time. In this study, a novel sensor capable of capturing the piezoelectric signals induced by CO2 gas is developed. A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) coated with a mixed- matrix membrane of metal-organic framework (MOF)/pol

Exploring tear viscosity with quartz crystal microbalance technology.

Tear viscosity is a critical property affecting tear distribution and ocular surface stability. While not widely established as a primary diagnostic marker, deviations from normal viscosity can impact ocular health, potentially contributing to conditions such as dry eye syndrome. Despite their importance, traditional viscometers require sample volumes that are not feasible to use with tear volume. This research introduces a novel Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM)-based method for tear viscosity measurement, offering a viscometer prototype that operates with minimal sample volumes. Human tear s

Real-Time Probing of Biofouling Kinetics on Orthokeratology Lenses: QCM-D Quantification of Protein/Lipid Adsorption and Multipurpose Solution-Mediated Elution under Physiological Flow.

Orthokeratology (OK) lenses for myopia correction are susceptible to biofouling by tear-derived biomolecules, escalating the risks of ocular infection and inflammation. Prevailing studies that rely on end point protein quantification fail to capture the real-time kinetics of fouling formation. Here, we fabricated a UV pressure-assisted polymer-grafted quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) sensor exhibiting exceptional stability, nanoscale smoothness (RMS roughness ≈2 nm), and interfacial peel resistance. This platform enables in situ tracking of adsorption/desorption

Unraveling Cholesterol-Dependent Interactions of Alkylphospholipids with Supported Lipid Bilayers.

Alkylphospholipids are single-chain lipid amphiphiles that possess clinically relevant biological activities driven by membrane-destabilizing interactions. Subtle variations in alkylphospholipid structure can lead to significant differences in their biological effects, yet corresponding membrane interactions remain underexplored. Herein, we employed the quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation (QCM-D) technique to characterize the real-time membrane interactions of three alkylphospholipids-edelfosine, miltefosine, and perifosine-on supported lipid bilayers with varying cholesterol fractions. Complementary Operando Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance and UV/Vis Spectroscopic Studies: Acetate Effects on Zinc-Manganese Batteries.

Zinc-ion batteries, in which zinc ions and protons do intercalation and de-intercalation during battery cycling with various proposed mechanisms under debate, have been studied. Recently, electrolytic zinc-manganese batteries, exhibiting the pure dissolution-deposition behavior with a large charge capacity, have been accomplished through using electrolytes with Lewis acid. However, the complicated chemical environment and mixed products hinder the investigation though it is crucial to understand the detailed mechanism. Here, cyclic voltammetry coupled electrochemical quartz crystal microbalanc

Investigation of Three-Dimensional Bacterial Adhesion Manner on Model Organic Surfaces Using Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Energy Dissipation Monitoring.

Bacterial biofilms reduce the performance and efficiency of biomedical and industrial devices. The initial step in forming bacterial biofilms is the weak and reversible attachment of the bacterial cells onto the surface. This is followed by bond maturation and secretion of polymeric substances, which initiate irreversible biofilm formation, resulting in stable biofilms. This implies that understanding the initial reversible stage of the adhesion process is crucial to prevent bacterial biofilm formation. In this study, we analyzed the adhesion processes of E. coli on self-assembled monolayers (

Acoustic Wave Sensors for Detection of Blister Chemical Warfare Agents and Their Simulants.

On-site detection and initial identification of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) remain difficult despite the many available devices designed for this type of analysis. Devices using well-established analytical techniques such as ion mobility spectrometry, gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, or flame photometry, in addition to unquestionable advantages, also have some limitations (complexity, high unit cost, lack of selectivity). One of the emerging techniques of CWA detection is based on acoustic wave sensors, among which surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices and quartz crystal mic

Profiling the Serum Protein Corona of Fibrillar Human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide.

Amyloids may be regarded as native nanomaterials that form in the presence of complex protein mixtures. By drawing an analogy with the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles in biological fluids, we hypothesized that amyloids should form a protein corona in vivo that would imbue the underlying amyloid with a modified biological identity. To explore this hypothesis, we characterized the protein corona of human islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) fibrils in fetal bovine serum using two complementary methodologies developed herein: quartz crystal microbalance and "centrifugal capture", coupled

Control of the morphology of lipid layers by substrate surface chemistry.

In this study, surface coatings were used to control the morphology of the deposited lipid layers during vesicle spreading, i.e., to control if liposomes self-assemble on a surface into a supported lipid bilayer or a supported vesicular layer. The influence of the properties of the surface coating on formation of the deposited lipid layer was studied with quartz crystal microbalance and two-wavelength multiparametric surface plasmon resonance techniques. Control of lipid self-assembly on the surface was achieved by two different types of soft substrate materials, i.e., dextran and thiolated po

Composition-dependent disruption pathways of supported lipid bilayers by methyl-β-cyclodextrin: A multimodal AFM, nanomechanical, and QCM-D study.

We investigated the effects of methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD) on supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) using a combined approach of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) imaging, force-distance (F-D) measurements, and Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation (QCM-D). This multimodal approach allowed simultaneous assessment of mechanical and mass changes, revealing disruption pathways that depend strongly on membrane composition. AFM imaging showed time-dependent defect nucleation, with cholesterol-containing bilayers exhibiting the most extensive damage. Force-distance curves quantified across POPC, POPC/

Classification of binding property of amyloid β to lipid membranes: Membranomic research using quartz crystal microbalance combined with the immobilization of lipid planar membranes.

A biomembrane-related fibrillogenesis of Amyloid β from Alzheimer' disease (Aβ) is closely related to its accumulation behavior. A binding property of Aβ peptides from Alzheimer' disease to lipid membranes was then classified by a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) method combined with an immobilization technique using thiol self-assembled membrane. The accumulated amounts of Aβ, Δfmax, was determined from the measurement of the maximal frequency reduction using QCM. The plots of Δfmax to Aβ concentration gave the slope and saturated value of Δfmax, (Δfmax)sat that are the parameters for bindin

Unraveling the time course of interaction between DNA nanopores and lipid bilayers using QCM-D: role of cholesterol anchors and bilayer supporting substrates.

Lipid membranes are fundamental elements of cells, serving as barriers that protect the cell interior from the external environment. DNA nanostructures, which can engineer lipid membranes' signal transduction and substance exchange properties, attract interest for their potential applications in the biomedical field. The interaction between DNA nanostructures and lipid membranes is of scientific and technological interest. Here, we investigate the interaction between DNA nanopores (DNPs) and model supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) using real-time quartz crystal microbalance with energy dissipati

QCM-based screening of acrylate polymers for NPPA pre-concentration to enhance vapor detection of fentanyl.

The prevalence of fentanyl and its analogs in the illicit drug market has significantly contributed to the ongoing opioid crisis. Responding to these threats in uncontrolled field environments is particularly challenging for first responders and law enforcement due to the uncertainty surrounding the composition of encountered substances. A previously developed ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) method enabled non-contact detection of fentanyl via its vapor surrogate, N-phenylpropanamide (NPPA); however, the technique was limited by low analyte vapor availability caused by fentanyl's low volatilit

Electropolymerization of Phthalocyanine and Corrole Materials for Mass-Based Chemical Sensing and e-Nose Applications.

The need for the development of efficient sensing materials and processing methods without compromising device performance for organic sensors is one that is continuously growing. We herein report the fabrication of porphyrinoid polymer-coated piezoelectric quartz microbalance (QMB) sensors. Three materials, para- and ortho-bis(aminophenoxy)SiPc and 5,10,15-tris-(4-aminophenyl)copper corrole, were processed through two electropolymerization techniques, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, to create sensing films for potential mass-based and electronic nose (e-nose) applications. Surface modifications for the development of piezoimmunosensors.

Four different techniques for the immobilisation of proteins onto the gold electrode of a piezoelectric quartz crystal were investigated. The examined techniques were adsorption, avidin-biotin binding and two different types of covalent binding on self-assembled monolayers (SAM), dithiobis(succinimidylpropionate) (DSP) and a dextran modified thiol monolayer. The reaction of the immobilised proteins (bovine serum albumin (BSA) and anti-human IgG) with their specific antibodies, anti-BSA and hIgG (50 and 200 micrograms/ml) were studied using a quartz crystal microbalance and then compared. Evaluation of the Mechanical Properties of Zwitterionic Peptide Self-Assembled Monolayers and Their Interfacial Hydration via a Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring.

Biofouling severely limits the performance of biomedical devices, motivating the development of antifouling surface coatings inspired by natural hydration-based resistance mechanisms. Zwitterionic peptide self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are promising candidates, yet the molecular origins of their mechanical and hydration properties remain insufficiently understood. Here, we investigate the assembly, viscoelastic properties, and interfacial hydration of zwitterionic peptide SAMs on gold substrates using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D).
