Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are surface-active organic compounds common in industrial cleaner formulations widely used in various sanitation applications. While acting as effective pathogenic biocides, QACs lack selective toxicity and often have poor target specificity. As a result, adverse effects on biological processes and thus the performance of biological nutrient removal (BNR) systems may be encountered when QACs enter wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Because of these impacts, there is motivation to screen wastewater influents for QACs and for process engineers to consider t

An injection port pyrolysis method for the analysis of quaternary ammonium compounds is reported. Identification and confirmation of the analyte was accomplished by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. With minor modifications to pH used and solvent composition, a common ion-pair method of extraction of quaternary ammonium compounds from biological matrices with an iodide counter ion is described. Although the combined extraction-identification methodology was limited to neostigmine, succinylcholine, and paraquat, it should easily be applicable to any of the other compounds examined in this s

The widespread usage of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) as disinfectants during the COVID-19 pandemic poses significant environmental risks, such as toxicity to organisms and the emergence of superbugs. In this study, different inorganic salts (NaCl, KCl, CaCl2, MgCl2) were used to induce endophytes LSE01 isolated from hyperaccumulating plants. After five generations of cultivation under 80 g/L NaCl, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of LSE01 to QACs increased by about 3-fold, while its degradation extent increased from 8% to 84% for C12BDMA-Cl and 5%-89% for C14BDMA-Cl. The effects of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) with sodium hydroxide on swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV), an enterovirus were studied. Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) with 0.1% NaOH showed a stronger effect against SVDV than other QACs with 0.1% NaOH. The effect of DDAC with 0.1% NaOH was strong at 40 degrees C. DDAC was effective against SVDV at pH values around 11.0, but not in the distilled water control. The effect of DDAC with 0.1% NaOH was already observed at 1 min after mixing of the DDAC with SVDV. Observation under an electron microscopy revealed that the probable mec

The recent global pandemic has resulted in increased use of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). Currently, QACs are active ingredients in 292 disinfectants recommended by the US EPA for use against SARS-CoV-2. Among QACs, benzalkonium chloride (BAK), cetrimonium bromide (CTAB), cetrimonium chloride (CTAC), didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), cetrimide, quaternium-15, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and benzethonium chloride (BEC) were all identified as potential culprits of skin sensitivity. Given their widespread utilization, additional research is needed to better classify their derma

Didecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) is a fourth generation dialkyl-quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) that is used in numerous products for its antimicrobial properties. While many QACs have been associated with allergic disease, the toxicity and sensitization of DDAB have not been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the irritancy and sensitization potential of DDAB following dermal application in a murine model. DDAB induced significant irritancy (0.0625-2%), evaluated by ear swelling in female BALB/c mice. Initial evaluation of the sensitization potential

This study investigates salophen-UO2 complexes 1 and 2 assembled with four tetraalkylammonium chloride salts of various cation sizes: tetramethyl (TMA), dimethyl-dipropyl (DMDPA), dimethyl-dibutyl (DMDPA), and tetrabutylammonium (TBA). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) and computational analyses such as Hirshfeld surface and DFT analyses and interaction region indicator (IRI) representation provided a comprehensive view on how packing and the overall assembly of the complexes are affected by the size of the ammonium cation and on the interplay among different intermolecular forces resp

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a significant global health concern, contributing heavily to the morbidity and mortality associated with both hospital-acquired (nosocomial) and community-acquired infections. In this context, we investigated the antibacterial potential of quinoline-based quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) against Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains. Compound 20 was identified through a detail Structure-Activity-Relationship study and demonstrated strong antibacterial potential with an MIC of 0.125 μg/mL against S. aureus. This compoun

Tolerance of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes to sublethal concentrations of disinfectants has been frequently reported. Particularly, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) such as benzalkonium chloride (BC) are often used in disinfectants and also as antiseptics in food industry and hospitals. Recently, we described Tn6188, a novel transposon in L. monocytogenes harbouring the transporter QacH, a molecular mechanism leading to increased tolerance to BC. In this study, we investigated the presence of Tn6188 within the genus Listeria spp. Our screening indicates that the distributio

Periodontitis is driven by polymicrobial biofilms and remains difficult to treat using systemic antibiotics, which fail to achieve therapeutic concentrations within periodontal pockets. In this study, we report on the fabrication of electrospun poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers incorporating quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs)-specifically benzyltriethylammonium chloride (BTEAC) and benzyldimethyldodecylammonium chloride (BDMDAC) as localized antimicrobial platforms. Electrospinning parameters were optimized to achieve high drug loading and reproducible fiber morphologies. Incorporation of

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) have raised concerns due to their widespread use in disinfectants and unknown bioaccumulation behavior. However, conventional bioaccumulation assessments are costly, time-consuming, and low-throughput, limiting their utility for screening the growing array of emerging QACs. In this study, we developed a protein affinity ultrafiltration mass spectrometry (PA-UF-MS) strategy using human serum albumin (HSA) as a molecular bait to selectively isolate bioaccumulative QACs from disinfectants. We identified 12 traditional and emerging QACs, including several silan

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the potential of oral antiseptic agents to reduce viral transmission. Strategies that enhance and sustain antiviral activity in the oral cavity may further support control of respiratory viruses. In this study, we evaluated the virucidal activity of selected antiseptic agents against influenza A virus (IAV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), individually and in combination, under controlled in vitro conditions. Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), benzethonium chloride (BZT), thymol, and tannic acid were assessed using a quantitative

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a formidable opportunistic pathogen, is notorious for its ability to form biofilms and produce virulence factors that favor chronic infections, especially in cystic fibrosis patients. The misuse of disinfectants, combined with environmental leakage and biodegradation, has led to widespread exposure of microorganisms to sub-lethal concentrations of disinfectants, particularly quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). This study investigates the interaction between QACs, specifically ethylbenzalkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (EBAC), and the quorum sensing (QS) mechanisms gove
