OBJECTIVE: African American patients have been underrepresented in large-scale trials of carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Thus the role of CEA in the treatment of extracranial carotid artery occlusive disease in black patients remains unclear. We undertook this study to determine the effect of black race on early and late outcome of CEA.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of records for patients who underwent CEA from 1990 to 1999. Data on demographics, operative indications, hospital course, and long-term follow-up were obtained for each patient. Patients were stratified by race for

For decades data have been collected comparing health care in racial and ethnic groups. The use of such groups in health services research assumes that standard, reliable, and valid definitions of race and ethnicity exist and that these definitions are used consistently. In fact, race is a term often used, but ill defined. It can incorporate biological, social, and cultural characteristics of patients and can refer to both genetic and behavioral traits. Various investigators have reported differences between racial and ethnic groups in health status, disease manifestation and outcome, resource

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding has multiple benefits for both mother and infant. Previous studies have shown that Hispanic/Latina women have higher rates of breastfeeding and better health outcomes than non-Hispanic black (NHB) women of similar socioeconomic status. Our primary objective was to explore the association of race/ethnicity with breastfeeding rates and the impact of socioeconomic factors on initiation and continuation of breastfeeding.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a hypothesis-generating secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of perinatal mental health in a diverse sam

OBJECTIVES: Characterize radiographic worsening in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by race and sex over 4 years and evaluate the role of established risk factors in observed race/sex differences.
METHODS: Whites (WHs) (694 males and 929 females) and African-Americans (AAs) (92 males and 167 females) at risk for radiographic KOA were eligible. Cox shared frailty models were used to estimate race and sex group differences in radiographic worsening, defined by Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) and OARSI joint space narrowing (JSN). Mixed effect models for repeated measures were used to estimate race- and sex-sp

UNLABELLED: Analysis of sport performance can provide effects of environmental and other venue-specific factors in addition to estimates of within-athlete variability between competitions, which determines smallest worthwhile effects.
PURPOSE: To analyze elite long-track speed-skating events.
METHODS: Log-transformed performance times were analyzed with a mixed linear model that estimated percentage mean effects for altitude, barometric pressure, type of rink, and competition importance. In addition, coefficients of variation representing residual venue-related differences and within-athlete

INTRODUCTION: Older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) likely face higher dementia risk because of vascular injury and chronic inflammation, potentially intensified among racially minoritized groups and those in rural or deprived neighborhoods. We quantified this association and examined variation by race and ethnicity, urbanicity, and neighborhood deprivation.
METHODS: We identified 211,321 older adults with CKD stages 3 to 5 from the Medicare 5% sample (2010-2022) using International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 and/or ICD-10 codes. Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP)-code level urbanic

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The capacity of specialty memory clinics in the United States is very limited. If lower socioeconomic status or minoritized racial group is associated with reduced use of memory clinics, this could exacerbate health care disparities, especially if more effective treatments of Alzheimer disease become available. We aimed to understand how use of a memory clinic is associated with neighborhood-level measures of socioeconomic factors and the intersectionality of race.
METHODS: We conducted an observational cross-sectional study using electronic health record data to co

Disparities persist in pediatric sports medicine along the lines of race, ethnicity, insurance status, and other demographic factors. In the context of knee injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures, meniscus tears, and tibial spine fractures, these inequalities affect evaluation, treatment, and outcomes. The long-term effects can be far-reaching, including sports and physical activity participation, comorbid chronic disease, and socio-emotional health. Further research is needed to more concretely identify the etiology of these disparities so that effective, equitable care is

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of, and risk factors for, race-day jockey falls occurring in Thoroughbred flat and jumps (hurdle and steeplechase) racing.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
METHODS: Incidence rates for race-day jockey falls over 14 racing seasons in New Zealand (n=421,596 race-day starts) were calculated per 1000 rides. Univariable and multivariable analyses of jockey, horse and race level risk factors were conducted with Poisson regression in a generalized linear mixed model.
RESULTS: Most races (97%, n=407,948 race starts) were flat racing with 10 races/race-day,

Shoulder dystocia is a rare but severe birth trauma where the neonate's shoulders fail to deliver after delivery of the head. Failure to deliver the shoulders quickly can lead to severe, long-term injury to the infant, including nerve injury, skeletal fractures, and potentially death. This observational study examined shoulder dystocia risk factors by race and ethnicity using a sample of 19,236 pregnant women who presented for labor and delivery from July 1, 2010 until June 30, 2013 at five locations. Multivariate analyses were used to identify risk factors associated with shoulder dystocia oc

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine risk factors for pathological gambling of horse race participants.
METHODS: The participants, 508 horse race gamblers, completed the DSM-IV criteria of pathological gambling, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-K) and Symptom Checklist-47-Revision (SCL-47-R). Data were analyzed using t-test, χ²-test, Fisher's exact test, and logistic regression analyses. Behaviors related to horse racing, alcohol abuse, and mental health were analyzed between problem or pathological gamblers compared to recreational gamblers.
RESULTS: The prevale

Adolescence is a period of sexual experimentation. We examined psychosocial predictors of high-risk sexual behavior and condom use. The sample included 824 ninth-graders, most of whom are African American. We conducted separate analyses for whites and African Americans. Predictors included alcohol and substance use, delinquency, prosocial behaviors, and family and peer influences. We found that problem behaviors predicted high-risk sexual behavior, but the effects were stronger for white youth. We also found that friends' behaviors were more predictive than family influences, except for family

BACKGROUND: African Americans face a disproportionate incidence and prevalence of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) in the United States, but HS severity and outcomes across racial and ethnic groups have not been well-established while controlling for potentially confounding factors. In this retrospective cohort study, we investigated the associations of race and ethnicity with HS severity, emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, and surgeries for HS while controlling for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), tobacco use, and insurance type.
METHODS: We reviewed 1190 patients seen at the M

OBJECTIVE: Fetal malpresentation complicates approximately 3% to 4% of all term births. It requires special considerations for delivery and exposes the mother and neonate to obstetrical interventions and potential adverse outcomes, such as umbilical cord prolapse, head entrapment and birth trauma, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, cesarean delivery, and cesarean delivery-related complications. We set out to explore the maternal and fetal factors associated with noncephalic malpresentation at term, with specific interest on the impact of maternal race and ethnicity on fetal malpresentation.
