Eradicating Racism: An Endocrine Society Policy Perspective.

The Endocrine Society recognizes racism as a root cause of the health disparities that affect racial/ethnic minority communities in the United States and throughout the world. In this policy perspective, we review the sources and impact of racism on endocrine health disparities and propose interventions aimed at promoting an equitable, diverse, and just healthcare system. Racism in the healthcare system perpetuates health disparities through unequal access and quality of health services, inadequate representation of health professionals from racial/ethnic minority groups, and the propagation o

Racism and Cannabis-Related Problems Among Hispanic/Latine Adults: The Role of Negative Emotions in Responses to Experiencing Racism.

METHOD: We examined the role of negative emotions resulting from racism on cannabis-related problems among 520 (44.2% female) Hispanic/Latine adults aged 18-65 (M = 36.6, SD = 10.3) who endorsed past-month cannabis use. RESULTS: Consistent with minority stress-based models, frequency of experiencing racism was statistically significantly correlated with racism-related negative affect, coping-motivated cannabis use, cannabis-related problems, anxiety, and depression. When entered simultaneously, racism and racism-related negative affect (but not anxiety or depression generally) remained statis

The role of structural racism in shaping urologic outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Structural racism is increasingly recognized as a fundamental driver of racial and ethnic health disparities, yet it remains insufficiently addressed in research. This review examines persistent disparities in urologic outcomes across malignant and benign conditions and highlights the role of upstream inequities and policies that shape care. RECENT FINDINGS: The literature links structural racism to inequities across several domains, including screening policy and guideline implementation, referral patterns, subspecialty access, insurance design, and neighborhood-level fact

Dismantling and eradicating anti-Blackness and systemic racism.

Anti-Blackness and systemic racism are long-standing pressing social issues that have received increasing attention in the counseling psychology literature. However, the past few years have demonstrated what can only be described as an emboldening of anti-Blackness-the brutal individual and systemic threats of emotional and physical violence and loss of life that Black individuals and communities face on a daily basis-and a harsh reminder of the systemic racism that continues to threaten the well-being of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. In this introduction for the special section on D

The Traumatic Impact of Structural Racism on African Americans.

Many African Americans in the United States have been impacted by structural racism since slavery and continue to experience trauma because of health disparities, economic disadvantages, and segregation. This article will define race, racism, and structural racism, which has perpetuated trauma for African Americans. The authors present a theory called Post Traumatic Slavery Syndrome (PTSS) by Dr. Joy DeGruy, a social work researcher, to explain why many African Americans continue to experience trauma. PTSS is a condition that exists as a consequence of multigenerational oppression of African a

Racism and ambulatory blood pressure in a community sample.

OBJECTIVE: Racism has been identified as a psychosocial stressor that may contribute to disparities in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. The goal of the present article was to investigate the relationship of perceived racism to ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) in a sample of American-born Blacks and Latinos. METHODS: Participants included English-speaking Black or Latino(a) adults between the ages of 24 and 65. They completed daily mood diaries and measures of perceived racism, socioeconomic status, and hostility. Participants were outfitted with ABP monitors; 357 provided data on waki

Experiences with and reporting racism during medical school.

PURPOSE: To help create an inclusive environment, it is important to understand the experience of racism from medical students. The purpose of this study was to 1) Understand the experience of racism from medical students at two geographically similar medical schools but one being a Predominately White Institution (PWI) and the other a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), 2) Recognize similarities and differences in the racism students experience, and 3) Explore why students do not report the experienced racism. METHODS: Third- and fourth-year medical students from HBCU and PWI m

Structural Racism in Behavioral Health Presentation and Management.

Nia is a first-grade student with a history of trauma who was brought in by ambulance to the pediatric emergency department for "out of control behavior" at school. This is the first of multiple presentations to the emergency department for psychiatric evaluation, stabilization, and management throughout her elementary and middle school years. Several of the visits resulted in admission to the inpatient pediatric service, where she "boarded" while awaiting transfer to an inpatient psychiatric facility. At times, clinical teams used involuntary emergency medications and physical restraints, as

Structural racism and the impact on incarcerated midlife women.

High recidivism rates indicate that current forms of imprisonment may be an ineffective response to problems that mainly burden those ensconced in poverty and marginalization. Homelessness, unemployment, racial disparities, drug use, and mental illness, disappear from public view when the afflicted individuals are relegated to a life behind bars. Women are the fastest growing prison population and most incarcerated women are from Black and Latinx groups. Structural racism encompasses the many ways in which society fosters racial discrimination through mutually reinforcing unfair systems of hou

An actionable anti-racism plan for geoscience organizations.

Geoscience organizations shape the discipline. They influence attitudes and expectations, set standards, and provide benefits to their members. Today, racism and discrimination limit the participation of, and promote hostility towards, members of minoritized groups within these critical geoscience spaces. This is particularly harmful for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color in geoscience and is further exacerbated along other axes of marginalization, including disability status and gender identity. Here we present a twenty-point anti-racism plan that organizations can implement to buil

Structural Racism as an Environmental Justice Issue: A Multilevel Analysis of the State Racism Index and Environmental Health Risk from Air Toxics.

Communities of color and poor neighborhoods are disproportionately exposed to more air pollution-a pattern known as environmental injustices. Environmental injustices increase susceptibility to negative health outcomes among residents in affected communities. The structural mechanisms distributing environmental injustices in the USA are understudied. Bridging the literatures on the social determinants of health and environmental justice highlights the importance of the environmental conditions for health inequalities and sheds light on the institutional mechanisms driving environmental health

Indigenous excellence: confronting racism and complicity in peer review.

Racism in peer review is a common, structurally embedded, and systemic problem. However, it is often framed as isolated acts of individual-level bias. Racism in peer review manifests across interconnected societal, system, and process levels, shaping who participates in knowledge production, what is deemed credible evidence, and whose work is published. This Indigenous-led Perspective examines racism in peer review through a three-layer framework: (1) societal, (2) system, and (3) process (decision-making and interpersonal), situating peer review as one domain within the broader problem of ant

Carceral-community epidemiology, structural racism, and COVID-19 disparities.

Black and Hispanic communities are disproportionately affected by both incarceration and COVID-19. The epidemiological relationship between carceral facilities and community health during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, remains largely unexamined. Using data from Cook County Jail, we examine temporal patterns in the relationship between jail cycling (i.e., arrest and processing of individuals through jails before release) and community cases of COVID-19 in Chicago ZIP codes. We use multivariate regression analyses and a machine-learning tool, elastic regression, with 1,706 demographic control

Opioid crisis: Another mechanism used to perpetuate American racism.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, driven largely by opioid-related deaths, President Donald Trump proclaimed that the opioid problem was now a national emergency. What looks like a radical shift to a more compassionate drug policy-one that favors treatment over incarceration-has encouraged many to hope that there will be far fewer drug-related arrests and deaths than there were in previous decades. METHODS AND RESULTS: We present evidence showing that large numbers of drug-related arrests persist and that racial discrimination is evident in opioid-related arrests. In addition, conventional strategies imp
