Continuous-Time Event-Driven Temporal-Causal Attention for Intention-Driven Anticipation in Badminton.

High-speed badminton requires defenders to anticipate opponents' intentions from early kinematic cues under severe temporal and sensory constraints. Existing models rely on discrete-time assumptions and statistical correlations, failing under irregular sampling or missing frames. We propose a Continuous-Time Event-Driven Temporal-Causal Attention (CT-ACI) framework that models the intention state as a neural ordinary differential equation (Neural ODE), embeds a physical causal mask to prevent backward leakage, and introduces an adaptive integral triggering mechanism for event-driven prediction

Lateral epicondylitis: New trends and challenges in treatment.

Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a chronic aseptic inflammatory condition caused by repetitive microtrauma and excessive overload of the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle. This is the most common cause of musculoskeletal pain syndrome in the elbow, inducing significant pain and limitation of the function of the upper limb. It affects approximately 1-3% of the population and is frequently seen in racquet sports and sports associated with functional overload of the elbow, such as tennis, squash, gymnastics, acrobatics, fitness, and weight lifting. Typewriters, artists, musicians, electricians, …

Sports injuries to the upper extremity. How to recognize and deal with some common problems.

Upper extremity syndromes caused by a single stress or by repetitive microtrauma occur in a variety of sports. The throwing motion, long-distance swimming, bowling, golf, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, and field events can repetitively stress the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. The biomechanical evaluation of racquet handling, throwing, and swimming motions has progressed considerably, and the future looks promising for better identification and prevention of sports injuries due to stress. These insights will help the physician more adequately understand and treat athletic injuries. As

An epidemiologic study of sports and weight lifting as possible risk factors for herniated lumbar and cervical discs. The Northeast Collaborative Group on Low Back Pain.

The associations between participation in several specific sports, use of free weights, and use of weight lifting equipment and herniated lumbar or cervical intervertebral discs were examined in a case-control epidemiologic study. Specific sports considered were baseball or softball, golf, bowling, swimming, diving, jogging, aerobics, and racquet sports. Included in the final analysis were 287 patients with lumbar disc herniation and 63 patients with cervical disc herniation, each matched by sex, source of care, and decade of age to 1 control who was free of disc herniation and other condition…

Beneficial effects of a negative ion patch on eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage, inflammation, and exercise performance in badminton athletes.

Complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) are widely applied and accepted for therapeutic purposes because of their numerous benefits. Negative ion treatment belongs to one of the critical categories defined by the National Center for CAM, with such treatment capable of air purification and ameliorating emotional disorders (e.g., depression and seasonal affective disorder). Negative ions can be produced naturally and also by a material with activated energy. Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) often occurs due to inadequate warm up, high-intensity exercise, overload, and inappropriate p

Squash(ed): Craniofacial and vertebral injury from collision on squash court.

Squash is a popular racquet sport not usually associated with severe head or spinal injury. The incidence of squash-related injury ranges from 35.5 to 80.9 per 100,000 players, with the most common sites being the lower-limbs and eyes. We present a case of extensive traumatic craniomaxillofacial and vertebral injury resulting from collision on a squash court, without use of protective gear. The patient sustained fractures of the frontal bone, orbits, maxillae, zygomas, the first and second cervical vertebrae and the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertrebra. This is the first case of s

Question Format Matters: Do Athletes Really Know the Signs and Symptoms of a Sport-Related Concussion?

Authors of previous studies commonly used a multiselect checklist method to assess an athlete's ability to recognize true sport-related concussion (SRC) signs and symptoms (S&S) among incorrect distractor options. However, this may overinflate the evaluation of participants' knowledge because the multiselect method does not test athletes' ability to retrieve knowledge from their long-term memory. To examine this hypothesis, we sent an online survey to registered members of the Japan Lacrosse Association (n = 8530) to assess differences in reported SRC S&S by open-ended-question and multiselect

Dose-response effect of incremental lateral-wedge hardness on the lower limb Biomechanics during typical badminton footwork.

Badminton footwork has been characterised with jump-landing, cross step, side side and lunges, which requires movement agility to facilitate on-court performance. A novel badminton shoe design with systematic increase of lateral wedge hardness (Asker C value of 55, 60, 65, and 70) was developed and investigated in this study, aiming to analyse the dose-response effect of incremental wedge hardness on typical badminton footwork. Stance time and joint stiffness were employed to investigate the footwork performance, and the factorial Statistical non-Parametric Mapping and Principal Component Anal

Hamate hook nonunion initially mistaken for ulnar nerve compression: a case report with review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Hamate hook (HH) stress fractures are rare, often presenting with misleading symptoms and easily overlooked/misdiagnosed. These … tively, the patient was pain free and had returned to tennis. CONCLUSIONS: In patients involved in racquet sports with hypothenar pain and paresthesia of the ulnar side of the hand, HH fracture should be suspected. Symptoms can mimic ulnar nerve entrapment and may lead to overlooking the correct diagnosis. Treatment of choice is fractured fragment excision.

Elbow injuries in athletes.

Throwing and racquet sports produce large stresses at the elbow joint consisting of tension on the medial or ulnar side, and compression on the lateral or radial side. Medial tension can lead to tears of the common flexor origin or medial collateral ligament, ulnar nerve subluxation, or pronator teres syndrome. Bony lesions include fragmentation and partial avulsion of the medial humeral epicondyle (little league elbow) or even complete avulsion of the epicondyle. The possible sequelae of excessive lateral compression include osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum, osteochondral fractures…

Acute ulnar collateral ligament injury in the athlete.

The functional thumb is a necessity for successful athletic participation. It not only allows the athlete to manipulate athletic equipment but also allows the precise manipulation of objects in the athlete's hand. Injury to the thumb often negates power grip and finesse of the athletic hand. Injuries can range from fractures, to dislocations, to ligamentous injuries. The relatively unconstrained thumb metacarpophalangeal joint is particularly vulnerable to injury from an abduction moment to its distal segment. Such injuries occur from direct contact and with falls on equipment such as racquet

Could this unusual scaphoid fracture occurring in a badminton player be a stress fracture?

An unusual fracture of the scaphoid occurred in an otherwise healthy young badminton player, caused by a violent movement of extension/flexion of the wrist while performing a smash. There was no direct blow or fall on the wrist, nor history of wrist pain prior to the fracture. No underlying pathology was identified. Conservative treatment failed and surgical stabilization was required to achieve bone union. The diagnosis of stress fracture was suggested. The characteristics of these uncommon fractures are reviewed.

Injuries in badminton.

Though badminton is one of the most widely played sports in the world, it has received little sports medical interest. Based on the few existing studies on injuries in badminton, compared to other sports it is of relatively low risk and dominated by overuse injuries. The injury duration is relatively long, but only a few working days are lost. Anatomically, most injuries are localised to the foot and ankle. The single most frequent injuries are Achilles tendinitis and tennis elbow. Rupture of the Achilles tendon is a rare injury, which is typically seen in older recreational players. When the

"Ice Axe Wrist": A Case Report of Intersection Syndrome in 2 Climbers.

Intersection syndrome is an inflammatory condition located at the crossing point between the first and second dorsal compartments in the wrist. It is an uncommon presentation but has been recognized as an injury typical of rowers (when it is named oarsman's wrist) and other sports such as racquet sports, baseball, cycling, hockey, golf, ice hockey, skiing, and softball. It has not been previously described in climbers. This report details 2 cases of intersection associated with the use of an ice axe. The first presentation was in a female climber who was using an ice axe for climbing in the Ne…

Sport-Specific Increased Risk of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Following a Concussion in Collegiate Female Lacrosse.

Poor neurocognitive performance has been associated with a greater risk of musculoskeletal injury, and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury prevention protocols include exercises to improve neuromuscular control. Research shows that a concussion elevates the risk for subsequent lower-extremity injury, because concussions lead to lower neurocognitive performance. Studies have been conducted using data within individual male sports, such as football and rugby, or across collegiate sports in aggregate; no study has focused on women's sports. Using 7 years of data collected by athletic training
