The interferons (IFN) are one of the body's natural defensive responses to such foreign components as microbes, tumors, and antigens. The IFN response begins with the production of the IFN proteins (alpha, beta, and gamma), which then induce the antiviral, antimicrobial, antitumor, and immunomodulatory actions of IFN. BACKGROUND: Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is caused by human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) after a long latent infection. HTLV-1 induces the indolent or aggressive type of leukemia in 5% of HTLV-1 carriers. ATL, especially the aggressive type, is resistant to multi-agent chemotherapy. The indolent type often progresses to the aggressive type. Even in the most indolent-type cases, that is, smoldering ATL, the average survival time is 55.0 months.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is an aggressive peripheral T-cell neoplasm that occurs only in patients with human T-cell leukemia virus type 1. No large study or randomized trial investigating radiotherapy (RT) for ATL has been performed. We retrospectively reviewed 55 courses of RT for 41 consecutive patients with ATL who underwent RT between 2000 and 2016 at our institutions. The results showed that RT for local ATL lesions can achieve symptomatic improvement in 92% of cases. Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) typically has survivals measured in months with chemotherapy. One prior published series (1983-1991) assessed local radiotherapy for ATL. Ten consecutive patients with pathologically confirmed ATL treated with radiotherapy were reviewed. Subtypes included acute (n = 7), smoldering (n = 2), and lymphomatous (n = 1). Patients received an average of 2.5 systemic therapy regimens before radiotherapy. We report on the case of a 66-year-old patient who was hospitalized because of intractable low back pain radiating into the right leg.
