Setup, Test and Validation of a UHF RFID System for Monitoring Feeding Behaviour of Dairy Cows.

Feeding behaviour can be used as an important indicator to support animal management. However, using feeding behaviour as a tool for dairy cow management an automatic sensor system is needed. Hence, the objective of this study was to setup, test and validate a ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) system for measuring time dairy cows spent at the feed fence using two types of passive UHF ear tags. In a first experiment, the reading area of the system was evaluated in two antenna positions. Subsequently, the UHF RFID system was validated with video observations and co

The use of radio-collars for monitoring wildlife diseases: a case study from Iberian ibex affected by Sarcoptes scabiei in Sierra Nevada, Spain.

BACKGROUND: Wildlife radio tracking has gained popularity during the recent past. Ecologists and conservationists use radio-collars for different purposes: animal movement monitoring, home range, productivity, population estimation, behaviour, habitat use, survival, and predator-prey interaction, among others. The aim of our present study is to highlight the application of radio-collars for wildlife diseases monitoring. The spread of wildlife diseases and the efficacy of management actions for controlling them propose serious challenges for ecologists and conservationists, since it is difficul

An Implantable Inductive Near-Field Communication System with 64 Channels for Acquisition of Gastrointestinal Bioelectrical Activity.

High-resolution (HR) mapping of the gastrointestinal (GI) bioelectrical activity is an emerging method to define the GI dysrhythmias such as gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia. Currently, there is no solution available to conduct HR mapping in long-term studies. We have developed an implantable 64-channel closed-loop near-field communication system for real-time monitoring of gastric electrical activity. The system is composed of an implantable unit (IU), a wearable unit (WU), and a stationary unit (SU) connected to a computer. Simultaneous data telemetry and power transfer between the IU

Requirements-driven automation of a social home-cage access-control system for rat cognitive testing.

BACKGROUND: Understanding cognition is essential for advancing treatments for human disorders. Rodent studies remain important for investigating underlying mechanisms. Traditional testing often involves handling, isolation and experimenter variability, which can reduce data quality. NEW METHOD: We present the automated Social RatPad, a home-cage access-control system enabling socially housed rats to reach touchscreen-based RatPad chambers without manual separation. The chamber presents stimuli, records responses and delivers pellets; this study validates the access-control and logging layer c

Frequent range visits further from the shed relate positively to free-range broiler chicken welfare.

Little is known about the implications of accessing an outdoor range for broiler chicken welfare, particularly in relation to the distance ranged from the shed. Therefore, we monitored individual ranging behaviour of commercial free-range broiler chickens and identified relationships with welfare indicators. The individual ranging behaviour of 305 mixed-sex Ross 308 broiler chickens was tracked on a commercial farm from the second day of range access to slaughter age (from 16 to 42 days of age) by radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The radio frequency identification antennas wer

Relationship between welfare and individual ranging behaviour in commercial free-range laying hens.

Laying hens housed in free-range systems have access to an outdoor range, and individual hens within a flock differ in their ranging behaviour. Whether there is a link between ranging and laying hen welfare remains unclear. We analysed the relationships between ranging by individual hens on a commercial free-range layer farm and behavioural, physiological and health measures of animal welfare. We hypothesised that hens that access the range more will be (1) less fearful in general and in response to novelty and humans, (2) have better health in terms of physical body condition and (3) have a r

Localizing small lung lesions in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery via radiofrequency identification marking.

BACKGROUND: To facilitate accurate localization of small lung lesions in thoracoscopic surgery, we employed a micro-radiofrequency identification tag designed to be delivered through the 2-mm working channel of a flexible bronchoscope. This report presents the results of preclinical studies of our novel localizing technique in a canine model. METHODS: To evaluate functional placement, three types of tags [Group A, tag alone (n = 18); Group B, tag + resin anchor (n = 15); and Group C, tag + NiTi coil anchor (n = 15)] were bronchoscopically placed in subpleural areas and subsegmental bronchi vi

A spatiotemporal simulation study on the transmission of harmful microorganisms through connected healthcare workers in a hospital ward setting.

BACKGROUND: Hand transmission of harmful microorganisms may lead to infections and poses a major threat to patients and healthcare workers in healthcare settings. The most effective countermeasure against these transmissions is the adherence to spatiotemporal hand hygiene policies, but adherence rates are relatively low and vary over space and time. The spatiotemporal effects on hand transmission and spread of these microorganisms for varying hand hygiene compliance levels are unknown. This study aims to (1) identify a healthcare worker occupancy group of potential super-spreaders and (2) quan

Prevention of retained surgical items.

Reduction in retained surgical items is an important part of any operating room patient-safety effort. Any item used in an operation can result in a retained surgical item, but sponges are the most frequent and the abdomen is the most common location. Retained sponges can cause significant morbidity, and the costs associated with both prevention and treatment of retained surgical items, including legal costs, can be considerable. This review will examine counting, teamwork, radiography, and new technology as methods used to prevent retained surgical items. Even though none of these techniques

Promoting autonomy in a smart home environment with a smarter interface.

In the not too distant future, the median population age will tend towards 65; an age at which the need for dependency increases. Most older people want to remain autonomous and self-sufficient for as long as possible. As environments become smarter home automation solutions can be provided to support this aspiration. The technology discussed within this paper focuses on providing a home automation system that can be controlled by most users regardless of mobility restrictions, and hence it may be applicable to older people. It comprises a hybrid Brain-Computer Interface, home automation user

Physiological and behavioral responses of an arboreal mammal to smoke and charcoal-ash substrate.

The recent observation that torpor plays a key role in post-fire survival has been mainly attributed to the reduced food resources after fires. However, some of these adjustments can be facilitated or amplified by environmental changes associated with fires, such as the presence of a charcoal-ash substrate. In a previous experiment on a small terrestrial mammal the presence of charcoal and ash linked to food restriction intensified torpor use. However, whether fire cues also act as a trigger of torpor use when food is available and whether they affect other species including arboreal mammals r

A new laboratory radio frequency identification (RFID) system for behavioural tracking of marine organisms.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) devices are currently used to quantify several traits of animal behaviour with potential applications for the study of marine organisms. To date, behavioural studies with marine organisms are rare because of the technical difficulty of propagating radio waves within the saltwater medium. We present a novel RFID tracking system to study the burrowing behaviour of a valuable fishery resource, the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus L.). The system consists of a network of six controllers, each handling a group of seven antennas. That network was placed below

A Novel Mouse Home Cage Lickometer System Reveals Sex- and Housing-Based Influences on Alcohol Drinking.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a significant global health issue. Despite historically higher rates among men, AUD prevalence and negative alcohol-related outcomes in women are rising. Loneliness in humans has been associated with increased alcohol use, and traditional rodent drinking models involve single housing, presenting challenges for studying social enrichment. We developed LIQ PARTI (Lick Instance Quantifier with Poly-Animal RFID Tracking Integration), an open-source tool to examine home cage continuous access two-bottle choice drinking behavior in a group-housed setting, investigating

Artificial intelligence enabled smart mask for speech recognition for future hearing devices.

In recent years, Lip-reading has emerged as a significant research challenge. The aim is to recognise speech by analysing Lip movements. The majority of Lip-reading technologies are based on cameras and wearable devices. However, these technologies have well-known occlusion and ambient lighting limitations, privacy concerns as well as wearable device discomfort for subjects and disturb their daily routines. Furthermore, in the era of coronavirus (COVID-19), where face masks are the norm, vision-based and wearable-based technologies for hearing aids are ineffective. To address the fundamental l

The use of pulsed radio frequency energy therapy in treating lower extremity wounds: results of a retrospective study of a wound registry.

Pulsed radio frequency energy (PRFE) has been shown to stimulate cultured epidermal cells in vitro, inciting a cascade of cytokines, cyclins, growth factors, and other gene products associated with wound healing. A retrospective, descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the effect of PRFE on healing lower extremity wounds. Using data from a patient registry of 510 wounds in 413 patients, information was abstracted on patients with lower extremity wounds treated with PRFE for at least 4 weeks between 2005 and 2008 and who were evaluated 4 weeks after the start of treatment; wou

Evaluation of radiofrequency identification tag accuracy using bronchoscopy with fluoroscopy and virtual navigation guidance before segmentectomy.

BACKGROUND: The use of sublobar resection has increased with advances in imaging technologies. However, it is difficult for thoracic surgeons to identify small lung tumours intraoperatively. Radiofrequency identification (RFID) lung-marking systems are useful for overcoming this difficulty; however, accurate placement is essential for maximum effectiveness. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent RFID tag placement via fluoroscopic bronchoscopy under virtual bronchoscopic navigation (VBN) guidance before our institution's sublobar resection of lung lesions.
