INTRODUCTION: Children with spina bifida (SB) have a high degree of exposure to latex products as a consequence of repeated surgical procedures, implantation of latex-containing materials and catheterisation. The consequence is a higher incidence of latex allergic reactions.

Different ways of collecting relatively large volumes of nasal secretion with as physiological a composition as possible were studied. Nasal secretion was collected by the so-called nasal spray washing method from 5 patients with allergic rhinitis due to pollen and 5 healthy persons during a pollen-free season. The authors determined the content of total immunoglobulins of the E class in the blood plasma: native (IgE) and exhausted by a streptococcal allergen in the dynamics of the disease in 145 patients with erysipelas. The level of antistreptococcal reagins was evaluated. It was established that at the onset of erysipelas the concentration of IgE and a-IgE showed a short-term increase in 52 +/- 4% and 87 +/- 3% of patients correspondingly. Radioimmunosorbent assays for determination of serum content of the neutrophil proteins myeloperoxidase and lactoferrin are described. Serial studies were performed in patients with neutropenia. In 2 cases of cyclic neutropenia the myeloperoxidase level showed slight variations within the normal range during the cycle while lactoferrin displayed a clear correlation with neutrophil counts. BACKGROUND: A systemic reaction to mycobacteria biases the balance of T helper cell types 1 and 2 toward T helper cell type 1. BCG vaccination mimics some characteristics of mycobacterial infection. Children who have undergone tuberculin conversion after BCG vaccination seem to be more likely to lose their atopic symptoms. Inhibition of both allergic response and airway hyperreactivity after vaccination for mycobacteria has been observed in animal experiments.

Hypersensitivity to ingested hen's egg yolk is described in a 65-year-old female patient. The patient's symptoms started in adult life and coincided with the acquisition of a parrot as a household pet. The bird's presence caused complaints of allergic rhinitis, while the ingestion of eggs caused urticaria and angioedema. Analysis of sequential blood serum samples revealed high levels of IgE antibodies to egg yolk and to various bird sera, but no precipitins. RAST-inhibition experiments indicated that the primary sensitization may have been to antigens from the parrot.

Carbonic anhydrase activity was found in the ciliary process of fresh human donor eyes, originating from an enzyme antigenically similar to the erythrocyte high-activity isoenzyme HCA C. It was sensitive to inhibition by acetazolamide and resistant to inhibition by halides like HCA C. The enzyme is probably identical with HCA C. Its tissue concentration was one fifth to one tenth of that in the human kidney. The erythrocyte low-activity isoenzyme HCA B was also found in the processes as a contaminant.

Using a radioimmunoassay technique, we have determined the total IgE concentration and specific IgE antibody level against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in the sera of patients with mycologically confirmed active paracoccidioidcosis.
