The partition of 5,5-dimethyloxazolidine-2,4-dione (DMO) and of 11 amines between the vascular and extravascular spaces of the lung has been determined by the multiple indicator dilution technique. Four amines (nicotine, pentylamine, quinine, and benzylamine) were found to have pH-sensitive tissue to blood concentration ratios. Of these, tritiated nicotine appears to be the nost satisfactory indicator of tissue pH and values for the pH of the pulmonary extravascular space (pH(e)) have been calculated from the nicotine data. The presence of ribonuclease inhibitor and/or the activity of class I ribonucleases can conveniently be measured, at all stages of purification, by a highly sensitive assay based on the loss of radioactivity during the concomitant hydrolysis of tRNA and small amounts of 14C-labeled aminoacyl-tRNA. The rapid, economical assay, which is readily adaptable to homologous tRNA substrates, eliminates the necessity of filtration, centrifugation and ultraviolet spectroscopy measurements required by most other assays and is particularly suitable for multiple samples and kinetic measurements.

In previous communications we described an in vitro model system containing highly purified thyroid peroxidase (TPO) for studying the mechanism of inhibition of thyroid hormone biosynthesis by the antithyroid drugs, 6-propylthiouracil (PTU) and 1-methyl-2-mercaptoimidazole (MMI). In four separate experiments, rats with liver reserves of vitamin A ranging from deficient to high were administered physiological doses (5, 10 or 20 micrograms) of [11,12-3H] retinol, either by gastric intubation or intraperitoneal injection, and sacrificed after either 7 days or 5 hours. Measurements were then made of radioactivity and vitamin A in plasma and liver. In all four experiments there was a highly significant negative correlation between the logarithm of the specific activity of plasma vitamin A and the logarithm of total liver vitamin A.

Imizol injection (imidocarb) is used for the prevention and treatment of babesiosis in cattle. Studies in sheep indicate that imidocarb is retained in edible tissues (Aliu et al.). In the present study we have set up and validated a high-performance liquid chromatography based method to investigate the retention of imidocarb in cattle liver. Imidocarb was still detectable 224 d after a single therapeutic dose with a half-life of 42.7 d. The mechanism of imidocarb retention by bovine liver was modelled using isolated bovine hepatocytes. In 10 patients with arterial occlusions, 125-I fibrinogen was injected intravenously. In all patients with acute embolic or thrombotic arterial occlusions verified surgically and/or angiographically, a significant accumulation of radioactivity in the affected region was observed. The use of 125-I fibrinogen in this manner obviously is a valuable means for the detection and localization of acute arterial occlusions.

The spinal cord blood flow has been measured in anaesthetized dogs using an inert radioactive gas ((133)Xenon) clearance technique. The (133)Xe was placed in the cord by direct injection. This study has demonstrated that the flows obtained from the white matter are reproducible and that there is little variation in blood flow in the white matter between different thoracolumbar segments in the same dog. No difference was found in blood flow between dogs anaesthetized with halothane, trichlorethylene, or pentobarbitone.

A new marine sediment certified reference material, NMIJ CRM 7306-a, for butyltin and phenyltin analysis has been prepared and certified by the National Metrological Institute of Japan at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (NMIJ/AIST).
