Tolerance and early outcome results of postprostatectomy three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) has been associated with a reduction in acute and late toxicity among patients treated for localized prostatic cancer. The purpose of this study is to assess the acute and late toxicity of 3D-CRT delivered to patients in the postprostatectomy setting and to analyze which factors predict for durable biochemical control in this group of patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1988 and 1994, 42 patients were treated after prostatectomy with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy. The median time from prostatectomy to radiotherapy was

Three-dimensional conformal simultaneously integrated boost technique for breast-conserving radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: To compare the target coverage and normal tissue dose with the simultaneously integrated boost (SIB) and the sequential boost technique in breast cancer, and to evaluate the incidence of acute skin toxicity in patients treated with the SIB technique. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty patients with early-stage left-sided breast cancer underwent breast-conserving radiotherapy using the SIB technique. The breast and boost planning target volumes (PTVs) were treated simultaneously (i.e., for each fraction, the breast and boost PTVs received 1.81 Gy and 2.3 Gy, respectively). Three-dimensiona

[A matched cohort analysis of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy versus conventional radiotherapy for primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Comparing with two-dimensional conventional radiotherapy (2D CRT), three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D CRT) features a precise tumor target volume positioning and a three-dimensional display of the tumor and surrounding normal tissues, therefore, helps to spare normal tissues in the radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study was to explore whether 3D CRT can increase the locoregional control rate while reduce the occurrence and severity of radiation-related sequelae for primary NPC patients. METHODS: Clinical data of 95 primary NPC patients, t

A Comparison of Gastrointestinal Toxicities between Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy and Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is considered the treatment option for locally advanced pancreatic cancer, but accompanying gastrointestinal toxicities are the most common complication. With the introduction of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3-D CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), CCRT-related adverse events are expected to diminish. Here, we evaluated the benefits of radiation modalities by comparing gastrointestinal toxicities between 3-D CRT and IMRT. METHODS: Patients who received CCRT between July 2010 and June 2012 in Severance Hospital, Yon

Conventional 2D (2DRT) and 3D conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) versus intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for nasopharyngeal cancer treatment.

PURPOSE: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma represents a distinct entity as compared to other head and neck tumours. Radio-chemotherapy is the treatment of first choice in non-metastatic disease. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) allows the sparing of parotid glands, improving the toxicity profile. The aim of this study was to compare the results obtained with IMRT with those obtained with conventional 2D (2DRT) and 3D conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT) in terms of tumour control, survival, acute and late toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the clinical records of 52 patients with

Intensity modulated radiotherapy in early stage Hodgkin lymphoma patients: is it better than three dimensional conformal radiotherapy?

BACKGROUND: Cure rate of early Hodgkin Lymphoma are high and avoidance of late toxicities is of paramount importance. This comparative study aims to assess the normal tissue sparing capability of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) versus standard three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) in terms of dose-volume parameters and normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) for different organs at risk in supradiaphragmatic Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) patients. METHODS: Ten HL patients were actually treated with 3D-CRT and all treatments were then re-planned with IMRT. Dose-volume pa

Comparison of treatment plans using intensity-modulated radiotherapy and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy for paranasal sinus carcinoma.

PURPOSE: To compare intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) treatment planning with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) planning for paranasal sinus carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment plans using traditional 3-field technique, 3D-CRT planning, and inverse planning IMRT were developed for a case of paranasal sinus cancer requiring adjuvant radiotherapy. Plans were compared with respect to dose conformality, dose-volume histograms, doses to critical normal tissues, and ease of treatment delivery. RESULTS: The inverse-planned IMRT technique was more conformal around the t

Efficacy of hydrogel spacer compared with intensity-modulated radiotherapy for 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

One major adverse effect of prostate radiotherapy is associated with the rectum. The SpaceOAR system has been developed to address this problem, as it enables treatment planning with a reduced dose to the rectum. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the treatment plans between three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for prostate cancer using the SpaceOAR system. Thirty-five patients treated with prostate cancer radiation using the SpaceOAR system received a total radiation dose of 60 Gy/20 fractions. The dose constraints and robustness

Effectiveness of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy for treating early primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: In 2-dimensional radiotherapy, the irradiating portal is defined mainly by soft tissues and bony structures, so the exact location of nasopharyngeal tumors and many spatial relationships are unknown, resulting in high local-regional relapse rates and radiation toxicities. Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D CRT) provides more precise targeting of radiation. We studied whether 3D CRT could maintain survival and increase local-regional tumor control whereas reducing the morbidity and severity of radiation toxicity in patients with early primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

A pilot study of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the potential role of three-dimensional (3-D) conformal radiotherapy (RT) in treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: Thirteen patients were included in this study, which was conducted between 1993 and 1996. Nine patients (group A) were treated with 3-D conformal RT alone because of main portal vein thrombosis, inferior vena cava thrombosis, obstructive jaundice and failure of previous transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) to control the disease. The remaining four patients (group B) were treated with a
