Cyanogenesis, the liberation of volatile hydrogen cyanide from endogenous cyanide-containing compounds, is a proven plant defence mechanism and the particular cyanogens involved have taxonomic utility. The cyclopentenoncyanhydrin glycoside gynocardin was the only cyanogen isolated from foliar tissue of the rare Australian rainforest tree, Ryparosa kurrangii (Achariaceae). Mechanical damage simulating foliar herbivory did not induce a significant increase in the expression of cyanogenesis over a 24h period, indicating cyanogenic herbivore defence in R. kurrangii is constitutive. The cyanogenic

Canopy leaf abundance of Amazon rainforests increases in the dry season but decreases in the wet season, contrary to earlier expectations of water stress adversely affecting plant functions. Drivers of this seasonality, particularly the role of water availability, remain debated. We introduce satellite-based ecophysiological indicators to demonstrate that Amazon rainforests are constrained by water during dry seasons despite light-driven canopy greening. Evidence includes a shifted partitioning of photosynthetically active radiation toward more isoprene emissions and synchronized declines in l

INTRODUCTION: Wildfires and deforestation potentially have direct effects on multiple health outcomes as well as indirect consequences for climate change. Tropical rainforest areas are characterised by high rainfall, humidity and temperature, and they are predominantly found in low-income and middle-income countries. This study aims to synthesise the methods, data and health outcomes reported in scientific papers on wildfires and deforestation in these locations.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will carry out a scoping review according to the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI) manual for scoping review

Mosquito sampling using efficient traps that can assess species diversity and/or presence of dominant vectors is important for understanding the entomological risk of mosquito-borne disease transmission. Here, we present results from a survey of mosquito species sampled with ovitraps in a neotropical rainforest of Costa Rica. We found the method to be an efficient sampling tool. With a total sampling effort of 29 traps, we collected 157 fourth-instar larvae and three pupae belonging to eight mosquito taxonomic units (seven species and individuals from a homogenous taxonomic unit identified to

OBJECTIVE: To compare the abundance of Anopheles pseudopunctipennis and other anopheline mosquitoes in three different wild areas, modified by human activities, and to verify how environmental differences affect the spatial distribution of these mosquitoes.
METHODS: Samples were collected monthly from December 2001 to December 2002 in Yungas de Salta, Argentina. CO2 -baited CDC light traps were placed at each sample site (forest, transition area and peridomiciliary area). In the peridomiciliary area, two agents also suctioned mosquitoes from house walls. Species diversity and abundance indice

The Amazon rainforest is one of Earth's most diverse ecosystems, playing a key role in maintaining regional and global climate stability. However, recent changes in land use, vegetation, and the climate have disrupted biosphere-atmosphere interactions, leading to significant alterations in the water, energy, and carbon cycles. These disturbances have far-reaching consequences for the entire Earth system. Here, we quantify the relative contributions of deforestation and global climate change to observed shifts in key Amazonian climate parameters. We analyzed long-term atmospheric and land cover

This study explores the exposure of sylvatic bats to dengue virus (DENV) by detecting neutralizing antibodies against the virus in the Argentinean Yungas. Blood samples from 143 bats were tested using PRNT, revealing DENV-1 antibodies in three individuals (Sturnira lilium, S. erythromos, Artibeus planirostris) from sylvatic habitats of Jujuy. Presence of DENV-1 antibodies in sylvatic bats suggests potential exposure to the virus in wild areas, indicating the potential endemicity of DENV in subtropical areas of Argentina. Further research is needed to understand the mechanism through which DENV

The convergent evolution of the human pygmy phenotype in tropical rainforests is widely assumed to reflect adaptation in response to the distinct ecological challenges of this habitat (e.g. high levels of heat and humidity, high pathogen load, low food availability, and dense forest structure), yet few precise adaptive benefits of this phenotype have been proposed. Here, we describe and test a biomechanical model of how the rainforest environment can alter gait kinematics such that short stature is advantageous in dense habitats. We hypothesized that environmental constraints on step length in

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of histoplasmosis have been increasingly reported in association with travel to endemic areas. Multiple outbreaks have been reported following travel to the Americas, but reports of pulmonary histoplasmosis in short-term immunocompetent travelers to Africa are rare.
METHODS: A biology student was referred to our unit with suspected pulmonary histoplasmosis following her return from a field trip in the Ugandan rainforest. The patient informed us that several of her multinational student colleagues on the same expedition had developed a similar illness. Using an alert in P

Atmospheric concentrations of aldehydes and monoaromatic hydrocarbons were determined in Tijuca Forest, the largest urban tropical forest in the Americas. The forest is a protected area, surrounded by the city of Rio de Janeiro. Data were also obtained in a commercial and a residential area for comparison. A total of 160 aldehyde samples and 60 BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene and xylenes) samples were collected from four locations between January and August of 2008. The aldehydes were collected using C18 resin cartridges coated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine and analyzed by high perform

In the tropical rainforest area of Cameroon, people are affected by blackflies (Simulium spp.) and mosquitoes (Anopheles spp). Use of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) has been promoted to protect vulnerable groups from mosquito bites, whereas historically indoor residual spraying (IRS) was the primary intervention. In a malaria-endemic area, a pilot study examined different mosquito control interventions applied to entire villages to assess their impact on vectors, malaria incidence and the quality of life of the communities. The Sanaga River near these villages was treated with insecticide

Understanding how species responded to climatic change in the past can help predict the long-term implications of contemporary climate change. The Upper Guinean rainforests of West Africa are a global biodiversity hotspot, and it is well documented that climatic fluctuations in the Pleistocene drove the expansion and contraction of rainforest cover in this region. West African slippery frogs, genus Conraua, are rainforest specialists and present an excellent opportunity to study the effects of climate-driven landscape changes on contemporary phylogeographic patterns and population dynamics. Critical to the mitigation of parasitic vector-borne diseases is the development of accurate spatial predictions that integrate environmental conditions conducive to pathogen proliferation. Species of Plasmodium and Trypanosoma readily infect humans, and are also common in birds. Here, we develop predictive spatial models for the prevalence of these blood parasites in the olive sunbird (Cyanomitra olivacea). Since this species exhibits high natural parasite prevalence and occupies diverse habitats in tropical Africa, it represents a distinctive ecological model system for studying vector-borne

AbstractSeasonal leaf dynamics in tropical rainforests directly affect canopy photosynthetic capacity and carbon assimilation. Although hypotheses such as water stress, solar light, and herbivore pressure have been proposed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms, controversies remain because of the complexity of this phenomenon. In this study, we tested the "carbon-gain (C-gain) benefit" hypothesis, which proposes that seasonal leaf dynamics optimize C-gain by matching photosynthetic capacity with favorable environmental conditions, using 13-year community-level data from a tropical seasonal r

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recent studies on desiccation-tolerant Australian rainforest seeds demonstrated that some were short-lived in storage. We sought to understand structural changes of storage lipids that might occur during storage at -20 °C that could contribute to a short lifespan.
METHODS: We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to examine exothermic and endothermic transitions during freezing and thawing in dry seed samples of 23 species. Seed samples and extracted triacylglycerols (TAGs) were cooled to -150 °C and rewarmed to 50 °C at 10 °C min-1; slower and faster rates of cool

One of the least understood aspects in atmospheric chemistry is how urban emissions influence the formation of natural organic aerosols, which affect Earth's energy budget. The Amazon rainforest, during its wet season, is one of the few remaining places on Earth where atmospheric chemistry transitions between preindustrial and urban-influenced conditions. Here, we integrate insights from several laboratory measurements and simulate the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the Amazon using a high-resolution chemical transport model. Simulations show that emissions of nitrogen-oxides

Living in groups provides benefits but also incurs costs such as attracting disease vectors. For example, synanthropic flies associate with human settlements, and higher fly densities increase pathogen transmission. We investigated whether such associations also exist in highly mobile nonhuman primate (NHP) Groups. We studied flies in a group of wild sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys atys) and three communities of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire. We observed markedly higher fly densities within both mangabey and chimpanzee groups. Using a mark-recapt

The amphibian disease chytridiomycosis, caused by the pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, has been implicated in mass mortalities, population declines and extinctions of amphibians around the world. In almost all cases, amphibian species that have disappeared or declined due to chytridiomycosis coexist with non-declining species. One reason why some species decline from chytridiomycosis and others do not may be interspecific differences in behaviour. Host behaviour could either facilitate or hinder pathogen transmission, and transmission rates in the field are likely to vary among species

BACKGROUND: Since its beginning in 1999, the Schistosomiasis Control Program within the Unified Health System (PCE-SUS) has registered a cumulative coverage of just 20% of the population from the Rainforest Zone of Pernambuco (ZMP), northeast Brazil. This jeopardizes the accomplishment of the minimum goal of the Fifty-Fourth World Health Assembly, resolution WHA54.19, of providing treatment for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) to 75% of school-aged children at risk, which requires attending at least 166,000 residents in the 7-14 age range by year 2010 in that important
