The seasonal and spatial fluctuations of heavy metals in the liver of the frog Rana ridibunda from a river in Western Ukraine were investigated. Liver weight was seen to increase from spring to summer/autumn, most probably as a result of accumulation of metabolites, especially fat and glycogen. The chlorpromazine, a calmodulin inhibitor, has been studied for its action on the contraction force and calcium current of the frog atrium fibres. The distribution of galanin-like immunoreactivity was studied in the adrenal gland of the frog Rana ridibunda using the indirect immunofluorescence technique. A dense network of varicose fibers immunoreactive to galanin was found in the adrenal tissue. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and galanin were isolated in pure form from the stomach of the European green frog, Rana ridibunda. Frog VIP is identical to the previously characterized VIP from chicken and alligator. The new nonhormonal activator of adenylate cyclase forskolin was studied on frog atrial trabeculae by current clamp and voltage clamp methods using a double sucrose gap technique. Forskolin (5 X 10(-6) M to 2 X 10(-5) M) dose-dependently increased action potential duration, the height of the plateau and twitch tension. Aprindine is a very effective antiarrhythmic agent with a narrow therapeutic-toxic ratio. It has been used successfully in treating patients who have both supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias. A stable localized region of high calcium concentration near the plasma membrane has been postulated to exist as an outcome of prolonged calcium influx and to play a crucial role in regulation of cellular life.
