Predicting curve progression for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis using random forest model.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional (3D) spinal deformity characterized by coronal curvature and rotational deformity. Predicting curve progression is important for the selection and timing of treatment. Although there is a consensus in the literature regarding prognostic factors associated with curve progression, the order of importance, as well as the combination of factors that are most predictive of curve progression is unknown. OBJECTIVES: (1) create an ordered list of prognostic factors that most contribute to curve progression, and (2) develop and v

ECG-based pulse detection during cardiac arrest using random forest classifier.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the industrialized world. Pulse detection is essential for the recognition of the arrest and the recognition of return of spontaneous circulation during therapy, and it is therefore crucial for the survival of the patient. This paper introduces the first method based exclusively on the ECG for the automatic detection of pulse during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Random forest classifier is used to efficiently combine up to nine features from the time, frequency, slope, and regularity analysis of the ECG. Data from 191 cardiac arre

Predicting host tropism of influenza A virus proteins using random forest.

BACKGROUND: Majority of influenza A viruses reside and circulate among animal populations, seldom infecting humans due to host range restriction. Yet when some avian strains do acquire the ability to overcome species barrier, they might become adapted to humans, replicating efficiently and causing diseases, leading to potential pandemic. With the huge influenza A virus reservoir in wild birds, it is a cause for concern when a new influenza strain emerges with the ability to cross host species barrier, as shown in light of the recent H7N9 outbreak in China. Several influenza proteins have been

Automatic location of vertebrae on DXA images using random forest regression.

We provide a fully automatic method of segmenting vertebrae in DXA images. This is of clinical relevance to the diagnosis of osteoporosis by vertebral fracture, and to grading fractures in clinical trials. In order to locate the vertebrae we train detectors for the upper and lower vertebral endplates. Each detector uses random forest regressor voting applied to Haar-like input features. The regressors are applied at a grid of points across the image, and each tree votes for an endplate centre position. Modes in the smoothed vote image are endplate candidates, some of which are the neighbouring

Improving prediction of fragility fractures in postmenopausal women using random forest.

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease characterized by a progressive decline in bone density and quality, leading to increased bone fragility and a higher susceptibility to fractures, even in response to minimal trauma. Osteoporotic fractures represent a major source of morbidity and mortality among postmenopausal women. This condition poses both clinical and societal challenges, as its consequences include a significant reduction in quality of life, prolonged dependency, and a substantial increase in healthcare costs. Therefore, the development of reliable tools for predicting fracture risk is es

A predictive model based on random forest for shoulder-hand syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: The shoulder-hand syndrome (SHS) severely impedes the function recovery process of patients after stroke. It is incapable to identify the factors at high risk for its occurrence, and there is no effective treatment. This study intends to apply the random forest (RF) algorithm in ensemble learning to establish a predictive model for the occurrence of SHS after stroke, aiming to identify high-risk SHS in the first-stroke onset population and discuss possible therapeutic methods. METHODS: We retrospectively studied all the first-onset stroke patients with one-side hemiplegia, then 36

Breast cancer risk prediction in African women using Random Forest Classifier.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most important steps in combating breast cancer is early and accurate diagnosis. Unfortunately, breast cancer is asymptomatic at the early stage, although some symptoms are presented at a later time, but at symptomatic stage treatment could be complicated or even become impossible thereby leading to death. Proper risk assessment is hence very important in reducing mortality. Some computational techniques have been developed for breast cancer risk assessment in the developed world, but such techniques do not work well in Africa because of the difference in risk profiles

Feature Extraction for Heroin-Use Classification Using Imbalanced Random Forest Methods.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) contains a large number of responses and many features. This study aims to identify features from within NSDUH that are important in classifying heroin use. Proper implementation of random forest (RF) techniques copes with the highly imbalanced nature of heroin usage among respondents to identify features that are prominent in classification models involving nonlinear combinations of predictive variables. To date, methods for the proper application of RF to imbalanced medical datasets have not been defined. Methods: Three different RF classifi

Lesion segmentation from multimodal MRI using random forest following ischemic stroke.

Understanding structure-function relationships in the brain after stroke is reliant not only on the accurate anatomical delineation of the focal ischemic lesion, but also on previous infarcts, remote changes and the presence of white matter hyperintensities. The robust definition of primary stroke boundaries and secondary brain lesions will have significant impact on investigation of brain-behavior relationships and lesion volume correlations with clinical measures after stroke. Here we present an automated approach to identify chronic ischemic infarcts in addition to other white matter pathol

Mapping flood susceptibility using Random Forest exploiting satellite observations and geomorphic features.

Flood events are among the most destructive natural hazards, requiring comprehensive risk management strategies to mitigate their impact on society and the environment. This study uses the potential of the Random Forest (RF) model to assess the flood susceptibility in Italy, evaluating 26 potential flood conditioning factors (FCF). A holistic strategy called Average Merit of Information (AMI) was employed to maximize the information contained within FCFs. At the same time, correlation issues were addressed using the Pearson correlation index and the Variance Inflation Factor (VIF). Satellite o

Forensic geolocation of Norwegian soil samples using random forest analysis of microbiomes.

Soil is a substrate easily picked up during everyday activities due to its ubiquity and adhesiveness. A method to determine the origin of soil precisely would therefore be useful in forensic casework as it can provide insight into a person`s or object`s previous whereabouts. To evaluate the potential of microbiomes for soil provenance determination, we collected soil samples from 15 locations in and around Oslo, Norway. Samples were collected multiple times from the same locations to assess changes in the microbiome over time. Additionally, a mock soil stain on clothing sample was collected at

Accelerating Big Data Analysis through LASSO-Random Forest Algorithm in QSAR Studies.

MOTIVATION: The aim of quantitative structure-activity prediction (QSAR) studies is to identify novel drug-like molecules that can be suggested as lead compounds by means of two approaches, which are discussed in this article. First, to identify appropriate molecular descriptors by focusing on one feature-selection algorithms; and second to predict the biological activities of designed compounds. Recent studies have shown increased interest in the prediction of a huge number of molecules, known as Big Data, using deep learning models. However, despite all these efforts to solve critical challe

A random forest based computational model for predicting novel lncRNA-disease associations.

BACKGROUND: Accumulated evidence shows that the abnormal regulation of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) is associated with various human diseases. Accurately identifying disease-associated lncRNAs is helpful to study the mechanism of lncRNAs in diseases and explore new therapies of diseases. Many lncRNA-disease association (LDA) prediction models have been implemented by integrating multiple kinds of data resources. However, most of the existing models ignore the interference of noisy and redundancy information among these data resources. RESULTS: To improve the ability of LDA prediction models,

Automatic hip geometric feature extraction in DXA imaging using regional random forest.

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture is considered one of the salient disability factors across the global population. People with hip fractures are prone to become permanently disabled or die from complications. Although currently the premier determiner, bone mineral density has some notable limitations in terms of hip fracture risk assessment. OBJECTIVES: To learn more about bone strength, hip geometric features (HGFs) can be collected. However, organizing a hip fracture risk study for a large population using a manual HGFs collection technique would be too arduous to be practical. Thus, an automatic H

Random Forest Modeling to Predict Small Molecule Accumulation in Gram-Negative Bacteria.

Despite extensive efforts over the past ∼60 years to discover new classes of Gram-negative-active antibiotics, the development pipeline remains relatively dry. These failures can be largely ascribed to the complexity of the Gram-negative membranes and an inadequate understanding of physicochemical properties associated with compound permeation, efflux evasion, and overall accumulation in Gram-negative pathogens. Recent work using unbiased accumulation assays and advanced chemical descriptors has utilized machine learning algorithms, particularly random forest modeling, to correlate physicochem

Detecting mild cognitive impairment by applying integrated random forest to finger tapping.

Early detection of dementia is essential to reduce the decline in quality of life (QoL) and the increase in medical and nursing care costs associated with dementia in an aging society. In this study, we aimed to develop a simple screening test for mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a preliminary stage of dementia, by creating an analytical method to accurately detect MCI through finger-tapping measurement. We extracted 248 characteristics from the finger-tapping waveforms of 182 MCI patients and 352 normal controls, applying five conventional classification methods along with an improved Random
