Extra-intestinal localization of Goussia sp. (Apicomplexa) oocysts in Rana dalmatina (Anura: Ranidae), and the fate of infection after metamorphosis.

Although coccidia of the genus Goussia are common parasites of fish, only 2 species have been described in amphibians: G. hyperolisi from common reed frogs Hyperolius viridiflavus from Kenya and G. neglecta from unspecified European water frogs of the genus Rana from Germany. The genus Goussia is characterized by an oocyst, with a fine oocyst wall, containing 4 dizoic sporocysts that are composed of 2 valves joined by a longitudinal suture and lacking a Stieda body (typical for the genus Eimeria). To date, infections in amphibians were generally considered to be specific to the intestine of aq

Opposite effects of cooling on twitch contractions of skeletal muscle isolated from tropical toads (Leptodactylidae) and northern frogs (Ranidae).

Cooling increases the twitch force of frog skeletal muscle (Rana temporaria; Rana pipiens), but decreases the twitch force of tropical toad muscle (Leptodactylus insularis). Action potentials and intramembranous charge movement in frog and toad fibers were slowed identically by cooling. Cooling increased the integral of twitch Ca2+ detected by aequorin in frog fibers (1.4-fold), while also decreasing the peak and slowing the rate of decay. Conversely, cooling decreased the integral (0.6-fold) and the peak of twitch Ca2+ in toad fibers, without affecting the rate of decay. The difference in ent

A global survey of tapeworms (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) of 'true' frogs (Amphibia: Ranidae), including a tabulated list of all proteocephalids parasitising amphibians.

Proteocephalid tapeworms of frogs of the family Ranidae ('true' frogs) are reviewed with emphasis on their species diversity, host specificity and geographical distribution. New molecular data (nuclear lsrDNA and mitochondrial COI sequences) are presented for tapeworms of four species of ranid frogs in North America, including the poorly known Ophiotaenia saphena Osler, 1931 of Rana clamitans Latreille and R. catesbeiana (Shaw), which is redescribed using new material from Arkansas, USA. Tapeworms of R. sphenocephala (Cope) and R. pipiens Schreber, the latter previously identified as O. saphen

Characterization of a novel LTA/LPS-binding antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory temporin peptide from the skin of Fejervary limnocharis (Anura: Ranidae).

Septic shock caused by Gram-positive bacteria continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care units globally. Most Temporins are excellent growth inhibitors of gram-positive bacteria and candidates for developing antimicrobial treatments due to their biological action and small molecular weight. In this study, a novel Temporin peptide from the skin of Fejervarya limnocharis frog, named as Temporin-FL, was characterized. Temporin-FL was found to adopt typical α-helical conformation in SDS solution and to exhibit selective antibacterial activity against Gram-positive b

Molecular and morphological characterization of Rhabdias luzonensis n. sp. (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) from Sanguirana luzonensis (Boulenger, 1896) (Amphibia: Ranidae) from Luzon Island, Philippines.

A lung-dwelling nematode Rhabdias luzonensis n. sp. is described based on 6 specimens collected from the Luzon frog, Sanguirana luzonensis, on Luzon Island, Philippines. The new species is readily distinguishable from congeneric nematodes occurring in eastern and south-eastern Asia by the very distinct structure of the buccal capsule which consists of anterior thick-walled portion and posterior thin-walled portion; both parts are similar in length. Rhabdias luzonensis is the third species of the genus described from Philippines and the first species described from amphibians of this archipelag

Effects of minimum Strigea robusta (Digenea: Strigeidae) cercariae doses and localization of cysts on the anomaly P manifestation in Pelophylax lessonae (Anura: Ranidae) tadpoles.

The anomaly P is a mass morphological anomaly found in some populations of anuran amphibians (water frogs of the genus Pelophylax and toads of the genera Bufo and Bufotes) caused by the parasitic flatworm Strigea robusta. Minimum dose of cercariae for the appearance of the anomaly P remains unknown. However, it is important information for understanding of host population dynamics after invasion and the effects of the parasite on the second intermediate hosts. Herein, the invasion properties of S. robusta in Pelophylax lessonae tadpoles (Anura: Ranidae) and minimum dose for appearance of mild

A new species of Odorrana Fei, Ye & Huang, 1990 (Amphibia, Anura, Ranidae) from central Guangxi, China with a discussion of the taxonomy of Odorrana (Bamburana).

Set1 is the catalytic subunit of SET1C or COMPASS, which methylates histone H3K4 and serves as a scaffold for the association of seven tightly bound polypeptides. We have employed yeast two-hybrid screenings to determine the interactome of Set1 and each subunit, providing a unique resource for exploring known and novel roles of the complex. Our screenings identified a multitude of potential interactors involved in chromatin regulation, DNA replication, meiotic breaks, and Ty transposition, processes previously associated with SET1C. Consistent with Set1 being an RNA-binding protein, the screen

Health status of Pelophylax ridibundus (Amphibia: Ranidae) in a rice paddy ecosystem in Southern Bulgaria and its importance in assessing environmental state: haematological parameters.

Pollution effects on haematological parameters in Pelophylax ridibundus individuals were investigated; animals were collected from two sites in Southern Bulgaria: the Tsalapitsa rice fields (RF) and the Vacha river (reference site, RS). Blood analysis showed significant differences between the haematological parameters of RBC, WBC, Hb, packed cell volume (PCV) and frogs' leucogram from RF and those from RS. These findings provide information on long-term background pollution of the habitat (RF) under investigation. In our view, the erythropenia, leucopenia, hypоchromia, lower values of PCV, St

Host defense peptides from Lithobates forreri, Hylarana luctuosa, and Hylarana signata (Ranidae): phylogenetic relationships inferred from primary structures of ranatuerin-2 and brevinin-2 peptides.

The primary structures of host-defense peptides present in frog skin secretions constitute useful molecular markers for establishing taxonomic classifications and investigating phylogenetic relationships between species within a particular genus. Peptidomic analysis has led to the characterization of multiple host-defense peptides in norepinephrine-stimulated skin secretions of three species of frogs from the family Ranidae: Lithobates forreri (Boulenger, 1883), Hylarana luctuosa (Peters, 1871), and Hylarana signata (Günther, 1872). The L. forreri secretions contain ranatuerin-2 (2 peptides),

Sub-lethal effects induced by a mixture of different pharmaceutical drugs in predicted environmentally relevant concentrations on Lithobates catesbeianus (Shaw, 1802) (Anura, ranidae) tadpoles.

The increasing consumption of medications by humans has negative effects such as the increased disposal of these compounds in the environment. Little is known about how the disposal of a "drug mix" (DM) in aquatic ecosystems can affect their biota. Thus, we evaluated whether the exposure of Lithobates casteibeianus tadpoles to a DM composed of different medication classes (antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, anxiolytic, analgesic, and antacid drugs)-at environmentally relevant concentrations-may change their oral morphology, trigger behavioral disorders, and have mutagenic effects o

Assessment of multiple biomarkers in Lithobates catesbeianus (Anura: Ranidae) tadpoles exposed to zinc oxide nanoparticles and zinc chloride: integrating morphological and behavioral approaches to ecotoxicology.

The ecotoxicological risk to vertebrates posed by zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) is still poorly understood, especially in animals with a biphasic life cycle, which have aquatic and terrestrial phases, such as amphibians. In the present study, we investigated whether acute exposure (7 days) to ZnO NPs and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) at three environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1, 1.0, and 10 mg L-1) induces changes in the morphology, chondrocranium, and behavior of the tadpoles of Lithobates catesbeianus (Anura: Ranidae). Tadpoles exposed to both forms of Zn did not undergo any morphologi

Integrative phylogenetics and geography unveil Quaternary diversification and mitochondrial-nuclear discordance in Odorrana schmackeri sensu lato (Anura, Ranidae): Roles of Qinghai-Tibetan uplift, climate oscillations, and asymmetric gene flow.

Odorrana schmackeri sensu lato, a group of montane stream-dwelling amphibians in southern China, provides an ideal model for deciphering how Cenozoic geological and climatic dynamics drive cryptic diversification. By integrating mitochondrial 12S/16S rRNA sequences from 1,398 samples spanning 107 populations and genome-wide SNP data from 193 individuals across 18 populations, we reconstruct the geographic structure and speciation history of O. schmackeri sensu lato. Our analyses resolved six evolutionarily distinct lineages in O. schmackeri sensu lato, i.e., Odorrana hejiangensis, Odorrana ich

First record of the invasive American tapeworm Ophiotaenia saphena (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) in the Tokyo daruma pond frog Pelophylax porosus porosus in Japan.

Adult proteocephalid tapeworms of the genus Ophiotaenia (Cestoda: Proteocephalidae) were recovered from the endemic Japanese amphibian species, Pelophylax porosus porosus (Amphibia: Ranidae) from Tochigi, Japan. As a result of molecular analyses based on the 28S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I genes, these worms were identified as Ophiotaenia saphena, a species native to North America. Their morphological features were also consistent with those of O. saphena. This species is presumed to have been introduced into Japan with the American bullfrog, Lithobates catesbeianus (Ranid

Skeletal morphogenesis of the vertebral column of the miniature hylid frog Acris crepitans, with comments on anomalies.

Although the vertebral columns of anurans have received much study in the last 150 years, few detailed descriptions exist of the skeletal morphogenesis of this anatomical unit. Herein, the ontogeny of the vertebral skeleton of the hylid frog Acris crepitans is described based on cleared and double-stained specimens, radiographs, and 3D reconstructions generated from synchrotron microCT scans. The adult axial formula is 1-7-1-1, and the vertebral centra are epichordal and procoelous. The neural arches are nonimbricate, and there is a medial articulation between the laminae of Presacrals I and I

Observations on myiasis by the calliphorids, Bufolucilia silvarum and Bufolucilia elongata, in wood frogs, Rana sylvatica, from southeastern Wisconsin.

Larvae of certain species of blowflies (Calliphoridae) can cause myiasis in frogs and toads, but there are few reports from North American amphibians. Of these, most are from toads (bufonids). In this study, we observe primary myiasis in a population of juvenile wood frogs, Rana sylvatica, collected on 22-23 August 2003, from southeastern Wisconsin and compare our observations with previous studies on myiasis from toads. Two (5%) of 39 frogs were infected by the blow fly Bufolucilia silvarum, with an intensity of 28 and 31, whereas 1 (2.5%) of 39 frogs was infected by the blow fly Bufolucilia
