Biochemical and histological effects of feeding thermally oxidized rapeseed oil and lard to rats.

Four groups of weanling rats were fed semisynthetic diets containing 15 percent by weight of dietary fats for 28 days. Two groups received thermally oxidized low-erucic acid rapeseed oil (OLE) or lard (OLA) and the other two groups received the respective fresh fats (FLE, FLA) as controls. Average daily feed consumption and feed efficiency were not affected by either OLE or OLA, however final body weights were depressed by the OLA in the diet. The relative heart weights and heart total lipids were significantly increased in both the OLE and OLA groups. A majority of the animals in both the OLE

Identification and Safety Evaluation of Ochratoxin A Transformation Product in Rapeseed Oil Refining Process.

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is an important mycotoxin detected in edible oil, and it can be effectively removed by classical edible oil refining processes. However, the fate of OTA in the refining process has not been reported. In this study, we systematically tracked the OTA changes during the oil refining process by fortifying 100 μg/kg OTA in crude rapeseed oil. Results showed that about 10.57%, 88.85%, and 0.58% of OTA were removed during the degumming, deacidification, and decolorization processes. Among them, 16.25% OTA was transferred to the byproducts, including 9.85% in degumming wastewater, 5

Laboratory Production of Biofuels and Biochemicals from a Rapeseed Oil through Catalytic Cracking Conversion.

The work is based on a reported study which investigates the processability of canola oil (bio-feed) in the presence of bitumen-derived heavy gas oil (HGO) for production of transportation fuels through a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) route. Cracking experiments are performed with a fully automated reaction unit at a fixed weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 8 hr(-1), 490-530 °C, and catalyst/oil ratios of 4-12 g/g. When a feed is in contact with catalyst in the fluid-bed reactor, cracking takes place generating gaseous, liquid, and solid products. The vapor produced is condensed and colle

Formation of Secondary and Tertiary Volatile Compounds Resulting from the Lipid Oxidation of Rapeseed Oil.

The lipid oxidation of fats and oils leads to volatile organic compounds, having a decisive influence on the sensory quality of foods. To understand formation and degradation pathways and to evaluate the suitability of lipid-derived aldehydes as marker substances for the oxidative status of foods, the formation of secondary and tertiary lipid oxidation compounds was investigated with gas chromatography in rapeseed oils. After 120 min, up to 65 compounds were detected. In addition to secondary degradation products, tertiary products such as alkyl furans, ketones, and aldol condensation products

Pulsed electric field-enhanced phenolic release, profiling, and antioxidant enhancement in cold-pressed rapeseed oil.

Cell-wall sequestration intact Brassica napus seeds severely restricts phenolic recovery during conventional processing, thereby limiting cold-pressed oil quality. Fifteen Yunnan winter accessions were screened for total phenolic content, and the three highest-ranking were selected for pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment and profiling using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS-TQD), antioxidant activity, and oxidative markers. Optimal PEF-treatment (7 kV/cm; 10 Hz; 1 min) enhanced phenolic release and migration, increasing from 308.70 to 1204.52 mg GAE

Bleaching Performance and Mechanism of Al-MCM-41 Tuned by Si/Al in Rapeseed Oil.

Traditional activated clay (AC) bleaching usually shows limited adsorption selectivity, leading to micronutrient loss during pigment removal, and also suffers from high residual oil retention and poor regenerability. Developing mild bleaching materials with both high adsorption efficiency and selectivity is therefore important for oil refining. Mesoporous Al-MCM-41 (AM) adsorbents with different Si/Al ratios were prepared and characterized in pore structure and acidity, and the bleaching performance against AC in terms of pigment removal and the retention of micronutrients in rapeseed oil and

Extraction of Phospholipids From Crude Rapeseed Oil by n-Hexane/Alcohol System: Effects of Solvent Composition on Extraction Performance and Oil Quality.

Rapeseed oil contains endogenous phospholipids (PLs) and other minor bioactive components, but conventional PL extraction methods commonly rely on chloroform-based solvent systems that are unfavorable for green and food-related applications. In this study, n-hexane/methanol and n-hexane/ethanol extraction systems were evaluated as alternatives to the conventional Folch procedure for PL extraction from crude rapeseed oil. The effects of solvent type and water content on degumming performance, PL subclass composition, oil quality, and structural characteristics of the recovered PLs were systemat

[Effect of dietary magnesium levels on cardiac lesions in rats fed a diet rich in rapeseed oil].

Cardiac lesions (histiocyte infiltration and fibrosis) obtained in rats fed rapeseed oil and 3 magnesium levels (high, low and normal) during 30 or 50 days are quantified by their size. Correspondence factorial analysis is used to compare the results. After 30 days, less cardiac lesions of histiocyte infiltration or fibrosis appear with rats fed a diet high in both rapeseed oil and magnesium than with normal or low magnesium diet. After 50 days, cardiopathogenic effects are less severe with normal magnesium diet than with the others (high or low). In both cases, more severe lesions are seen wi

Mortality and production characteristics of laying chickens fed high- and low-erucic acid rapeseed oils.

Laying pullets were fed a diet supplemented with three percent of either high-erucic acid rapeseed (HEAR) oil or low-erucic acid rapeseed (LEAR) oil for 39 weeks. Egg production for the period was 78.8 and 80.1% by the birds fed the respective oils. Average egg weights were 56.8 and 58.7 g. respectively. Gains in body weight, liver weight and adrenal gland weight were similar with the two types of oil fed. Feed consumption was similar for the two groups of birds. The efficiency of utilization of the diet containing HEAR oil was accordingly lower than that of the diet containing LEAR oil. In th

Strain-dependent acute lung injury after intra-tracheal administration of a 'refined' aniline-denatured rapeseed oil: a murine model of the toxic oil syndrome?

Most attempts to reproduce the toxic oil syndrome in animals, either with case-related oils or with refined rapeseed oils, have been unsuccessful. An aniline-denatured rapeseed oil that was subsequently refined according to a protocol yielding relevant markers of "toxic oil" (oil RSO160401) had led to possibly relevant lesions following oral administration in mice. Therefore, in the present study, RSO160401 was subjected to a more extended in vivo testing. To try and maximize the response, BALB/c, DBA/2, A/J, and C57BL/6 mice were administered RSO160401 oil by a single intra-tracheal instillat

Effects of pressing temperature on selenium speciation, volatile profiles, and sensory evaluation in selenium-enriched rapeseed oils.

Pressing temperature strongly influences the nutritional and flavor properties of selenium-enriched rapeseed oils (SROs). In this study, five SROs were obtained at 50-60 °C (CPO), 70-80 °C (LPO), 90-100 °C (MPO), 110-120 °C (SPO), and 140-150 °C (HPO) to evaluate changes in selenium (Se) speciation, volatile profiles, and sensory attributes. The total Se content decreased significantly with increasing temperature, from 428.10 ± 21.69 μg/kg in CPO to 147.64 ± 3.12 μg/kg in HPO. Organic Se species, primarily selenomethionine, selenocystine, and Se-methylselenocysteine, were the dominant forms an

Mitral valve prolapse secondary to right ventricular enlargement in patients with pulmonary hypertension after toxic rapeseed oil ingestion.

A high incidence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) has been reported in various entities which produce important right ventricular (RV) enlargement with normal or decreased left ventricular (LV) volume. To evaluate the importance of RV enlargement in the genesis of MVP in these cases, we analyzed the echocardiographic studies from 176 patients with 'Síndrome Tóxico'. These patients underwent M-mode, cross-sectional and pulsed Doppler examination because of the suspicion of having dietary pulmonary hypertension, a complication which occurred in almost 20% of patients with this epidemic poisoning a

Immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) for biodiesel production from rapeseed oil; evaluation of the effect of immobilization protocol.

The catalytic performance of Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) immobilized on silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles was evaluated for biodiesel production via methanolysis of rapeseed oil. Two different covalent immobilization approaches were compared to assess the effect of immobilization protocols on lipase efficiency. The first approach involved immobilization of CALB on amine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), which targeted the Lys-rich regions of the enzyme. The second used epoxy-functionalized MNPs, enabling broader nucleophilic groups on the enzyme surface to participate in

Mechanisms of deodorizing rapeseed oil with ethanol steam at a low temperature: A focus on free fatty acids, tocopherols, and phytosterols.

Previous studies have demonstrated that deodorization of oil with ethanol steam at a low-temperature (L-ESD) can achieve the same effect in removing harmful substances and preserving micronutrients while better inhibiting the formation of new harmful substances compared to deodorization with water steam at a high-temperature. To elucidate the mechanism of ESD, the kinetics and thermodynamics of ethanol steam deodorized distillate were studied in comparison with those of water steam deodorized distillate. Results revealed their deodorization kinetics and thermodynamic models, and further indica
