Study of mercury-selenium (Hg-Se) interactions and their impact on Hg uptake by the radish (Raphanus sativus) plant.

Pot culture experiments were conducted to study the effects of selenite and selenate treatment (0.5-6.0 microg/ml) on the uptake and translocation of root-absorbed mercury (Hg) in radish plants irrigated with 2 and 5 microg/ml Hg in sand and soil culture. Statistically significant reductions in mercury uptake with increasing concentrations of selenium (Se) were observed. Both forms of selenium (selenite and selenate) were equally effective in reducing the mercury burden of the plant. The observed reduction in plant uptake of mercury is explained by the formation of an HgSe insoluble complex in

Hepatoprotective Effects of Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) on Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Damage via Inhibiting Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis.

Alcohol and drug overdoses cause liver diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and liver cancer globally. In particular, an overdose of acetaminophen (APAP), which is generally used as an analgesic and antipyretic agent, is a major cause of acute hepatitis, and cases of APAP-induced liver damage are steadily increasing. Potential antioxidants may inhibit the generation of free radicals and prevent drug-induced liver damage. Among plant-derived natural materials, radishes (RJ) and turnips (RG) have anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antioxidant properties due to the presence of functional ingred

Role of zinc oxide nanoparticles on phytostabilization efficacy of Raphanus sativus for cadmium polluted soil under microplastic stress.

The accumulation of Cadmium (Cd) and microplastics (MPs) in agricultural soils poses a serious threat to plant growth, crop productivity, and food safety. This study investigates the combined effect of Cd and MPs on growth, antioxidant enzymes, and lipid peroxidation of Raphanus sativus, as well as the potential of Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in alleviating the combined Cd and MPs stress. Seeds were primed with different doses of ZnO NPs (40, 80, and 160 mg L-1). The findings depicted that MPs and Cd significantly reduced the growth attributes and photosynthetic pigments, while increasi

Swine wastewater co-exposed with veterinary antibiotics enhanced the antibiotic resistance of endophytes in radish (Raphanus sativus L.).

The widespread utilization of antibiotics in livestock has promoted the accumulation and diffusion of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in agricultural soils and crops. Here we investigated the mechanisms of antibiotic uptake and accumulation in swine wastewater (SW)-treated radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and subsequent impacts on endophyte antibiotic resistance. Under SW treatments, exposure to 500 μg/L sulfamethazine (SMZ) and enrofloxacin (EFX) significantly affected radish biomass, with SMZ causing 63.0% increases and EFX causing 36.3% decreases relative to the untreated control. Synergistic effect of garbage enzyme and FeSO₄ on iron availability and radish (Raphanus sativus L.) productivity in calcareous soil.

Iron deficiency chlorosis severely limits crop productivity in calcareous soils, while fruit and vegetable waste accumulates globally as an environmental burden. This study investigated whether garbage enzyme (GE), a fermented fruit waste product, can synergistically enhance the efficiency of conventional FeSO4 fertilizer in a calcareous soil (pH 7.9, CaCO3 18.4%). A greenhouse experiment was conducted with radish using a 2 × 3 factorial design: GE at 0 or 3.2% (v/v) and FeSO4.7H2O at 0, 11.2, and 22.3 mg Fe per kg soil. Each treatment had four replicates. Co-application of GE (3.2%) and FeSO4

Cadmium, copper, and lead accumulation and bioconcentration in the vegetative and reproductive organs of Raphanus sativus: implications for plant performance and pollination.

Several studies have found high levels of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) in honey bee hives located near urbanized or industrial areas. Insect herbivores and pollinators may come in contact with environmental contaminants in the leaves and flowers they forage upon in these areas. Our study quantified which of these metals are accumulated in the tissues of a common weedy plant that can serve as a route of exposure for insects. We grew Raphanus sativus (crop radish) in semi-hydroponic sand culture in the greenhouse. Plants were irrigated with nutrient solutions containing Cd, Cu, or Pb

Aqueous Extract of Limnospira platensis Provides Protection Against Microcystin-Induced Oxidative Stress in Hydroponic Culture of Radish (Raphanus sativus).

The eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems often triggers the excessive growth of cyanobacteria, many of which release toxic metabolites such as microcystins (MCs). When irrigation water is contaminated by these compounds, adverse consequences may arise for plants as well as for animal and human health. In contrast, certain non-toxic cyanobacterial species like Limnospira platensis are increasingly regarded as valuable tools for sustainable agriculture, given their ability to enhance plant nutrition, growth, yield, and stress tolerance while also mitigating the detrimental impacts of MCs. The pr

Co-identification of candidate regions associated with ovule number per ovary through QTL analysis and GWAS in Raphanus sativus L.

Ovule number per ovary (ONPO) directly determines seed quantity in plants. In this study, two radish (Raphanus sativus L.) accessions exhibiting marked phenotypic variation in ONPO and seed number per pod (SNPP) were selected to generate bi-parental populations for quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis. Additionally, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on ONPO using 206 radish accessions were conducted. Through an integrated analysis of QTL mapping and GWAS results, a major common QTL was identified spanning a 0.6 Mb region on the terminal of chromosome 5. Based on genomic position, gene

Chemical Characterization, Network Pharmacology, Molecular Docking, and Comparative Anti-Colitic Activity of Polar and Nonpolar Fractions From Raphanus Sativus L. Seeds.

The bioactive material basis of Raphanus sativus L. seeds (Raphani Semen) against ulcerative colitis (UC) remains unclear. This study compared the chemical profiles and anti-colitic efficacy of its nonpolar volatile oil (RSO) and polar ethanol extract (RSEE). Chemical profiling using GC-MS and UPLC-MS/MS revealed RSO was dominated by phytosterols, whereas RSEE was enriched in phenolic alkaloids, particularly sinapine. In a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced murine colitis model, RSEE demonstrated superior efficacy in reducing disease activity and restoring mucosal barriers compared to RSO. B

Fermented black radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. niger) attenuates methionine and choline deficient diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in mice.

As one of the wide-ranging form of chronic liver disease, there are only limited therapeutic options for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We evaluated whether fermented black radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. niger; FBR) ameliorates lipid accumulation, inflammation, and hepatic fibrosis, which are characteristics of the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Fermented black radish treatment reduced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, which appeared to be associated with the downregulation of adipogenic transcription factors, including sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c, CCAAT/enhancer-b

Leaves of Raphanus sativus L. Shows Anti-Inflammatory Activity in LPS-Stimulated Macrophages via Suppression of COX-2 and iNOS Expression.

Raphanus sativus L. (RS) is a cruciferous vegetable that is widely consumed in Korea. The anticancer activity of leaves of RS (RSL) extract has been investigated; however, no studies focused on its anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of RSL extract. In brief, RSL powder was fractionated into n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water-soluble fractions. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells were treated with each fraction for initial screening. It was found that the chloroform fraction signi
