In the present study we examined the influence of arginine vasopressin (AVP) on conditioned freezing behavior to aversive shock treatment by comparing the responses of Brattleboro homozygous (DI) rats, Brattleboro heterozygous (HZ) rats, and Long-Evans (LE) rats. Brattleboro rats were housed singly in metabolic cages and continuously infused with saline. Timed urine collections were analyzed for Na+ and K+; oxytocin (OT)-like material was estimated by RIA. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) was measured by radioimmunoassay in atrial and plasma extracts from normal Long-Evans (LE) rats and Brattleboro-strain diabetes insipidus (DI) rats. Plasma renin activity (PRA) was measured in conscious Brattleboro strain, vasopressin (AVP)-deficient diabetes insipidus (DI) and heterozygous rats with the aid of chronically implanted catheters. In the Brattleboro strain of rats, the genetic defect in vasopressin synthesis seems to be accompanied by a defect in the synthesis of other structurally related nonapeptides, such as the pineal arginine vasotocin which has antigonadotropic properties in animals.
