The patterns of expression of the human-tumor-associated antigens, CO17-1A, GA73-3, BR55-2, GICA19-9, CA50 and carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) were studied in the normal colonic mucosa (the last three also in the serum) of Sprague-Dawley rats. To assess the toxicological and pharmacological effects of chemicals, it is important to know what kinds of neoplasms naturally occur in the early life of laboratory animals. The subchronic toxicity of sodium tungstate dihydrate aqueous solution in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats was evaluated by daily oral gavage of 0, 10, 75, 125, or 200 mg/kg/d for 90 days. Measured parameters included food consumption, body weight measurements, hematology, clinical chemistry, and histopathological changes. There was a significant decrease in food consumption and body weight gain in males at 200 mg/kg/d from days 77 to 90; however, there was no effect in food consumption and body weights in females. There were no changes in the hematological and clinical parameters studied.

We investigated the age-related changes in reproductive function in female rats of the Crl:CD(SD) strain. The estrous cycles were monitored from 6 to 42 weeks of age. Fresh leaves and bracts of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) were fed to 46 Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were observed for 1 week for changes in weight or behavior. The animals were then sacrificed in ether and examined for changes in thyroid and adrenal weights. One group was also examined for damage to the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. No lesions or other signs of intestinal damage were observed. None of the groups showed any change in behavior or any significant change in body weight or adrenal weight.
