Cyberpsychology & behavior : the impact of the Internet, multimedia and virtual reality on behavior and society2001eng
The success rate for treating phobias with in vivo exposure is high. Unfortunately, few phobics (less than 15-20%) ever seek treatment. Virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy is also proving to be highly effective. The present surveys assessed 162 students high in fear of spiders. In Study 1, when asked to choose between multisession in vivo exposure vs. multisession VR exposure therapy, 81% chose VR. In Study 2, comparing one-session in vivo versus multisession VR exposure therapy, 89% chose VR. Results suggest that VR exposure therapy may prove valuable for increasing the number of phobics wh

A growing body of literature suggests that virtual reality is a successful tool for exposure therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Virtual reality (VR) researchers posit the construct of presence, defined as the interpretation of an artificial stimulus as if it were real, to be a presumed factor that enables anxiety to be felt during virtual reality exposure therapy (VRE). However, a handful of empirical studies on the relation between presence and anxiety in VRE have yielded mixed findings. The current study tested the following hypotheses about the relation between presence and anxi

Virtual reality (VR) has become an interesting alternative for the treatment of social phobia. This scoping review explored the impact of VR technologies in the treatment of social phobia (25 papers were included). Treatment approaches to social phobia included virtual reality exposure therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, exposure group therapy, in vivo exposure therapy, and waiting list. VR was identified as the most successful approach, not only in improving social phobia, but also resulting in real life changes such as improvement in occupational success. VR Head Mounted Displays were used

The AVATAR therapy is a computer-based intervention which aims to reduce the frequency and severity of voices. The approach is based on computer technology which enables each patient to create an avatar of the entity (human or non-human) that they believe is talking to them. The therapist promotes a dialogue between the patient and the avatar in which the avatar progressively comes under the patient's control. Using real-time voice conversion delivery software, the therapist can modify the relationship between the patient and his/her voice. The innovation of this new intervention is discussed

The use of a multicomponent cognitive-behavioral treatment strategy for panic disorder with agoraphobia is actually one of the preferred therapeutical approach for this disturbance. This method involves a mixture of cognitive and behavioral techniques which are intended to help patients identify and modify their dysfunctional anxiety-related thoughts, beliefs and behavior. Emphasis is placed on reversing the maintaining factors identified in the cognitive and behavioral patterns. The treatment protocol includes exposure to the feared situation, interoceptive exposure and cognitive restructurin

Gene therapy is gradually becoming a mainstream treatment modality and is no longer the preserve of large university departments whose laboratories master nucleic acid analytical procedures and whose clinical teams manage its administration. It was originally designed for genetic diseases that, because of their prevalence, were a group known as rare diseases. Gene therapy has so far been applied in children to act before the disease development. These new treatments have also begun to be applied for common diseases such as metabolic disorders (e. g. diabetes) and even for those that are increa

Heroin addiction causes damage to physical and psychological health and can have serious social consequences. For people with addictive disorders, maintaining abstinence is a major difficulty. The stimuli that trigger cravings and urges are present in everyday life. For example, the presence of the substance, its smell, a stressful situation or a negative or positive emotion can trigger a strong urge for substance use. Craving can contribute to relapse episodes. Virtual reality exposure therapy (VET) may train people to cope differently when facing such triggers. This article presents a synthe

The study describes a therapeutic approach using psycho-dynamic psychotherapy integrating virtual environment (VE) for resolving impotence or better erectile dysfunction (ED) of presumably psychological or mixed origin and premature ejaculation (PE). The plan for therapy consists of 12 sessions (15 if a sexual partner was involved) over a 25-week period on the ontogenetic development of male sexual identity, and the methods involved the use of a laptop PC, joystick, Virtual Reality (VR) helmet with miniature television screen showing a new specially-designed CD-ROM programs using Virtools with

Virtual reality involves the creation of an interactive three-dimensional virtual world which the user can navigate. This technology is proposed for anxiety disorders as an alternative to the in vivo and imaginative exposure provided in cognitive behavioral therapy, the gold standard psychoterapeutic treatment for this pathology. According to a signifcant number of publications including meta-analysis, virtual reality therapy exposure is at least equivalent to in vivo exposure in specifc phobias, panic disorder with agoraphobia, post-traumatic stress disorder and social phobia. A fundamental f

Applying my experience in microbial genetics, especially in the genetic transformation/transduction of Bacilus subtilis bacteria, I decided around 1956 to develop a similar system for eukaryotic, especially human cell cultures. I believed it would permit the development of clinical applications for replacing defective genes to treat or cure some of the genetic diseases.

Continuing medical education has historically been provided primarily by didactic lectures, though adult learners prefer experiential or self-directed learning. Young physicians have extensive experience with computer-based or "video" games, priming them for medical education--and treating their patients--via new technologies. We report our use of standardized patients (SPs) to educate physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of biological and chemical warfare agent exposure. We trained professional actors to serve as SPs representing exposure to biological agents such as anthrax and smallpox

AIM: The goal of this study was to determine the level of satisfaction of geriatric patients with their pain therapy, their wishes for improved treatment, and possible influencing factors.
METHODS: From April to November 2002, all patients able to communicate ( n=1432) were included in the study if they had reported pain in the previous 7 days or were taking regular analgesic medication without specifying pain.
RESULTS: Of the geriatric patients reporting from home, 36.4% were not satisfied with their pain therapy up to that time, and 25.4% of surgical patients were dissatisfied as were 28.5

The goals of this study were twofold: (1) to investigate nonphobics' and phobics' physiological response in virtual environments, and (2) to analyze the trend of phobics' physiology during virtual reality (VR) treatment. As a measure of physiology, heart rate, skin resistance, and skin temperature were acquired. The data for two groups of participants were analyzed: 22 nonphobic participants (mean = 32 +/- 9.4 years) and 36 subjects with fear of flying (mean = 40 +/- 12.1 years) who met the DSM-IV criteria for fear of flying. As a result, skin resistance showed significant differences between

The focus of this chapter is an overview of integrating virtual reality (VR) technology within the context of exposure therapy for anxiety disorders, a gold standard treatment, with a focus on how VR can help facilitate extinction learning processes integral to these interventions. The chapter will include an overview of advantages of incorporating VR within exposure therapy, and benefits specifically within an inhibitory learning approach for extinction training. A review of the empirical literature on the effectiveness of VR exposure therapy for specific phobia and PTSD will be provided, as

Gene therapy encompasses the administration of biological medicinal products containing recombinant nucleic acids, mainly DNA, with the aim of treating or curing diseases. This represents a unique therapeutic strategy to reach the brain, in order to prevent or halt a neurodegenerative process. During the past decade, active multidisciplinary research has started to solve many issues for gene therapy in neurodegenerative disorders in terms of vectors, modes of administration, and expression of the therapeutic DNA. The engineering of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) with lentivirus vectors for ex

Both the improvement of pathophysiological knowledge of major fetal anomalies and the development of therapeutic tools have allowed in some specific cases in utero therapy by foetoscopy. We discuss the state of art and recent advances for four major anomalies: twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, myelomeningocele and lower urinary tract obstruction. Fetoscopic laser surgery for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome has become the gold standard for treatment of TTS. In terms of fetal surgery, severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia and myelomeningocele are the two main

Magnetic trackers are widely used position/orientation measurement devices in interactive computer systems. These trackers output six-degree-of-freedom position and orientation of their receiver coordinates with respect to their transmitter coordinates. It is a potential solution for real-time position/orientation measurement in an augmented reality system for therapy (ART). However, an obstruction to be overcome is that a magnetic tracker is vulnerable to measurement inaccuracy caused by magnetic field distortions (including ferric and non-ferric distortions) when it is used in metallic envir
