BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a multifactorial, pregnancy-related disorder characterized by new-onset hypertension and proteinuria, with distinct early- and late-onset forms. Although complement dysregulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia, its causal role remains unclear. In mice, Crry (complement receptor 1-related protein Y) functions as a critical complement regulator at the fetal-maternal interface. Because complete Crry deficiency is embryonically lethal, direct in vivo investigation of complement activation in pregnancy has been challenging.

Human serum-treated Raji and Daudi cells were shown to bind C3 fragments on their surface as a consequence of their capacity to activate C via the alternative pathway. We have studied the expression of the C3b receptor (CR1) on erythrocytes of 55 patients with Hansen's disease. We developed a radioimmunoassay utilizing a monoclonal antibody that recognized an epitope different from the C3b binding site, which therefore enabled us to measure total number of CR1 regardless of receptor occupancy. Tetracyclines, particularly doxycycline, have adverse effects on granulocyte function in vitro. We have examined the effects of doxycycline on membrane receptors for IgG (Fc gamma-R) and C3b (C3b-R) on granulocytes and lymphocytes, as well as on the sheep erythrocyte receptor (E-R) on T lymphocytes. The follicular dendritic cell sarcoma/tumor is a neoplasic proliferation of fusiform and ovoid cells with characteristic morphology and immunohistochemical pattern. The sarcoma/tumor term is designated due to the variability of the cytological status and, in many cases, its indeterminate clinical course. This report presents the 2 first cases seen at the Hospital General de México, OD (General Hospital of Mexico). The aim of this study is to contribute to the morphology and immunophenotype of this infrequent neoplasm, as well as discuss its differential diagnosis and clinical evolution.

Neutrophil function in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) was studied by means of a kinetic particle uptake assay using IgG-coated and IgG + C3b-coated latex particles, enabling a differentiation between Fc and C3b receptor-mediated phagocytosis.
