Application of nutrient essentiality criteria to dietary carbohydrates.

The purpose of the present review is to describe how human physiology at very low carbohydrate intakes relates to the criteria for nutritional essentiality. Although we did not limit ourselves to one particular type or function of carbohydrates, we did primarily focus on glucose utilisation as that function was used to determine the recommended daily allowance. In the general population, the human body is able to endogenously synthesise carbohydrates, and does not show signs of deficiency in the absence of dietary carbohydrates. However, in certain genetic defects, such as glycogen storage dis

Magnesium: Biochemistry, Nutrition, Detection, and Social Impact of Diseases Linked to Its Deficiency.

Magnesium plays an important role in many physiological functions. Habitually low intakes of magnesium and in general the deficiency of this micronutrient induce changes in biochemical pathways that can increase the risk of illness and, in particular, chronic degenerative diseases. The assessment of magnesium status is consequently of great importance, however, its evaluation is difficult. The measurement of serum magnesium concentration is the most commonly used and readily available method for assessing magnesium status, even if serum levels have no reliable correlation with total body magne

Calcium--osteoporosis and blood pressure.

Calcium is the main essential mineral for building strong bones and sound teeth. Bone remodeling occurs throughout life; new bone is deposited and existing bone is replaced. Peak bone mass development is obtained up to 35 yr of age after which bone resorption is increased. It is therefore imperative that Ca intake meet the recommended dietary allowances not only during the growing period but throughout life. Milk and dairy products are the major food source of Ca in the US diet, supplying about 61% of our intake while other food groups supply the rest. It is almost impossible to supply the rec

Global Dietary Magnesium Deficiency: Prevalence, Underlying Causes, Health Consequences, and Strategic Solutions.

Magnesium is an essential mineral required for energy metabolism, glucose regulation, cardiovascular function, bone integrity, and neural activity. Despite the vital physiological roles of magnesium, , dietary magnesium deficiency remains a widespread and underrecognized global public health concern. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for adults in the United States is approximately 420 mg/day for men and 320 mg/day for women, yet large proportions of the population fail to meet these levels with national nutrition surveys consistently documenting inadequate intake. For instance, 64.4% of

Vitamin K2 Needs an RDI Separate from Vitamin K1.

Vitamin K and its essential role in coagulation (vitamin K [Koagulation]) have been well established and accepted the world over. Many countries have a Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for vitamin K based on early research, and its necessary role in the activation of vitamin K-dependent coagulation proteins is known. In the past few decades, the role of vitamin K-dependent proteins in processes beyond coagulation has been discovered. Various isoforms of vitamin K have been identified, and vitamin K2 specifically has been highlighted for its long half-life and extrahepatic activity, whereas the d

The question is whether intake of folic acid from diet alone during pregnancy is sufficient.

UNLABELLED: PREGNANCY AND FOLIC ACID: Pregnancy is the most important period in life of every woman, partially for the number of physiological adaptations she is going through, partially for the expectance of new life. In addition, pregnancy is the "critical window" for development later in childhood, as a period of foetal programming during which nutrition plays one of crucial roles. Despite the general belief that nutrition through pregnancy is adequate and characterized by better nutritional habits, a number of studies do not corroborate this belief. ROLE OF FOLIC ACID: An adequate folate b

General Dietary Recommendations for People with Down Syndrome.

Down syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21 and is associated with characteristic features of appearance, intellectual impairment to varying degrees, organ defects, and health problems typical of this syndrome. Studies on the frequency of consumption of food products in this group show many irregularities, in particular too low consumption of vegetables and fruits, wholegrain cereal products and dairy products, and excessive consumption of meat products and sweets. It is necessary to correct eating habits. The diets of people with trisomy 21 should be consistent with the recommend

Implementation of Dietary Reference Intake Standards in Prison Menus in Poland.

Adequate nutrition in prisons should constantly be monitored due to the limited possibilities of external control as well as the low catering budget for prison meals and poorly defined requirements in this regard. The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional value of meals served in Polish prisons. Using a computer program, 14-day regular and bland diets from 30 prisons were analyzed. The energy value of the meals and the percentage of energy provided by protein, fat, and carbohydrate contained therein were found to meet the recommendations of the Polish National Food and Nutrition Insti

Global Perspectives on China's Iodine Dietary Reference Intakes: Revisions, Public Health Implications, and Future Strategies.

Iodine is an essential trace element for the human body and a fundamental precursor for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, playing a critical role in maintaining thyroid function. Since iodine cannot be synthesized by the body, it must be obtained from external sources. The development of dietary reference intakes for iodine has evolved over time, with various countries establishing guidelines based on local dietary surveys, iodine status assessments, and health outcomes. The dietary reference intakes of iodine vary widely across different regions due to differences in dietary habits, food for

Perspective: Protein Requirements and Optimal Intakes in Aging: Are We Ready to Recommend More Than the Recommended Daily Allowance?

The Dietary Reference Intakes set the protein RDA for persons >19 y of age at 0.8 g protein ⋅ kg body weight-1 ⋅ d-1. A growing body of evidence suggests, however, that the protein RDA may be inadequate for older individuals. The evidence for recommending a protein intake greater than the RDA comes from a variety of metabolic approaches. Methodologies centered on skeletal muscle are of paramount importance given the age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass and function (sarcopenia) and the degree to which dietary protein could mitigate these declines. In addition to evidence from short-term

Chronic magnesium deficiency and human disease; time for reappraisal?

Numerous epidemiological, experimental and clinical studies over the last 30 years have consistently shown that chronic magnesium deficiency is associated with and/or exacerbates a number of major disorders (Table 1). Yet chronic magnesium deficiency is not widely recognized and a major reason for this failure is that serum magnesium levels do not accurately reflect body magnesium stores. Specifically, in chronic magnesium deficiency, serum magnesium levels are often within the normal reference range (usually lowest quartile) and may not progress to overt hypomagnesaemia. This raises serious q

International variability in diet and requirements of manganese: Causes and consequences.

Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element that is critical for human health and development. At the turn of the century when diets were based on whole grains, cereals and other traditional foods, Mn intakes (8-9mg/d) were much greater than that prevalent today (2mg/d). As societies have developed, diets have shifted as part of a nutrition transition, to those that are high in processed foods, fat, and sugar. These foods are virtually devoid of Mn. Thus, dietary Mn has declined substantially throughout the world, as confirmed by several wide-scale, total diet studies. International variabili

Dietary Protein Intake Recommendations for Patients with Non-Dialysis-Dependent CKD: What Should Healthcare Providers Do?

Protein intake is crucial to maintain human health, and an adequate quantity and quality of dietary protein intake (DPI) is particularly important in patients with CKD. Both an insufficient amount of DPI ( i.e ., <0.6 g/kg body weight (body wt)/d) and an excess amount of DPI ( i.e ., >1.3 g/kg body wt/d) pose potential health hazards in patients with CKD stages 3-5. Therefore, to optimize patient outcomes, healthcare providers should be familiar with the effects of both inadequate and excessive DPI in this population. The Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative guidelines on DPI are rooted i

Nutrition Recommendations for People Living After Cancer: A Systematic Review and Critical Appraisal of Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Background/Objectives: Clinical practice guidelines are essential tools for ensuring evidence-based, standardised care for people living after cancer; however, the quality of international clinical practice guidelines with nutrition recommendations for this population has not been assessed. This systematic review aimed to critically appraise the quality of international clinical practice guidelines for the nutritional care of people living after cancer and to summarise common recommendations for both the overall condition and for breast, colorectal, prostate, and head and neck cancers. Copper Deficiency: Causes, Manifestations, and Treatment.

BACKGROUND: The metabolism of the essential trace element copper remains incompletely understood and, until recently, nearly ignored in acute medicine. Menkes disease was for long the only known copper deficiency condition, but several case reports and investigations conducted over the last 2 decades have shown that deficiency is more frequent than previously suspected, with devastating individual consequences and potential public health consequences. The copper needs in healthy individuals are 0.9 mg/d, which translates to 0.3 mg/d intravenously in parenteral nutrition; the present review aim

The Problematic Use of Dietary Reference Intakes to Assess Magnesium Status and Clinical Importance.

Determination of the public health concern about magnesium (Mg) in health and disease has been confounded by the lack of a practical measure of status. This has resulted in a lack of consistency in associating Mg deficiency with specific pathological conditions. Some attempts at associating Mg with a chronic disease have used the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) as a status assessment measure. Use of current DRIs for Mg is problematic because recent evidence suggests that they should be updated and based on body weight. An evidence-based suggested Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) and Recomm
