Contralateral recovery of cochlear function after cochlear implantation.

Significant recovery of sensorineural hearing loss in either ear after cochlear implantation (CI) is rare. We present the case of a 57-year-old lady with medically treated depression and a background of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) in the non-implanted ear, who clearly fulfilled audiological criteria for CI. Two years post-implantation her CSOM in the non-implanted ear was addressed with blind sac closure of the ear. Post-operatively the hearing thresholds in this ear had improved to the extent that a bone-anchored hearing aid became a viable option. The literature is carefully revi

Cortical recovery of swallowing function in wound botulism.

BACKGROUND: Botulism is a rare disease caused by intoxication leading to muscle weakness and rapidly progressive dysphagia. With adequate therapy signs of recovery can be observed within several days. In the last few years, brain imaging studies carried out in healthy subjects showed activation of the sensorimotor cortex and the insula during volitional swallowing. However, little is known about cortical changes and compensation mechanisms accompanying swallowing pathology. METHODS: In this study, we applied whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) in order to study changes in cortical activat

Recovery of sexual function after scrotal hernia repair.

BACKGROUND: Most of the patients with scrotal hernia have sexual dysfunction to some extent. Therefore, we investigated the recovery of sexual function after scrotal hernia repair by using an internationally approved, patient-administered questionnaire. METHODS: In a prospective follow-up study, 34 patients with scrotal hernia were investigated to assess sexual function before and 3 months after hernia repair by using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire. The mean scores obtained on pre- and postoperative visits for all domains of sexual function were analyzed and

Recovery of impaired muscle function in severe sciatica.

This is a prospective cohort study of patients with acute treated severe sciatica. The objectives of the study are, firstly, to describe the recovery of muscle performance by manual and isokinetic muscle testing in patients with acute severe sciatica over 1 year, and secondly, to discuss the potential clinical relevance of the isokinetic testing of the ankle for patients with acute sciatica. In clinical daily practice, muscle performance is evaluated by means of isometric manual tests. Different authors using manual muscle tests have reported the long-term outcome of the muscle function in pat

Recovery of the vestibular function after vestibular neuronitis.

We performed steroid therapy on 34 cases with vestibular neuronitis and compared them with 77 patients not subjected to this therapy to examine the role of recovery of their vestibular function. Since no relation was noted between use of steroid and changes in subjective symptom of dizziness, the use of steroid is likely to facilitate the disappearance of spontaneous nystagmus in the early recovery stage. Canal paralysis recovered significantly by steroid and in cases of slight and moderate paralysis at the onset, recovery was more significant. Steroid therapy is argued to be effective for the

Recovery of function after brain injury in man.

Late after-effects of cerebral trauma are difficult to study because patients tend to be seen for persisting symptoms, and not simply for their lesions. We have tried to avoid this bias by recalling periodically, over the years, 520 men with known brain injuries incurred in World War II or in Korea or Vietnam. These men are seen irrespective of clinical need and all undergo intensive behavioural and neurological assessment, which still continues. For such groups, recovery is impressive, though one third shows persistent intellectual loss. In addition, some tasks reveal specific deficits enduri

Recovery of kidney function after cessation of graft function or prolonged dialysis treatment.

The occurrence of recovery of kidney function after cessation of graft function or prolonged dialysis treatment has been studied retrospectively, and the frequency was found to be roughly 1%, inasmuch as 8 of approximately 750 patients could dispense with dialysis after 10-131 weeks of treatment. The causes of recovery of kidney function are discussed, as the importance of keeping this possibility in mind.

Recovery Takes Time: Loss of Signal Predicts Delayed Recovery of Vocal Cord Function After Thyroidectomy.

Background: Post-thyroidectomy vocal cord dysfunction (PT-VCD) is an important side effect of thyroid surgery. With the introduction of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM), hopes have been raised that either the rate or severity of PT-VCD could be reduced. However, data to support these concepts are scarce. To better understand the relationship between IONM outcomes and the severity of PT-VCD, a detailed time-course evaluation of recovery of PT-VCD was performed in a continuous clinical quality registry from a specialized high-volume endocrine surgery center. Methods: Data were prospectively

[Functional recovery in subtotal laryngectomies].

Subtotal laryngectomy, a valid treatment for carefully selected patients, is a safe oncologic procedure which preserves the cricoid-arytenoid unit creating a successful "neo-larynx" with valid phonatory and deglutition functions. At the E.N.T. Clinic of "La Sapienza" University of Rome from Jan. 1984 to Feb. 1992, 85 subjects underwent subtotal laryngectomy, 50 of which then underwent phoniatric examination. The remaining patients were not suitable candidates because of the trachealis cannula (14), or because they were lost at follow up (16). A total of 50 male subjects were examined. Twenty-e

Recovery of peripheral chemoreceptor function after denervation in ponies.

Resting ventilation (PaCO2) and ventilatory responses to acute hypoxia and to intravenous NaCN were assessed over a 4-yr period following cutting of the carotid sinus nerves and stripping the adventitia of the aortic arch. The data indicated essentially complete loss of peripheral chemoreceptor function immediately after surgery and hypoventilation during normoxia (delta PaCO2 = +8.7 Torr). There was a time-dependent, partial recovery of peripheral chemoreceptor function between 2 and 22 mo after surgery. Approximately 10% of the ventilatory response to iv NaCN returned, and 30-40% of the norm

Recovery of endocrine function after islet and pancreas transplantation.

Long-standing type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with an absolute loss of endogenous insulin secretion (circulating C-peptide is undetectable) and a related defect in glucose counter-regulation that is often complicated by hypoglycemia unawareness, markedly increasing the risk for severe hypoglycemia. Both the transplantation of isolated islets and a whole pancreas can restore β-cell secretory capacity, improve glucose counter-regulation, and return hypoglycemia awareness, thus alleviating severe hypoglycemia. The transplantation of islets may require more than one donor pancreas, and the rec

Recovery of renal function in patients receiving haemodialysis treatment.

The aim of this study was to review all cases of recovery of renal function in chronic haemodialysis patients, observed in the last ten years. During the study period, 218 chronic renal failure patients were managed on haemodialysis for a minimum of 90 days. In 17 cases (8%), it was possible to interrupt dialysis after 95 to 529 days. The probability of renal function recovery was higher in patients with chronic interstitial nephritis (P=.04) or autoimmune diseases (P=.07), as well as in those starting haemodialysis treatment at a frequency of two sessions per week (P=.02). No significant diff

Angiogenesis, neurogenesis and brain recovery of function following injury.

Stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are major causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Unfortunately, almost all phase III clinical trials of neuroprotective agents for stroke and TBI have demonstrated no benefit, raising concerns regarding the use of neuroprotective strategies alone as therapy for acute brain injuries. Therefore, a compelling need exists to develop treatments that promote both the repair and regeneration of injured brain tissue, and functional recovery. Recent data suggest that strategies to enhance neurogenesis and angiogenesis following brain injuries may provide pr

Recovery from hip fracture in eight areas of function.

BACKGROUND: This report describes changes in eight areas of functioning after a hip fracture, identifies the point at which maximal levels of recovery are reached in each area, and evaluates the sequence of recuperation across multiple functional domains. METHODS. Community-residing hip fracture patients (n = 674) admitted to eight hospitals in Baltimore, Maryland, 1990-1991 were followed prospectively for 2 years from the time of hospitalization. Eight areas of function (i.e., upper and lower extremity physical and instrumental activities of daily living; gait and balance; social, cognitive,

Recovery of olfactory function after an anterior craniofacial approach.

We assessed recovery of olfactory function in five consecutive patients who underwent surgical resection of midline skull base tumors using an anterior craniofacial approach in which the cribriform plate was mobilized with the dura. Olfactory function was evaluated before and after surgery using an intravenous olfactory test with prosultiamine and also a standard olfactory acuity test. Before surgery, one patient showed anosmia attributable to obstruction of the nasal cavity and olfactory cleft, and four patients showed normal olfactory function. After surgery, one patient was irreversibly ano

Steps toward recovery of function after hemilabyrinthectomy in frogs.

Removal of the labyrinthine organs on one side results in a number of severe postural and dynamic reflex deficits. Over time some of these behavioral deficits normalize again. At a chronic stage the brain of frogs exhibits a number of changes in vestibular and propriospinal circuits on the operated side that were studied in vitro. The onset of changes in the vestibular nuclear complex was delayed, became evident only after head posture had recovered by more than 50%, and was independent of the presence or absence of a degeneration of vestibular nerve afferent fibers. The time course of changes
