Cortical Cataract and Refractive Error.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between the presence of cortical cataract and accommodation effort, using refractive error as a proxy. METHODS: Patients between 50 and 90 years, scheduled for cataract surgery, were selected with the help of a photographic database. Nuclear and cortical cataract were graded and patients grouped having no cataract, pure cortical, mixed or pure nuclear cataract. Refraction data at the time of the photograph was converted to estimated spherical equivalent refractive error each patient would have had at the age of 45 years. RESULTS: From the initial 239 eye

[Refractive error and amblyopia in children].

The refractive status of 3,099 children was analyzed. The result showed that the incidence and degree of hyperopia decreased gradually and those of myopia increased along with the growing up of children in ametropia. In binocular refractive amblyopia, high and medium hyperopia and myopia in severe and medium amblyopia were significantly more than those in mild amblyopia. In monocular refractive amblyopia, high and medium hyperopia and high myopia in the amblyopic eyes were more than those in the nonamblyopic eyes. The refractive status of binocular esotropic amblyopia had no significant differ

Mechanisms of accommodation and refractive error.

The classical or Helmholtz theory of accommodation has formed the basis of optometric practice for many years. This theory maintains that the ciliary muscle receives only parasympathetic innervation and that the position of rest in the emmetropic eye lies at optical infinity. The suggestion of a dual sympathetic/parasympathetic innervation to the ciliary muscle also dates from the last century. Recent studies indicate that the "dark focus" or resting point of accommodation lies at some intermediate distance and that the refractive state in the absence of an adequate stimulus represents the ton

[Epikeratophakia surgery for refractive errors and keratoconus].

Epikeratophakia surgery is a relatively new surgical technique which involves suturing of prelathed corneal tissue on top of the recipient's cornea. The epikeratophakia lens is lathed according to the recipient's refractive needs and therefore can correct myopia and hyperopia; a plano lenticle can be used to correct keratoconus. In the past 3 years we operated on 25 patients (27 eyes). There were 11 cases of myopia, 7 of aphakia and 7 of keratoconus. The aphakic (hyperopic) group included patients with aphakia and traumatic aphakia in whom secondary implantation of an intraocular lens was cont

Prevalence of refractive errors in Tibetan adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of adolescent eye disease in remote areas of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has rarely been reported. To understand the prevalence of common eye diseases in Tibet, we performed ocular-disease screening on students from primary and secondary schools in Tibet, and compared the prevalence to that in the Central China Plain (referred to here as the "plains area"). METHODS: The refractive status of students was evaluated with a Spot™ vision screener. The test was conducted three or fewer times for both eyes of each student and results with best correction were recorded. RESU

Refractive enhancements for residual refractive error after cataract surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Advances in cataract surgery have allowed surgeons to achieve superior refractive outcomes but have also led to higher patient expectations. Despite ever-evolving technology, residual refractive errors still occur. Postcataract refractive enhancements may be required to deliver satisfactory visual outcomes. This review aims to discuss the potential causes of residual refractive errors and the various enhancement modalities to correct them. RECENT FINDINGS: A thorough preoperative workup to detect and address underlying pathologic causes of impaired vision should be performe
