Refugia, climatic conditions and farm management factors as drivers of adaptation in Nematodirus battus populations.

Parasites are known for their ability to rapidly adapt to changing conditions. For parasitic helminths, changes in climate, along with farming and management practices associated with the intensification of livestock farming, provide novel challenges which can impact on their epidemiology and control. The sustainability of livestock production partially relies on effective control of helminth infection. Therefore, understanding changes in parasite behaviour, and what drives these, is of great importance. Nematodirus battus is an economically important helminth in the UK and temperate regions.

Distribution and predicted climatic refugia for a reef-building cold-water coral on the southeast US margin.

Climate change is reorganizing the planet's biodiversity, necessitating proactive management of species and habitats based on spatiotemporal predictions of distributions across climate scenarios. In marine settings, climatic changes will predominantly manifest via warming, ocean acidification, deoxygenation, and changes in hydrodynamics. Lophelia pertusa, the main reef-forming coral present throughout the deep Atlantic Ocean (>200 m), is particularly sensitive to such stressors with stark reductions in suitable habitat predicted to accrue by 2100 in a business-as-usual scenario. However, with

Comparative Phylogeography of West African Rainforest Frogs Reveals Regional Variation in Refugia Dynamics.

Understanding how species responded to climatic change in the past can help predict the long-term implications of contemporary climate change. The Upper Guinean rainforests of West Africa are a global biodiversity hotspot, and it is well documented that climatic fluctuations in the Pleistocene drove the expansion and contraction of rainforest cover in this region. West African slippery frogs, genus Conraua, are rainforest specialists and present an excellent opportunity to study the effects of climate-driven landscape changes on contemporary phylogeographic patterns and population dynamics. Managing anthelmintic resistance in cyathostomin parasites: Investigating the benefits of refugia-based strategies.

Selective anthelmintic therapy has been recommended as a sustainable strategy for cyathostomin control in horse populations for several decades. The traditional approach has been to determine strongyle fecal egg counts (FEC) for all horses, with treatment only recommended for those exceeding a predetermined threshold. The aims are to achieve a reduction of overall egg shedding, while leaving a proportion of the herd untreated, which lowers anthelmintic treatment intensity and reduces selection pressure for development of anthelmintic resistance. This study made use of the cyathostomin model to

Complex postglacial history of the temperate bark beetle Tomicus piniperda L. (Coleoptera, Scolytinae).

Tomicus piniperda is an economically important pine bark beetle infesting European Pinus spp. stands. We sequenced and analyzed 797 bp of the mitochondrial genome from individuals obtained from 34 populations sampled throughout the European range. We obtained 36 haplotypes, from which a haplotype network was constructed. In the Iberian Peninsula, high-genetic variability was detected with numerous endemic haplotypes. In contrast, the other European populations were less diverse with a single haplotype predominating from the Pyrenees to Scandinavia. Nevertheless, even within Europe, a few popul

Karyotype evolution and phylogenetic conflict in Eurasian wild asses illuminated by a chromosome-level genome assembly of the Mongolian wild ass (Equus hemionus hemionus).

The evolutionary history and taxonomy of the Eurasian wild ass (Equus hemionus) remain contentious due to limited genomic resources and conflicting phylogenetic signals. Here, we present the first chromosome-level genome assembly of the Mongolian wild ass (E. h. hemionus). The assembly reveals a diploid number of 2n = 52 and identifies a lineage-specific chromosomal fusion homologous to horse chromosomes 8q and 15, which is uniquely shared with E. kiang. By integrating autosomal, mitochondrial, and Y-chromosomal data with paleogenomes, we resolved a well-supported phylogeny identifying four ma

Acipensericola glacialis n. sp. (Digenea: Aporocotylidae) from heart of lake sturgeon Acipenser fulvescens Rafinesque (Acipenseriformes: Acipenseridae) in the Great Lakes Basin, Lake Winnebago System, USA.

Acipensericola glacialis n. sp. infects the heart of lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens (Rafinesque), in the Lake Winnebago System and differs from its only congener, Acipensericola petersoni Bullard, Snyder, Jensen & Overstreet, 2008, by having a dendritic intestine, deeply-lobed testes, a post-ovarian oötype, and a common genital pore that is medial to the dextral caecum. Acipensericola petersoni has a non-dendritic intestine, testes that are not deeply lobed, an oötype that is at level of the ovary (ventral to the ovary), and a common genital pore that is dorsal to the dextral caecum. Region-specific modeling of refugia and anthelmintic resistance dynamics in gastrointestinal nematodes of Nigerian small ruminants.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are a major constraint to small ruminant productivity in Nigeria, causing economic losses through reduced growth, morbidity, and mortality. The widespread use of broad-spectrum anthelmintics has led to the emergence of anthelmintic resistance (AR), threatening the sustainability of parasite control programmes. Refugia-based strategies, such as targeted selective treatment (TST), have been recommended to slow resistance development, but no predictive framework currently guides their implementation in Nigeria's diverse livestock systems. Region-specific mathemati

Genomic history of the Caucasus: A systematic review and meta-analysis of ancient DNA studies.

The Caucasus region represents a unique natural laboratory for paleogenetic research due to its complex topography, long-standing role as a migratory corridor and glacial refugium, and exceptional preservation conditions for ancient DNA. This review synthesizes recent genome-wide studies to reconstruct the demographic history shaping the distinctive genetic landscape of modern Caucasus populations. The analysis reveals a deep pattern of continuity, isolation, and periodic admixture. Early genetic differentiation emerged in the Neolithic and Chalcolithic, forming distinct steppe and mountain po

The emergence of macrocyclic lactone resistance in the canine heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis.

Prevention of heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis in domestic dogs and cats relies on a single drug class, the macrocyclic lactones (MLs). Recently, it has been demonstrated that ML-resistant D. immitis are circulating in the Mississippi Delta region of the USA, but the prevalence and impact of these resistant parasites remains unknown. We review published studies that demonstrated resistance in D.immitis, along with our current understanding of its mechanisms. Efforts to develop in vitro tests for resistance have not yet yielded a suitable assay, so testing infected animals for mi

Evaluation of a refugia-based strategy for gastrointestinal nematodes on weight gain and fecal egg counts in naturally infected stocker calves administered combination anthelmintics.

Refugia-based strategies associated with a combination of anthelmintic drugs belonging to different drug classes are becoming more common management practices to mitigate anthelmintic resistance (AR) in gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in small ruminants. Though refugia-based strategies have been largely demonstrated in small ruminants, cattle veterinarians and producers are considering such management strategies in grazing cattle production systems. Implementing refugia-based strategies lowers the amount of anthelmintics used in the herd and therefore slows the progression of AR by allowing a

Keratoprosthesis. Implantation of artificial corneas.

Keratoprosthesis (implantation of artificial, plastic cornea) is indicated in severe cases with corneal leucoma (non-transparent, cicatrized cornea) in which keratoplasty (corneal transplantation) is not possible or has repeatedly failed. In the past 40 years we implanted 37 artificial corneas (7 Cardona type, 29 Konstantinov type, 1 Fjodorov type). The visual acuity increase was temporary (lasting from a few weeks to a few months) in 25 patients. The visual acuity was at least 0.2 three years following the implantation of keratoprosthesis in 12 patients. One patient had 1.0 vision 10 years af

Population genetic structure of Dactylogyrus vistulae, a gill parasite of cyprinoid fish in the Western Palearctic.

Monogenean parasites with a broad host range and direct life cycle provide insight into population genetic structure and dispersal processes. Dactylogyrus vistulae infects over 50 cyprinoid fish species across the western Palearctic, making it an ideal model for assessing host and geographic influences on parasite population structure. Herein, we utilized 20 microsatellite loci and mitochondrial COI sequences to analyze the genetic variability and structure of D. vistulae populations, with a deeper focus on Czech river systems. Low allelic variance was observed across most populations, except

Depth- and temperature-specific fatty acid adaptations in ctenophores from extreme habitats.

Animals are known to regulate the composition of their cell membranes to maintain key biophysical properties in response to changes in temperature. For deep-sea marine organisms, high hydrostatic pressure represents an additional, yet much more poorly understood, perturbant of cell membrane structure. Previous studies in fish and marine microbes have reported correlations with temperature and depth of membrane-fluidizing lipid components, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids. Because little has been done to isolate the separate effects of temperature and pressure on the lipid pool, it is still

Rapid selection for β-tubulin alleles in codon 200 conferring benzimidazole resistance in an Ostertagia ostertagi isolate on pasture.

Resistance to benzimidazoles (BZs) is widespread in sheep nematodes and increasing in those of cattle. Several reasons including the predominant use of pour-on anthelmintics and lack of scales in field conditions lead to under-dosing of cattle and therefore to increased selection pressure. In an field experiment the frequency of BZ-resistance associated allele (TAC) in codon 200 in the β-tubulin isotype 1 gene of Ostertagia ostertagi was monitored over one grazing season (approximately 30 weeks). Group 1, consisting of four calves, was experimentally infected with a pure O. ostertagi populatio

The role of feral mammals on wildlife infectious disease prevalence in two nature reserves within Mexico City limits.

Wild and feral medium-sized mammals were live trapped at two natural protected areas within the Mexico City limits to determine antibody prevalence for the most common infectious diseases (rabies, toxoplasmosis, and canine parvovirus) in dogs and cats. Mammals were trapped during the dry (March-April) and rainy seasons (July-August) of 1996 and 1997. A total of 68 individuals were captured, representing 8 species: opossums (Didelphis virginiana), ringtails (Bassariscus astutus), spotted skunks (Spilogale gracilis), weasels (Mustela frenata), rock squirrels (Spermophilus variegatus), Mexican gr

Phylogeography and taxonomic status of the Formica picea complex (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

The black bog ant Formica picea complex is widespread from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts of Eurasia. This complex was earlier believed to consist of one or two species (F. picea and F. candida). However, molecular analysis suggested that it includes three cryptic species. One is F. picea from Europe, another, F. candida, is currently known exclusively from Kyrgyzstan, while the third one, temporarily designated here as Formica sp., inhabits the easternmost part of Eurasia from China to Kamchatka. It is unknown how F. picea and Formica sp. are distributed in Siberia and whether their range

Population replacement of benzimidazole-resistant Haemonchus contortus with susceptible strains: evidence of changes in the resistance status.

The spread of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in nematode populations threatens the viability of sheep production systems worldwide, and warrants the adoption of sensitive, practical, and standardized tests to detect AR. The aim of this study was to characterize the replacement of an Haemonchus contortus population resistant to benzimidazoles (BZDs) by a susceptible one, by means of both phenotypic and genotypic techniques. Phenotypic methods to assess BZD resistance included in vivo tests, such as the fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT), and in vitro tests, such as the egg hatch assay (EHA).

New Australopithecus robustus fossils and associated U-Pb dates from Cooper's Cave (Gauteng, South Africa).

Australopithecus robustus is one of the best represented hominin taxa in Africa, with hundreds of specimens recovered from six fossil localities in the Bloubank Valley area of Gauteng Province, South Africa. However, precise geochronological ages are presently lacking for these fossil cave infills. In this paper, we provide a detailed geological background to a series of hominin fossils retrieved from the newly investigated deposit of Cooper's D (located partway between Sterkfontein and Kromdraai in the Bloubank Valley), including uranium-lead (U-Pb) ages for speleothem material associated wit
