"Sex Offender" Versus "Person": The Influence of Labels on Willingness to Volunteer With People Who Have Sexually Abused.

The present study examined the effect of offense-based labels on community members' willingness to volunteer with people convicted for varying offenses and any priming effect of labeling language. Participants (N = 310) were randomly assigned to a label condition or a neutral condition and completed an anonymous online survey about their willingness to volunteer with different groups. The labeling condition utilized labels (e.g., "sex offenders," "murderers"), whereas the control condition utilized neutral descriptors (e.g., "people who have committed crimes of a sexual nature"). Overall, find

Rising rates of vaccine exemptions: problems with current policy and more promising remedies.

Parents of school-age children are increasingly claiming nonmedical exemptions to refuse vaccinations required for school entry. The resultant unvaccinated pockets in many areas of the country have been linked with outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases. Many states are now focused on reducing rates of nonmedical exemptions by making exemption processes more restrictive or burdensome for the exemptor. These strategies, however, pose ethical problems and may ultimately be inadequate. A shift to strategies that raise the financial liabilities of exemptors may lead to better success and prove

[Failures to comply with the routine childhood immunization schedule due to contraindications and the use of alternative vaccines in children aged 0-4 years in the Czech Republic].

The study objective was to determine the rate of failures to present for routine childhood immunization due to either parental vaccine refusal, failure to comply with the immunization schedule and real or false contraindications. The rate of use of alternative vaccines which can be provided within the routine immunization schedule either on parental request or when recommended by the physician was also determined. We analyzed records of 5,038 children born between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2004 and registered with a sample of general practitioners. We identified 1,284 cases (25.5 %) of

A Survey Exploring Reasons behind Immunization Refusal among the Parents and Caregivers of Children under Two Years Living in Urban Slums of Karachi, Pakistan.

This study assesses the experiences of parents/caregivers regarding the refusal to childhood immunization. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the parents/caregivers of children under two years old from January 2019 to June 2019 who were residents of either Pathan Colony or Orangi Town, Karachi. In this study, the data collectors targeted parents/caregivers of 440 households who showed a refusal mark "R" in the Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) H-chalking system. These households were approached using a 30 × 7 multistage-stratified-cluster random sampling technique and were interv

Central Register of Objections for Deceased Donation in Poland 1996 to 2014: The Country With an Opting-Out System.

BACKGROUND: Organ, tissue, and cell procurement from deceased donors for transplantation requires consent and authorization, documented donor's positive acceptance, or lack of objection to donation expressed while alive (consent). It also requires the fulfillment of other legal conditions required by law, such as person's legal abilities to act in this field or to obtain approval for donation (authorization). Consent to and authorization of donation from deceased donors requires regulations at the national level. Poland developed an opting-out policy with the Transplantation Act in 1996. The C

Impact of canine-assisted ambulation on hospitalized chronic heart failure patients' ambulation outcomes and satisfaction: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: Chronic heart failure (HF) is a prevalent and costly disease process. Early ambulation has been shown to have a positive impact on patient outcomes and length of stay. Animal-assisted therapy is a novel modality that has shown to be a safe and effective adjunct to a number of traditional treatment plans. This study sought to synergistically combine ambulation and animal-assisted therapy by using canine-assisted ambulation (CAA) to improve the ambulation outcomes of HF patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine hospitalized patients with a primary diagnosis o

Evaluation of organ procurement in an area under the influence of a training program.

INTRODUCTION: The procurement of organs was evaluated in an area of 1,450,000 inhabitants. This area provides two international programs and two training courses for transplant coordinators. One of them deals with the entire process of donation and transplantation, and the other is a monographic course about family consent and donation request. One transplantation coordinator manages the area. METHODS: The results of the last 6 years have been analyzed concerning the procurement of organ donors (related to brain death [BD] donors, exitus at the hospital, and the intensive care unit [ICU]); lo

Recruitment of patients to a glaucoma drug trial in a district general hospital.

We report the difficulties experienced in identifying and recruiting 21 patients with ocular hypertension or primary open-angle glaucoma to participate in a clinical trial of two topical beta-blockers. The case-notes of 374 consecutive patients expected to attend routine glaucoma clinics were reviewed to recruit 21 eligible patients who were willing to undergo the drug trial. Recruitment of patients to prospective drug trials may be complicated by a high proportion of exclusions due to ineligibility and also by refusal of otherwise eligible patients.

Acceptance or refusal of convenience food in present-day prison.

Food in prison is an insufficiently researched topic. However, prisoners often highlight problems with and criticism of their prison meals. This article aims to further develop this topic by giving closer insight into the use and attitudes toward ready-made meals in the Tilburg prison. In this prison, prisoners receive ready-made meals. This is in contrast to Belgian prisons, from which they were transferred, where meals were made from scratch. This change in the food system led to commotion and complaints. To understand the situation, interviews with prisoners and staff were conducted and obs

A conceptual framework for understanding iatrophobia.

OBJECTIVE: Iatrophobia - fear of doctors, medical care, or the medical care system - is common among patients and can negatively impact their health-seeking behaviors and relationships with health care professionals. Despite this, academic literature on iatrophobia often fails to explore its nuanced causes. METHODS: We establish a conceptual framework of iatrophobia, categorizing sources of fear that may create barriers to accessing medical care, and recommend a research agenda to address this phenomenon and understand its role in medical care. RESULTS: The framework includes three categorie

Soil-transmitted helminth surveillance in Benin: A mixed-methods analysis of factors influencing non-participation in longitudinal surveillance activities.

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant success of deworming programs in reducing morbidity due to soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections globally, efforts to achieve elimination of STH as a public health problem or to potentially interrupt transmission will require improving and intensifying surveillance. However, non-participation in surveillance threatens the ability of programs to adequately monitor program status and limited research has been conducted to investigate drivers of non-participation in stool-based surveillance. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This mixed-methods exploratory s

Informed consent as a source of bias in clinical research.

Clinical observation suggested that schizophrenic patients more often refused to participate in experiments. In two studies psychiatric patient volunteers and nonvolunteers were compared on discharge diagnoses (psychiatric and medical), medication given, demographic measures, and hospitalization characteristics. In each study, patients with paranoid schizophrenia were more likely to refuse participation. Also, in each study, volunteers received more benzodiazepines and more nonpsychiatric medication. The latter difference could not be explained on the bases of rated severity of or probability

Adding sexual orientation questions to statewide public health surveillance: New Mexico's experience.

We examined refusal rates for sensitive demographic questions to determine whether questions on sexual orientation are too sensitive for routine use on public health surveys. We compared the percentage of active refusals in New Mexico for a sexual orientation question and 6 other sensitive demographic questions. In 2007 and 2008, refusal rates for sexual orientation questions were similar to rates for questions on race/ethnicity and weight and significantly lower than rates for questions on household income. Perceptions that sexual orientation is too controversial a topic to be included on sta

Barriers to Yoga as an Add-On Treatment for Common Mental Health Disorders in India.

BACKGROUND: Yoga has increasingly been recognized as a beneficial adjunctive therapy for mental health disorders in India. However, participation barriers persist. This study examines the factors influencing participation in yoga as an add-on treatment for Common Mental Disorders (CMDs) in India. METHODOLOGY: As the part of a larger open-label comparative study assessing in-person versus virtual yoga, 1147 patients with CMDs were screened at a tertiary care center in Southern India. Of these, 968 were eligible and 130 consented to participate (13.43%). Reasons for refusal were recorded and an
