Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy and the Role of the Rehabilitation Nurse.

Spasticity is a common problem encountered by those who have suffered a neurological injury either cerebral or spinal in origin. Multiple interventions are utilized to manage spasticity to decrease the pain and stiffness. These interventions can include an implanted device that delivers medication directly to the spinal cord. This clinical consultation reviews a patient case and the important information regarding the care of this individual with an intrathecal baclofen pump and important key points of education that all rehabilitation nurses need to know.

Botulinum toxin for blepharospasm: challenges for rehabilitation nurses.

Blepharospasm is a chronic, progressive, involuntary spasmodic closure of the eyelids associated with abnormal facial and oromandibular movements. It is a neurologic disorder whose cause is unknown and whose pathophysiology is poorly understood. Without appropriate treatment, it can result in functional blindness and other disabilities. In the last decade, botulinum toxin has been found to be effective therapy for most individuals. The drug, which is given by local injection, has a denervation effect. It relieves symptoms for several months, allowing patients to resume their former lifestyles

Data from literature mainly deals with acute care and long-term care facilities. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether: i) a nurse-centred model is still effective in rehabilitation wards; ii) patients' dignity is nevertheless considered; iii) nurses experience role satisfaction in a rehabilitation setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was applied. Forty-eight nurses of our rehabilitat

Effect of Cardiac Rehabilitation Nursing on Patients with Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocardial infarction is the myocardial necrosis caused by acute and persistent ischemia and hypoxia of coronary arteries. It can be complicated with arrhythmia, shock or heart failure, and often can endanger life. The disease is most common in Europe and the United States, where about 1.5 million heart attacks occur each year. China has shown a clear upward trend in recent years, with at least 500 000 new cases and at least 2 million new cases every year. Cardiac rehabilitation nursing is a kind of comprehensive nursing that aims to restore the body function of patients with…

How do skilled nursing rehabilitation managers track efficiency and costs?

Financial and efficiency indicators have not been used extensively by skilled nursing (SNF) rehabilitation managers, but may prove useful in the prospective payment system (PPS)-dominated long-term care (LTC) environment. The purpose of this pilot study was to demonstrate a method for measuring the extent of SNF rehabilitation managers' use of volume, revenue, cost, and manpower indicators; and whether usages differ among occupational, physical, and speech therapy managers. The subjects were 74 occupational, 75 physical, and 72 speech therapy managers employed by a multinational health care co

The polio survivor as expert: implications for rehabilitation nursing research.

Clients' personal experiences with illness or tragedy can uniquely qualify them as experts in many research-relevant content areas. Nurse researchers can benefit from this expertise by involving such clients in important decision-making aspects of research planning. The advantages of consulting with client-experts in the early and subsequent stages of research are discussed in this article, which uses as an example the way such consultation has worked in the development of a study of coping in polio survivors. Consultation with client-experts is especially appropriate when research involves se

Prosthetic rehabilitation of edentulism prevents malnutrition in nursing home residents.

To investigate the association between prosthetic rehabilitation and malnutrition in institutionalized elders, 255 nursing home residents were recruited for this study and underwent a comprehensive dental examination. The body mass index (BMI) was administered to estimate the nutritional condition. Participants with BMI < 20 kg/mc were categorized as malnourished (n = 33), whereas all others were categorized as adequately nourished (n = 222). The number of teeth present and the prevalence of prosthetic rehabilitation were significantly lower in malnourished participants (P < .05). Malnutrition

Inpatient rehabilitation: physiatric and nurse practitioner admission assessment of stroke patients and their rehabilitation outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes in stroke patients with two different methods of admission to an inpatient unit. Patients' outcomes were studied for 3 years. Admission screening was performed either by a physiatrist (group I, n = 93) or by a nurse practitioner (group II, n = 100). All admission decisions were made solely by the physiatrist. The outcome measures used were appropriateness of admission, discharge to home versus nursing home and functional gains measured on the Functional Independence Measure. The average length of stay was 28 days for group 1 patients and 29 day

Human Trafficking in Rehabilitation: What Nurses Need to Know.

Violence and human trafficking are frequently paired and violate human rights. Human trafficking is a complex, global health issue. Trafficking survivors report seeking medical care for women's services, physical abuse, mental health, and gastrointestinal issues while being held in captivity. However, the majority of healthcare providers are unaware or unprepared to intervene, thus missing the chance to identify victims during these encounters. Rehabilitation nurses are no exception. Trafficking victims may come in contact with rehabilitation nurses because of injuries or chronic diseases caus
