Living systems maintain physiological variables such as temperature, blood pressure, and glucose within narrow ranges-a process known as homeostasis. Homeostasis involves not only reactive feedback but also anticipatory adjustments shaped by experience. Prior homeostatic reinforcement learning (HRL) models have provided a computational account of anticipatory regulation under homeostatic challenges. However, existing formulations lack mechanisms for gradual, trial-by-trial adjustment and for extinction learning. To address this issue, we developed a continuous HRL framework that enables trial-

Many studies have shown that pigeons will sometimes behave suboptimally by choosing an option that provides food less frequently over one that provides food more frequently. The critical factor in driving suboptimal behavior in these procedures is that the delayed outcomes are differentially signaled on the suboptimal alternative, but not the optimal alternative. Although this procedure is frequently cited as potentially analogous to human gambling, there is little empirical data to evaluate this assertion. The present study tested both pigeon (Experiment 1) and human (Experiment 2) subjects w

Three pigeons' pecks were reinforced on 1- and 2-min variable-interval schedules, and frequency distributions of their interresponse times (IRTs) were recorded. The conditional probability that a response would fall into any IRT category was estimated by the interresponse-times-per-opportunity transformation (IRTs/op). The resulting functions were notable chiefly for the relatively low probability of IRTs in the 0.2- to 0.3-sec range; in other respects they varied within and between subjects. The overall level of the curves generally rose over the course of 32 experimental hours, but their sha

Multiline slots are popular electronic gaming machines. Research suggests that particular outcomes on these games, namely losses disguised as a wins or LDWs, may make these games particularly alluring to gamblers. LDWs occur when one wins less than they wager, but the machine celebrates these net losses with flashing lines and winning sounds (e.g., bet a dollar, win back a dime). Players are known to somatically, psychologically, and behaviourlly miscategorize LDWs as wins rather than losses. Furthermore, LDWs lead players to overestimate how many times they thought they won during a playing s

Rats were trained to bar-press for Noyes pellets on an FI schedule which was increased serially through several values from 2 sec to as high as 300 sec. Concurrently, water was freely available. As FI length was increased, the degree of polydipsia increased linearly to a maximum value.

OBJECTIVE: Theoretical accounts of ADHD predict impaired learning under partial reinforcement and altered behavioral persistence under extinction. One of these theories (Amsel, 1992) postulates increased negative emotional responding (i.e., frustration) underlies these impairments, but to date emotional responding during instrumental learning has received limited attention. The current experimental study investigated behavioral and emotional responding during an instrumental learning task under different reinforcement schedules.
METHODS: Eighty-four children with ADHD and 83 neurotypical chil

This study demonstrated reinforcement control over pronounced feminine behaviors in a male child who had been psychologically evaluated as manifesting "childhood cross-gender identity". The clinical history of the subject paralleled the retrospective reports of adult transsexuals, including (a) cross-gender clothing preferences, (b) actual or imaginal use of cosmetic articles, (c) feminine behavior mannerisms, (d) aversion to masculine activities, coupled with preference for girl playmates and feminine activities, (e) preference for female role, (f) feminine voice inflection and predominantly

This study examined whether habitual video game play influences reinforcement learning dynamics, feedback adaptation, consolidation, and motivational biases. Two groups of participants (gamers and controls) completed a Probabilistic Selection Task that assessed learning from positive and negative feedback across three phases: Learning, Test, and Transfer. Mixed-effects modeling revealed that gamers showed enhanced learning trajectories, particularly under high-uncertainty conditions; however, computational modeling indicated no differences in learning rate (α), suggesting comparable value upda

Differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) is an intervention used to address challenging behavior; however, its effectiveness may be diminished by procedural fidelity errors. Previous research has shown that DRO effects may be robust despite marginal errors of commission and omission, but the effects of combined errors (i.e., both commission and omission errors) on the efficacy of DRO have not been investigated. The purpose of this study was to parametrically evaluate procedural fidelity level (i.e., 100, 80, 60, 40, and 20% fidelity) in DRO when implemented with combined errors in a

In recent decades, automatic train operation (ATO) systems have been gradually adopted by many metro systems, primarily due to their cost-effectiveness and practicality. However, a critical examination reveals computational constraints, adaptability to unforeseen conditions and multi-objective balancing that our research aims to address. In this paper, expert knowledge is combined with deep reinforcement learning algorithm (Proximal Policy Optimization, PPO) and two enhanced intelligent train operation algorithms (EITO) are proposed. The first algorithm, EITOE, is based on an expert system con

The rate-dependency principle postulates that "stimulants" tend to increase low baseline rates of response and decrease high baseline responses. One exception to this principle is that stimulants do not typically increase responses that has been extinguished. However, drug self-administration studies showed that stimulant pretreatments reinstated extinguished drug-maintained responses. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of noncontingent cocaine on extinguished food-maintained responding in 3 male cynomolgus monkeys with extensive cocaine self-administration experience. Monkeys

Excessive defecation, typically considered to be a concomitant of stress, was experimentally induced or eliminated under specific schedules of positive reinforcement of lever pressing by rats. The schedules were, by and large, those under which polydipsia is typically induced. In the first of three experiments, rats under fixed-interval 32-second schedules and variable interval 32-second schedules for food and water reinforcers defecated profusely, but not under fixed-interval one-second schedules or other small interval schedules. Somewhat higher rates of defecation were observed on variable

OBJECTIVES: The Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) is a neuropsychological theory of personality emphasizing approach and avoidance as the two core behavioral aspects. Approach is represented by the behavioral approach system (BAS). Avoidance is represented by the behavioral inhibition system (BIS) and the fight-flight-freeze system (FFFS). Although the influence of testosterone on human behavior has been demonstrated, few studies have investigated the relation between testosterone and the RST. The aim of this narrative review was to decipher the possible role of testosterone on the biolog

This paper reviews two learning theory-based models of experiential contributions to depression: response contingent positive reinforcement and learned helplessness. The authors argue that these models connect to a phenomenon that may explain why symptoms of behavioral excess (e.g. rumination) often occur in depression that is otherwise marked by symptoms of behavioral deficit (e.g. anhedonia). Specifically, the authors illustrate that that concept of schedule strain (or low rates of response contingent reinforcement giving rise to low frequencies of behavior) unites these models. Depression i

In two experiments, food-deprived rat subjects leverpressed for food in three successive training phases. In the first phase of both experiments, rats were exposed to a multiple schedule, one component of which produced a high rate of response, and the other of which produced a lower rate of response (multiple random ratio [RR], random interval [RI] in Experiment 1, and multiple differential reinforcement of high rate, differential reinforcement of low rate in Experiment 2). Rats were then transferred to a multiple fixed interval (FI; 60-sec, 60-sec) schedule, until the effects of the first ph

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) can be defined by a compulsion to seek and take alcohol, the loss of control in limiting intake, and the emergence of a negative emotional state when access to alcohol is prevented. Alcohol use disorder impacts multiple motivational mechanisms and can be conceptualized as a disorder that includes a progression from impulsivity (positive reinforcement) to compulsivity (negative reinforcement). Compulsive drug seeking that is associated with AUD can be derived from multiple neuroadaptations, but the thesis argued herein is that a key component involves the construct of

We develop a new perspective on various forms of psychological suffering - including attachment issues, burn-out, and fatigue complaints - by drawing on the construct of learned helplessness. We conceptualise learned helplessness in operant terms as the behavioural effects of a lack of reinforcement and in goal-directed terms as the dysregulation of goal-directed behaviour. Our central claim is that if one fails to reach a goal (e.g. the goal to secure a job), then not only this goal but also other related goals (e.g. the goal to maintain social relationships) may lose their motivating effects

Alcohol addiction is a chronically relapsing disorder, characterized by compulsive alcohol seeking and taking, the loss of control in limiting intake, and the emergence of hyperkatifeia (a sensitized negative emotional state) during withdrawal. The hypothesis of this review is that alcohol addiction represents a break with homeostatic brain regulatory mechanisms that regulate the emotional state of the individual via three stages of the addiction cycle and three respective domains of dysfunction. As addiction develops, the withdrawal/negative affect stage, which mediates the development of a p

We present the results of a field study examining the effect of losses disguised as wins (LDWs) on subsequent slot machine gambler betting behavior. An LDW occurs when the amount won is less than the amount bet. Using non-experimental, individual transaction gambling data, we examine post LDW betting behavior in a panel of 42,669 gamblers and 17 million slot machine plays. The primary empirical findings include: (1) streaks of three LDWs greater than 75% of the original amount bet lead slot gamblers to increase the amount bet on the next spin; (2) streaks of three LDWs less than 25% of the ori
