Training generalized receptive prepositions in retarded children.

THREE RETARDED CHILDREN WERE TRAINED, USING PROMPTING AND REINFORCEMENT PROCEDURES, TO RESPOND CORRECTLY TO THREE CATEGORIES OF PREPOSITIONAL REQUESTS: "put the-next to the-", "put the-under the-", and "put the-on top of the-". Training sessions were alternated with probe sessions throughout the study. During training, a child was trained to respond to one request (e.g., "put the doll next to the cup"); during probing, the child was tested for generalization of this training to untrained requests. Responses to untrained requests were never prompted nor reinforced. The results showed that, as r

Impact of Verbal Suggestions on Finger Flexor Activation and Strength in Healthy Individuals.

BACKGROUND Words uttered by other people can have an enormous influence on how we perceive our surroundings, what we expect, what we experience, and how we behave. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of verbal reinforcement on the placebo effect in the context of finger flexor muscle activation measured with surface electromyography (sEMG) and hand grip strength measured with a hand dynamometer in healthy subjects. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty-eight individuals aged 22.64±5.2 years took part in the study. For each person, paper tape was applied (placebo). The participants were randomly assi

Geriatric paranoia: case report illustrating behavioral management.

Paranoid thinking is a defense mechanism against feelings of inferiority and humiliation. Paranoid behavior serves as a means of getting attention, sympathy and help. A case study of an 81-year-old woman illustrates the nature of geriatric paranoia and the roles of interpersonal relationships, rigid personality, depression, and the impairment of sensory and memory functions. The problem proved to be the effects on the family and neighbors of the patient's verbally expressed paranoid delusions. Treatment consisted of reducing the frequency of these paranoid complaints by means of reality therap

Probabilistic reinforcement learning abnormalities and their correlates in adolescent bipolar disorders.

Theoretical models of bipolar disorders (BD) posit core deficits in reward system function. However, specifying which among the multiple reward system's neurobehavioral processes are abnormal in BD is necessary to develop appropriately targeted interventions. Research on probabilistic-reinforcement learning deficits in BD is limited, particularly during adolescence, a period of significant neurodevelopmental changes in the reward system. The present study investigated probabilistic-reinforcement learning, using a probabilistic selection task (PST), and its correlates, using self-reported rewar

Language training for generalization.

This paper presents a classroom-based language intervention program for preschool children with language delays or deficits. A major goal of the program is to ensure that children acquire missing skills through daily speech therapy and that they actively generalize these skills from therapy times to other classroom activities. This paper presents data collected with two children during daily speech therapy sessions and daily play activities. Instances in which the children generalized new language acquired in therapy to play activities will be discussed as well as instances in which the childr

Variable effects of a behavioral treatment package on the performance of inline roller speed skaters.

We investigated the effects of a treatment package on the performance of correct relay tags with 4 inline speed skaters. The treatment package included verbal praise following correct tags, visual feedback of performance data, and instruction for improving performance. Initial gains in the frequency of correct tags were not maintained at 6-month follow-up when baselines were reestablished. Performance on the second intervention phase for the 3 original subjects was variable and differed from the initial phase, whereas the original findings were replicated in the 4th subject. Possible reasons f

Strategies to increase exercise-report correspondence by boys with moderate mental retardation: collateral changes in intention-exercise correspondence.

Correspondence between verbal and nonverbal behavior in an exercise room was taught to 4 13-year-old boys diagnosed with moderate mental retardation. Participants were asked prior to each exercise session which exercise machine(s) they intended to use. No contingencies on stating intentions (promising) were applied. Following the exercise session, participants were asked to say (report) which machine(s) they had used. Following the baseline condition, do-report correspondence training was introduced sequentially across participants. During do-report correspondence training, accurate reporting

Caregiver-Implemented Interventions to Improve Daily Living Skills for Individuals With Developmental Disabilities: A Systematic Review.

Many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (DD) encounter difficulties in performing daily living skills, which limits their self-sufficiency and autonomy. Caregivers, such as parents, are often the individuals who interact with individuals with DD the most during daily living skills routines. Therefore, it is critical to teach caregivers to implement daily living skills interventions with their children. A systematic review of the literature related to caregiver-implemented daily living skills interventions yielded 38 articles. Of those, 20 articles, with 21 experiments

The relation of emotions to placebo responses.

The hypothesis put forth is that expectations of treatment effects reduce negative emotions and thereby reduce symptoms, e.g. pain. Negative emotions increase pain, and it is hypothesized that placebos reduce pain by reducing negative emotions, i.e. feelings of nervousness, fear and anxiety. Placebo analgesia has been shown to be mediated via opioid activity, and relaxation increases opioid activity. The placebo acquires its relaxing effect due to verbal information that pain will be reduced, or due to associations between the placebo and the reduction in pain after effective treatment. Thus,

Guidelines for treatment of chronic depression in the aphasic patient.

This article defines the language disorder of aphasia and the motor speech disorders of apraxia of speech and the dysarthrias. Discussion includes depression and the five definable sets of behaviors related to the phenomenon: motor-expressive behaviors, affective, cognitive, motivational, and somatic, and the relationship of self-concept to both depression and visual and verbal thought. Detailed discussion of treatment of chronic depression inpatients with non-organic reactive factors is presented. These include positive reinforcement of desirable behaviors, avoidance of verbal punishment, lab

A comparison of general and specific instructions to promote task engagement and completion by a young man with Asperger syndrome.

Previous research has suggested that the topography of instructions (general vs. specific) may influence the likelihood that young children comply with instructions. The purpose of the current study was to compare the rates of task completion of a young man diagnosed with Asperger syndrome when provided with general and specific instructions pertaining to the task. The results showed that specific instructions occasioned higher levels of task completion, even when no differential reinforcement contingencies were in place.

Use of constant time delay and attentional responses with adolescents.

This study investigated the effectiveness of a constant time delay procedure in teaching adolescents with learning or behavior disorders. Subject matter included social studies and health facts presented in small-group settings. In addition, the study assessed the effects of two attentional responses (general--looking at the target stimuli, or specific--repeating the teacher's question) on students' acquisition of other students' facts and of related nontarget information. Two types of feedback for correct responses were presented: praise plus additional information, and general praise only. R

Effects of undesirable, competing behaviors on the generalization of adaptive skills. A case study.

This study provides a systematic demonstration of generalization failures in which irrelevant stimulus control of competing responses interferes with, or overrides, the stimulus control of adaptive behavior developed during training. Appropriate and inappropriate verbal responses by a 26-year-old woman with severe mental retardation served as the dependent variables. A reversal design across trained and nontrained settings indicates that presenting a stimulus with a prior history of control over "inappropriate" verbalizations concurrently with a stimulus controlling newly acquired "appropriate

Defensive Freezing and the Evolutionary Origins of Meditation in Humans.

The biological origins of meditation in humans remain underexplored, despite extensive scholarship on its cultural history and health effects. We present a theoretical account that traces the origins of meditation to the evolutionarily conserved repertoire of defensive freezing. We propose that this ancient survival response-characterized by motoric immobility, heightened vigilance with narrowed attentional focus, and bradycardia-provided a behavioral, neural, and physiological substrate upon which operant and social reinforcement could act. Over evolutionary time, these response components ma

Staff perceptions of reinforcer responsiveness and aberrant behaviors in people with mental retardation.

Perceptions by staff of the classes of reinforcers and aberrant behaviors of a sample of 470 people with predominantly severe or profound mental retardation were explored. Principal components analysis of a 45-item survey suggested eight classes of reinforcers: consumable, verbal-speaker, visual-motor, social, physical-contact, passive-observer, play, and academic reinforcers. Stepwise multiple regression was used to predict five classes of maladaptive behaviors as measured by the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (irritability, lethargy, stereotypy, hyperactivity, and inappropriate speech) from the

An analysis of vocal stereotypy and therapist fading.

A functional analysis for a boy with Down syndrome and autism suggested that vocal stereotypy was maintained by automatic reinforcement. The analysis also showed that instructions and noncontingent attention suppressed vocal stereotypy. A treatment package consisting of noncontingent attention, contingent demands, and response cost effectively reduced vocal stereotypy. The treatment package remained effective even when noncontingent attention was removed, making the procedure easier to implement. Also, the presence of the therapist in the room with the participant was faded systematically. Aft

Say-do-report training to change chronic behaviors in mentally retarded subjects.

Two mentally retarded subjects with language deficits participated. A say-do-report correspondence training was implemented to break the functions of present conditions given by a long history of contingencies maintaining chronic inadequate patterns of behavior. The say-do-report procedure was implemented following a multiple baseline design across two behaviors in one subject and in an AB design for the other. During baseline, all possible social contingencies maintaining the inadequate behaviors were eliminated. Promising or saying what a subject would do was then implemented and followed by

The utility of assessing musical preference before implementation of noncontingent music to reduce vocal stereotypy.

We conducted a modified paired-choice preference assessment and used a multielement design to examine the effects of noncontingent access to high- and low-preference music on vocal stereotypy exhibited by children with autism. For 3 of the 4 participants, high-preference music (a) produced lower levels of vocal stereotypy than low-preference music and (b) reduced vocal stereotypy when compared to a no-interaction condition. Results underscore the potential importance of assessing musical preference prior to using noncontingent music to reduce vocal stereotypy.

The effectiveness of and preschoolers' preferences for variations of multiple-schedule arrangements.

Multiple schedules of reinforcement have been used to teach children to recruit attention only when it is available, thereby minimizing disruptive requesting during instructional activities. This procedure involves alternating periods of continuous reinforcement (CRF) with periods of extinction and correlating each period with a distinct and continuous discriminative stimulus. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of and children's preferences for multiple schedules in which (a) two different stimuli, one correlated with reinforcement (S+) and another correlated with extinction (S-), w
