The lasting impacts of relative energy deficiency in sport imposed on pregnancy health outcomes: A survey-based investigation.

BACKGROUND: Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) results from exposure to problematic low energy availability. It is a serious condition affecting the health and athletic performance of up to 80% of elite female athletes. REDs is established to have negative short-term effects on reproductive function, but the long-term impact of this condition is unknown. Therefore, we examined the impact of secondary amenorrhea with or without a concurrent diagnosis of REDs on perinatal health outcomes. METHODS: Postpartum individuals (≥18 years of age) completed an online questionnaire that covered d

Evaluating Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Derived Glucose Variability in Athletes Clinically Diagnosed With Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs).

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) is a multifactorial condition with significant long-term health and performance implications. Acute low energy availability (LEA) may suppress glucose levels, particularly nocturnally; however, this has not been investigated in athletes with clinically diagnosed REDs. This pilot study examined if glucose variations exist and are detectable using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and associations between dietary intake, specifically carbohydrate (CHO) and glucose variability among women athletes with clinically diagnosed REDs compared to matched cont

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and Goldman's Dilemma: A Case Report in 42 Year-Old Woman Endurance Athlete.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) defines insufficient calorie intake for the physiological and athletic functions of the athlete, and accordingly deterioration in the musculoskeletal, hormonal, cardiovascular and immune systems. Herein, we present a 42-year-old female long-distance runner with multiple pelvic stress fractures who didn't complete her prescribed treatment program and wanted to keep running despite being aware of the associated pain and risks. The Goldman dilemma refers to the unsettling reality that a significant number of professional athletes may contemplate sacrifi

Body Image, Disordered Eating, and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport Risk in Female Athletes: Associations Across Psychological and Behavioral Factors.

BACKGROUND: Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) is traditionally conceptualized as a physiological consequence of low energy availability, yet emerging evidence implicates psychological and behavioral mechanisms in its development. This study examined the associations among body image, disordered eating, social physique anxiety, and female health knowledge to clarify psychosocial antecedents of REDs risk in female athletes. HYPOTHESIS: Negative body image will be associated with REDs risk and disordered eating. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS

The importance of bone health for pediatric athletes: From juvenile osteochondritis dissecans to relative energy deficiency in sports.

Vitamin D is pivotal for bone health, muscle strength, recovery, and overall athletic performance. This article discusses the effects of vitamin D deficiency among athletes, with a specific focus on its connection to sports-related conditions like Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and Juvenile Osteochondritis Dissecans (JOCD). Additionally, we review the importance of vitamin D for muscle strength and muscle repair. Vitamin D deficiency exacerbates the risk of stress fractures in RED-S patients due to its impact on bone biology. Research points to an increased incidence of vitamin D

"I'd got self-destruction down to a fine art": a qualitative exploration of relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) in endurance athletes.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) is a syndrome of impaired health and performance that occurs as a result of low energy availability (LEA). Whilst many health effects associated with RED-S have been widely studied from a physiological perspective, further research exploring the psychological antecedents and consequences of the syndrome is required. Therefore, the aim of this study was to qualitatively explore athlete experiences of RED-S. Twelve endurance athletes (female n= 10, male n= 2; M age = 28.33 years) reporting past or current experiences of RED-S, associated with periods o

Development of an LC-HRMS/MS Method for Quantifying Steroids and Thyroid Hormones in Capillary Blood: A Potential Tool for Assessing Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).

Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) is a condition that arises from persistent low energy availability (LEA), which affects the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and results in alterations of several hormones in both male and female athletes. As frequent blood hormone status determinations using venipuncture are rare in sports practice, microsampling offers promising possibilities for preventing and assessing RED-S. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a liquid chromatography-high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS) method for quantifying relevant steroids and thyroid hormo

Relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) not only affects female athletes, but male athletes as well. It results from severe and/or prolonged low energy availability, when energy intake no longer meets energy expenditure. In men, REDs may present as decreased performance, persistent fatigue, recurrent infections, mood disturbances, reduced libido, functional hypogonadism, impaired bone health, and an increased risk of stress fractures. Diagnosis is a medical decision based on a comprehensive clinical evaluation, as there are no specific biomarkers, and may be supported by structured tools su

How Do We Assess Energy Availability and RED-S Risk Factors in Para Athletes?

Low energy availability (LEA) is considered to be the underlying cause of a number of maladaptations in athletes, including impaired physiological function, low bone mineral density (BMD), and hormonal dysfunction. This is collectively referred to as 'Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport' (RED-S). LEA is calculated through assessment of dietary energy intake (EI), exercise energy expenditure (EEE) and fat-free mass (FFM). The incidence of LEA in Paralympic athletes is relatively unknown; however, there are legitimate concerns that Para athletes may be at even higher risk of LEA than able-bodied

Barriers and enablers to measuring resting metabolic rate in the high-performance sporting system: A qualitative exploratory study.

Measurements of resting metabolic rate (RMR) may be undertaken for dietary planning purposes or to assess for low energy availability (LEA). This study investigated barriers and enablers to measuring RMR in real-world, high-performance sport environments. Twelve interviews were conducted with technicians (n = 6 dietitians, n = 6 physiologists) employed across six National Institute Networks, two National Sporting Organisations and one professional sporting code. RMR was predominantly measured to screen for LEA with measurements only occurring in a few instances for dietary planning purposes. D
