Design and development of a wheelchair seating pressure relief reminder system for pressure ulcer prevention among paraplegics.

Individuals with paraplegia spend their time on the wheelchair for life. Adapting to prolonged wheelchair seating for almost all activities of daily living is challenging. The loss of abilities to sense any pain or excessive seating pressure cause them to remain seated on the wheelchair without any pressure relief activities. This situation leads to secondary complications including pressure ulcer which further degrades the individual's health. To overcome this, a wheelchair seating pressure relief training system (WSETs) was developed. Optimal placement of the force sensitive resistors (FSR)

Reducing urinary catheter use: a protocol for a mixed methods evaluation of an electronic reminder system in hospitalised patients in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite advances in infection prevention and control, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are common and remain problematic. Prolonged urinary catheterisation is the main risk factor for development of CAUTIs; hence, interventions that target early catheter removal warrant investigation. The study's objectives are to examine the efficacy of an electronic reminder system, the CATH TAG, in reducing urinary catheter use (device utilisation ratio) and to determine the effect of the CATH TAG on nurses' ability to deliver patient care. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This stud

Impact of Patient Reminders on Papanicolaou Test Completion for High-Risk Patients Identified by a Clinical Decision Support System.

BACKGROUND: A clinical decision support system (CDSS) for cervical cancer screening identifies patients due for routine cervical cancer screening. Yet, high-risk patients who require more frequent screening or earlier follow-up to address past abnormal results are not identified. We aimed to assess the effect of a complex CDSS, incorporating national guidelines for high-risk patient screening and abnormal result management, its implementation to identify patients overdue for testing, and the outcome of sending a targeted recommendation for follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At three primary ca

A newborn liver mass that never existed: a somber reminder of embryonic ties between umbilical vein and portal venous system.

A 6-day-old, known to have transposition of the great vessels, received care in the neonatal intensive care unit at a tertiary care center. A computed tomography scan was performed for abdominal distention and upper gastrointestinal bleeding, which revealed a "mass lesion" in the left liver lobe. Analysis of antecedent events and the clinical and laboratory course uncovered an iatrogenic etiology and pathogenesis of the lesion. As the nature of the lesion was clarified, no specific therapy was required. This case is presented to show a serious yet preventable complication of a commonly perform

Autosaved Incident Report Drafts: Log-Based Evidence of Completion, Return-to-Complete Behavior, and Reminder-Linked Submission in a Multisite Patient Safety Reporting System.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Patient safety reporting studies usually examine intention, submitted reports, or reporting rates, leaving unclear what happens after a report is started but before it is submitted, deleted, or left unfinished. We evaluated whether autosave and fixed-time reminders make this hidden stage observable. ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to quantify draft outcomes, interaction burden, completion timing, return-to-draft behavior, and reminder-linked submission among autosaved incident report drafts. ABSTRACT: METHODS: This was a retrospective log-based study of draft hea

Electronic health record nested pragmatic randomized controlled trial of a reminder system for serum lithium level monitoring in patients with mood disorder: KONOTORI study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The weaknesses of classical explanatory randomized controlled trials (RCTs) include limited generalizability, high cost, and time burden. Pragmatic RCTs nested within electronic health records (EHRs) can be useful to overcome such limitations. Serum lithium monitoring has often been underutilized in real-world practice in Japan. This trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the EHR-nested reminder system for serum lithium level monitoring in the maintenance of therapeutic lithium concentration and in the improvement of the quality of care for patients on lithium maintenance ther

RadioMe: an automated home-based radio, music playlist, and diary reminder system: Report on recruitment, music compilation, and listening, and preliminary testing of heart rate activated music.

BACKGROUND: One of the leading reasons for early admission to a care home in dementia is the escalation of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), and music listening can help regulate these symptoms. AIMS: RadioMe was a project designed for people living at home with dementia to build a system to help them maintain the highest quality of life there for as long as possible, with three functional components: 1. Streaming radio; 2. Providing pre-recorded spoken diary reminders; 3. interrupting the radio with pre-compiled playlists when a wrist-worn heart rate (HR) monitor detects stress. This article

Traditional or technological? A cross sectional survey of oral contraceptive reminders in young adults.

OBJECTIVES: For patients relying only on oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) for pregnancy prevention, timely and correct usage of OCPs is essential. This study describes the prevalence of reminder systems used among our patients, the patient population that uses those reminder systems, and whether the reminder system was effective for the user in terms of not missing pills per pack. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 102 OCP users at 3 individual clinics in the UCLA Health System. To quantify OCP adherence, we used the unit pill pack to indicate one month's supply of OCPs. RES

Using the biomarker cotinine and survey self-report to validate smoking data from United States Veterans Health Administration electronic health records.

OBJECTIVE: Tobacco use/smoking for epidemiologic studies is often derived from electronic health record (EHR) data, which may be inaccurate. We previously compared smoking from the United States Veterans Health Administration (VHA) EHR clinical reminder data with survey data and found excellent agreement. However, the smoking clinical reminder items changed October 1, 2018. We sought to use the biomarker salivary cotinine (cotinine ≥30) to validate current smoking from multiple sources. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 323 Veterans Aging Cohort Study participants with cotinine, clinical rem

Vaccination adherence: Review and proposed model.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of childhood vaccine-preventable diseases can be significantly reduced through adherence to confirmed vaccination schedules. However, many barriers to vaccination compliance exist, including a lack of awareness regarding the importance of vaccines, missing due dates, and fear of complications from vaccinations. The aim of this study is to review the existing tools and publications regarding vaccination adherence, and to propose a design for a vaccination adherence application (app) for smartphones. METHODS: Android and iOS apps designed for vaccination reminders hav
