Health-seeking behavior of Karachi women with reproductive tract infections.

To explore the contextual factors influencing health-seeking behavior of women in Karachi regarding reproductive tract infections, 18 women with reproductive tract infections from different clinics and community settings were identified and in-depth interviews were conducted. Physicians in our study diagnosed a woman to have lower reproductive tract infection if she complained of malodorous vaginal discharge with or without perineal itching; and to have pelvic inflammatory disease or upper reproductive tract infection if she had any two of the following complaints: malodorous vaginal discharge

Sensory and motor components of reproductive behavior: pathways and plasticity.

Reproductive behavior in most mammalian species consists of a highly stereotyped pattern of movements, is elicited by specific sensory stimuli and is sex steroid dependent. The present paper describes a concept of the pathways in the midbrain, brainstem and spinal cord which control the receptive posture of the female cat. The midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG), which is an important structure in the Emotional Motor System (EMS), receives direct input from a distinct group of neurons in the dorsal horn of the lumbosacral cord. This cell group overlaps with the location of pelvic and to lesser

Developmental, regenerative, and behavioral dynamics in acoel reproduction.

Acoel worms belong to an enigmatic and understudied animal lineage in the phylum Xenacoelomorpha. Sparse taxonomic and histological work suggests that these worms exhibit a diversity of reproductive anatomies and likely a corresponding diversity in reproductive behavior. Here, we study the reproductive life history of the three-banded panther worm Hofstenia miamia, an acoel that is emerging as a lab-tractable model system. Using confocal microscopy and histology, we describe H. miamia's reproductive organs, identifying structures previously unknown in acoels. Following a cohort of worms from z

Fine structure of the male reproductive system and reproductive behavior of Lutzomyia longipalpis sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

BACKGROUND: The male reproductive system of insects can have several tissues responsible for the secretion of seminal fluid proteins (SFPs), such as testes, accessory glands, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory duct and ejaculatory bulb. The SFPs are transferred during mating and can induce several physiological and behavioral changes in females, such as increase in oviposition and decrease in sexual receptivity after copulation. The phlebotomine Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of visceral leishmaniasis. Despite its medical importance, little is known about its reproductive biology. Here we

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) patient information-seeking behavior: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 13% of women in the United States of reproductive age seek infertility services. Assisted reproductive technology (ART), including in vitro fertilization, is used to help patients achieve pregnancy. Many people are not familiar with these treatments prior to becoming patients and possess knowledge gaps about care. METHODS: This study employed qualitative methods to investigate how patients interact with information sources during care. Patients who underwent ART including embryo transfer between January 2017 and April 2022 at a large urban healthcare center were elig

Female reproductive signaling, and male mating behavior, in the olive baboon.

Baboon sexual swellings are among the largest and most colorful signals displayed by any mammal, and many baboon studies have shown an association between sexual swellings and both female and male sexual behavior. However, the extent to which female behavior and sexual swellings combine to signal the timing of ovulation and the fertile period to males, and the extent to which males use these and other signals when determining patterns of mating behavior, remain key topics of research. Here we assess the social and sexual behavior of both female and male olive baboons with respect to detailed m

Age-related decline in behavior and reproductive health in male mice.

Research on reproductive advanced age has predominantly focused on women due to their biological clock. The impact of paternal senescence on fertility and offspring is still poorly understood. In this study, we characterized the effects of aging on sexual behavior and reproductive characteristics using male mice aged 4 months as a control, compared to mice aged 19 and 24 months. In the first experiment, we observed that reproductive interest and locomotor activity were reduced in older males, accompanied by reduced serum testosterone levels and testicular weight. We observed increased sperm mo

Male Armaments and Reproductive Behavior in "Nutcracker" Camel Crickets (Rhaphidophoridae, Pristoceuthophilus).

Males of many species possess striking weaponry used in intrasexual competition for access to females. Until recently, there were no known cases of male weaponry being used against females in sexual coercion. However, in the camel cricket, Pristoceuthophilus marmoratus, males use modified hind legs to fight with each other and also to trap females and force them to copulate. To determine whether hind leg armaments serve similar fighting and mating functions in morphologically similar congeners, we performed a comparative survey of armament use in intra- and inter-sexual interactions in four ad

Neural pathways mediating control of reproductive behavior in male Japanese quail.

The sexually dimorphic medial preoptic nucleus (POM) in Japanese quail has for many years been the focus of intensive investigations into its role in reproductive behavior. The present study delineates a sequence of descending pathways that finally reach sacral levels of the spinal cord housing motor neurons innervating cloacal muscles involved in reproductive behavior. We first retrogradely labeled the motor neurons innervating the large cloacal sphincter muscle (mSC) that forms part of the foam gland complex (Seiwert and Adkins-Regan [1998] Brain Behav Evol 52:61-80) and then putative premot

Hormonal integration of neurochemical and sensory signals governing female reproductive behavior.

This review focuses on findings from our laboratory regarding mechanisms by which the ovarian steroid hormones, estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P), act in the hypothalamus (HYP) to regulate the expression of lordosis, an important component of female reproductive behavior in rats and many other species. The first section summarizes recent work suggesting that cGMP, perhaps via P-receptor activation, may be an intracellular mediator of the facilitatory actions of a variety of hormones and neurotransmitters on lordosis behavior in E2-primed rats. In the second section, we focus on E2 and P regu

Reproductive functions illustrating direct and indirect effects of genes on behavior.

Effects of gene products on reproductive behavior which are relatively direct include those of the estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor. For example, work with estrogen receptor-deficient (ERKO) female mice has extended previous evidence contributing to the neurochemical analysis of lordosis behavior. On the other hand, sex differences in behavior present a classic example of indirect effects of genes on behavior. Work with ERKO male mice shows the necessity of ER gene expression for normal masculinization of the brain. In particular, behavioral assay results distinguish apparent motiva

Neural and behavioral plasticity across the female reproductive cycle.

Sex is fundamental for the evolution and survival of most species. However, sex can also pose danger, because it increases the risk of predation and disease transmission, among others. Thus, in many species, cyclic fluctuations in the concentration of sex hormones coordinate sexual receptivity and attractiveness with female reproductive capacity, promoting copulation when fertilization is possible and preventing it otherwise. In recent decades, numerous studies have reported a wide variety of sex hormone-dependent plastic rearrangements across the entire brain, including areas relevant for fem

Reproductive and Behavioral Evaluation of a New Immunocastration Dog Vaccine.

Canine immunocastration development has been of interest for many years as a complementary strategy to surgical castration. The purpose of this paper was to verify the effect of a recombinant vaccine for dog immunocastration. Two tests were done, one under controlled conditions and a second under field conditions. Animals were injected with 1 mL of 500 µg GnRXG/Q recombinant protein; 500 µg of low molecular weight chitosan as adjuvant; 1 mL NaCl 0.9% q.s. In the first trial, eight Beagle male dogs between the ages of 1 and 3 comprised the sample, randomly divided into two groups: vaccinated gr

Reproductive experience modulates dopamine-related behavioral responses.

Reproductive experience (RE), i.e., mating, pregnancy, parturition and lactation, has long-term physiological effects. It reduces the basal levels of circulating prolactin in parous women, decreases the intensity of nocturnal and diurnal prolactin surges in multigravid rats during early pregnancy, as well as the hormonal and neurochemical responses to the dopamine receptor antagonists metoclopramide and haloperidol. In the present study, we evaluated the possible influences of RE on some dopaminergic-related behaviors: (1) acute responses to a new environment represented by an open-field arena

Effects of 5-HT3 agonists on reproductive behaviors in rats.

Activity at 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptor sites influences sexual behavior in male and female rats. 5-HT3 antagonists reportedly have no effect on copulatory activity in rats of either sex although they influence a variety of other behaviors. The effects of 5-HT3 agonists on sexual behavior are unknown. The following experiments were undertaken to assess the influence of the 5-HT3 agonists 1-phenylbiguanide (PBG) and 2-methyl-serotonin (2-Me-5-HT) on sexual behavior, when administered intracerebroventricularly. Consistent with earlier reports indicating that 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptor activity influe

Social modulation of behavioral reproductive senescence in female rats.

During aging, the lordosis reflex of female rats changes from a state of cyclic lordosis, when the lordosis reflex can be elicited by manual palpation only on proestrus, to a state of constant lordosis (CL), when it can be elicited daily. Social signals from other females altered this pattern of behavioral senescence. Group living decreased the lordosis reflex intensity in both old and young rats and delayed the onset of CL. Long-term group living delayed CL until late in the life span, while temporary group living delayed it only until rats returned to isolation. Long-term group living also c
