Abnormal bleeding associated with reproductive tract infection.

Reproductive tract infection is an often unrecognized, but relatively common, cause of abnormal reproductive tract bleeding. Postcoital bleeding, menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, and oral contraceptive break-through bleeding are potentially infection-related complaints. The microorganisms most often associated with abnormal reproductive tract bleeding include: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Herpes simplex virus type 2, and microorganisms associated with bacterial vaginosis. The clinical conditions cervicitis, endometritis, and pelvic inflammatory disease and the related microorganisms

The significance and scope of reproductive tract infections among Third World women.

Due to biomedical, behavioral and societal factors, reproductive tract infections are widespread in the Third World. Without early diagnosis and accurate therapy, their complications severely compromise women's health, fertility and productivity; infant health and survival; and the effectiveness of family planning programs. Clinicians and public health planners can address these treatable syndromes through research and services in socially acceptable settings including family planning, prenatal and MCH clinics. Specific approaches are discussed.

Female reproductive tract infections: understandings and care seeking behaviour among women of reproductive age in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive tract infections (RTI's) are endemic in developing countries and entail a heavy toll on women. If untreated, RTI's can lead to adverse health outcomes such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy and increased vulnerability to transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus. It is also associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. While RTI's and its sequelae abound in Nigeria, there is paucity of publications on the subject in the country. This study assessed the understandings and care seeking behavior with regards to RTI's among women of reproductive age in Lagos, Nigeria

Vaccination to protect against infection of the female reproductive tract.

Infection of the female genital tract can result in serious morbidities and mortalities from reproductive disability, pelvic inflammatory disease and cancer, to impacts on the fetus, such as infant blindness. While therapeutic agents are available, frequent testing and treatment is required to prevent the occurrence of the severe disease sequelae. Hence, sexually transmitted infections remain a major public health burden with ongoing social and economic barriers to prevention and treatment. Unfortunately, while there are two success stories in the development of vaccines to protect against HPV

Protease production by microorganisms associated with reproductive tract infection.

Factors influencing pathogenicity of various microbes found in the female lower genital tract remain incompletely understood. Protease production by cervico/vaginal microorganisms may alter or inactivate a variety of proteins important in host defense and structural-functional integrity including collagen-containing chorioamniotic membranes and uterine cervix. Host tissues may be made more susceptible to other organisms' virulence factors by protease-producing members of genital tract local flora. Microorganisms themselves may also be influenced by the presence of other microbial protease. Non

Chlamydia psittaci infection in sheep: a paradigm for human reproductive tract infection.

Chlamydiae are important reproductive tract pathogens in a wide variety of animals. In humans, chronic or repeated infection of the female genital tract with Chlamydia trachomatis has been identified as a significant factor in the development of occlusive infertility or increased risk of ectopic pregnancy. The spectrum of reproductive disease recognized in sheep to be caused by Chlamydia psittaci has been primarily restricted to pregnant animals because the organism was clearly identified as a major cause of infectious abortion. However, following pregnancy failure, a chronic chlamydial infect
