Impacts of Residential Segregation and Comorbidity on Racial Disparities in Acute Care Utilization.

PURPOSE: To examine whether living in highly segregated communities or having comorbidity is associated with an increased risk of acute use of emergency and inpatient services (i.e., acute care utilization [ACU]) among racial minorities. METHODOLOGY: This longitudinal study included adult patients who underwent health-related social needs screening during their medical appointments within the Mass General Brigham healthcare system from March 2018 to January 2023. Our primary outcome was 180-day ACU defined as a composite outcome of all-cause emergency departments visits or hospital admissions

Residential Segregation and Colorectal Cancer Screening in the United States, 2010 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Residential segregation limits the access to resources, primarily because of disinvestment. This study evaluated the association between residential segregation and colorectal cancer screening in the United States and whether findings differed by race and ethnicity. METHODS: Restricted National Health Interview Survey data (2010-2018) were used to ascertain colorectal cancer screening adherence per US Preventive Services Task Force recommendations. Residential segregation was operationalized using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), based on income, race, and ethnici

The association between residential segregation and stillbirths in Brazil-a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Segregation is the degree to which two or more groups live separately. While US research has linked segregation to increased stillbirth risk, studies from Latin America have yet to explore this. This study investigated the association between the racial and income segregation index (SI) and stillbirth prevalence in Brazil. METHODS: We used nationwide birth data from Brazil in 2018 (live births from Live Birth Information System, SINASC, and stillbirths from Mortality Information System, SIM). Income and racial SI were calculated using the 2010 national census and analyzed as quint

The Role of Residential Segregation in Treatment and Outcomes of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ of the Breast.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether residential segregation impacts on clinical treatment and outcomes for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a nonobligate precursor to invasive breast cancer (IBC). METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study included adult non-Hispanic White and Black women diagnosed with unilateral DCIS between January 1990 and December 2015, followed through December 2016, and identified from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results dataset. County-level racialized economic segregation was measured using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes. Mul

Racial residential segregation and rates of gonorrhea in the United States, 2003-2007.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, Black persons are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including gonorrhea. Individual behaviors do not fully explain these racial disparities. We explored the association of racial residential segregation with gonorrhea rates among Black persons and hypothesized that specific dimensions of segregation would be associated with gonorrhea rates. METHODS: We used 2003 to 2007 national STI surveillance data and 2000 US Census Bureau data to examine associations of 5 dimensions of racial residential segregation and a composite mea

Historic residential segregation impacts biodiversity data availability disparately across the tree of life.

Historical residential segregation policies have left a lasting impact on urban environments, greenspaces, and wildlife communities, creating socioeconomic heterogeneity and altering biota. However, the extent to which these policies continue to impact urban biodiversity remains unclear, especially across taxonomic groups and spatial scales. We explore how sampling and biodiversity metrics (sampling density, estimated completeness of sampling, and expected species richness) across taxonomic groups vary across historically redlined neighborhoods and relative to broader urban areas. To explore t

Residential segregation, dividing walls and mental health: a population-based record linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Neighbourhood segregation has been described as a fundamental determinant of physical health, but literature on its effect on mental health is less clear. While most previous research has relied on conceptualised measures of segregation, Northern Ireland is unique as it contains physical manifestations of segregation in the form of segregation barriers (or 'peacelines') which can be used to accurately identify residential segregation. METHODS: We used population-wide health record data on over 1.3 million individuals, to analyse the effect of residential segregation, measured by b

Racial residential segregation impacts on low birth weight using improved neighborhood boundary definitions.

Research on local racial residential segregation and health generally utilize census tract boundaries as a proxy from within which to estimate individual exposures. Census tracts however, may not accurately reflect the neighborhood environments in which people live and interact. Census tract geography may also capture non-exchangeable populations in socially stratified cities, impacting statistical assumptions of independence. To address these concerns, this study assessed the impact of racial residential segregation (i.e., racial isolation and racial clusters) on low birth weight (i.e., intra

Separate and Sick: Residential Segregation and the Health of Children and Youth in Metropolitan Statistical Areas.

The purpose of this study was to better understand residential segregation and child/youth health by examining the relationship between a measure of Black-White residential segregation, the index of dissimilarity, and a suite of child and youth health measures in 235 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). MSAs are urban areas with a population of 50,000 or more and adjacent communities that share a high degree of economic and social integration. MSAs are defined by the Office of Management and Budget. Health-related measures included child mortality (CDC WONDER), teen births (NCHS natalit

Influence of residential segregation and health provider density on advanced stage endometrial cancer diagnoses.

INTRODUCTION: The influence of residential segregation and provider density on endometrial (EC) presentation is not fully known. Our objective was to determine associations between county-level obstetrics-gynecology provider density and residential segregation as measured by the Index of Concentration (ICE) at the Extremes on late-stage EC diagnoses in Florida. METHODS: All malignant EC cases were identified from 2001 to 2017 in the Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS). Using 5-year estimates from the 2013-2017 American Community Survey, five county-level ICE variables were calculated: economic

Association of Racial Residential Segregation and Other Social Determinants of Health with HIV Late Presentation.

Understanding social determinants of HIV late presentation with advanced disease (LPWA) beyond individual-level factors could help decrease LPWA and improve population-level HIV outcomes. This study aimed to examine county-level social determinants of health (SDOH) with HIV late presentation. We aggregated datasets for analysis by linking statewide HIV diagnosis data from the South Carolina (SC) Enhanced HIV/AIDS Reporting System and multiple social contextual datasets (e.g., the American Community Survey). All adult (18 years and older) people with HIV diagnosed from 2014 to 2019 in SC were i

Residential Segregation, Perceived Neighborhood Environment, and All-Cause Mortality Among Community-Dwelling Older Chinese Americans.

OBJECTIVES: Residential segregation profoundly affects mental and physical health. However, impacts of residential segregation and other neighborhood characteristics on health among older Asian Americans are not fully understood. This study aimed to close this gap by examining effects of residential segregation, perceived neighborhood cohesion, and neighborhood disorder on all-cause mortality among older Chinese immigrants, as well as testing whether the association between residential segregation and mortality would be mediated by perceived neighborhood cohesion and neighborhood disorder. Ride-hailing technology mitigates effects of driver racial discrimination, but effects of residential segregation persist.

We assess racial disparities in the service quality of app-based ride-hailing services, like Uber and Lyft, by simulating their operations in the city of Chicago using empirical data. To generate driver cancellation rate disparities consistent with controlled experiments (up to twice as large for Black riders as for White riders), we estimate that more than 3% of drivers discriminate by race. We find that the capabilities of ride-hailing technology to rapidly rematch after a cancellation and prioritize long-waiting customers heavily mitigates the effects of driver discrimination on rider wait

Sleep disorder and residential segregation in Cleveland, Ohio: analysis of the index of concentration at the extremes (ICE).

Residential segregation is a fundamental structural determinant of health that generates social and spatial inequalities, yet its relationship with clinically diagnosed sleep disorders remains poorly understood. This study examined the association between neighborhood residential segregation and clinically diagnosed sleep disorders among 165,669 individuals residing in 265 census tracts in Cleveland, Ohio. Residential segregation was measured using the Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE), which captures racial segregation (ICE-Race), income segregation (ICE-Income), and racialized eco

Effects of socioeconomic and racial residential segregation on preterm birth: a cautionary tale of structural confounding.

Confounding associated with social stratification or other selection processes has been called structural confounding. In the presence of structural confounding, certain covariate strata will contain only subjects who could never be exposed, a violation of the positivity or experimental treatment effect assumption. Thus, structural confounding can prohibit the exchangeability necessary for meaningful causal contrasts across levels of exposure. The authors explored the presence and magnitude of structural confounding by estimating the independent effects of neighborhood deprivation and neighbor

Racial residential segregation, racial discrimination, and diabetes: The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study.

Although racial residential segregation and interpersonal racial discrimination are associated with cardiovascular disease, few studies have examined their link with diabetes risk or management. We used longitudinal data from 2,175 black participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study to examine associations of racial residential segregation (Gi* statistic) and experiences of racial discrimination with diabetes incidence and management. Multivariable Cox models estimated associations for incident diabetes and GEE logistic regression estimated associations wi
