Psychoanalysis and the early beginnings of residential treatment for troubled youth.

One of the intentions of Aichhom, Redl, Wineman, Bettelheim, and Anna Freud in their writings about group care was to advocate for the need to simplify the lives of youths who had known only chaos, to create an atmosphere in which everything has a purpose and predictable positive responses were given unconditionally. Recent efforts, such as those by Greenberg et at, have focused on building community-wide early interventions to forestall later emergence of emotional or behavioral disorders. The efforts also mark a shift away from punishment and exclusion for troubled children at school to more

Overview of the treatment of rumination disorder for adults in a residential setting.

Rumination, or the chewing and re-swallowing of regurgitated stomach contents, can be found in up to 10% of institutionalized individuals with severe or profound mental retardation. Serious physical consequences, including death, can result from the disorder. Unfortunately, rumination can be subtle and difficult to observe and often continues untreated. Additionally, the research literature has provided divergent results without clear treatment guidance for clinicians. We present an overview of the history of rumination, a review of the literature on its etiology and treatment, and recommendat

Gambling-Related Cognitive Distortions in Residential Treatment for Gambling Disorder.

Gambling-related cognitive distortions are associated with gambling disorder severity, but few studies have provided an in-depth examination of the interrelationship between cognitive distortions, gambling severity, psychiatric comorbidity and treatment outcomes. The present study sought to identify factors associated with elevated cognitive distortions among problem gamblers entering residential treatment, examine changes in cognitive distortions through treatment, and explore the association between cognitive distortions and treatment outcomes. Pre- and post-treatment data were extracted fro

Aftercare attendance and post-treatment functioning of severely substance dependent residential treatment clients.

The present study evaluated the impact of a structured aftercare programme following residential treatment for severe alcohol and/or heroin dependent clients. Over 17 months, 77 participants were recruited to the study and allocated randomly to either a structured aftercare (SA) programme or to unstructured aftercare (UA) of crisis counselling on request. Independent clinicians interviewed participants and collaterals, at 4-month (median) intervals, for 12 months following residential treatment. SA compared to UA was associated with a fourfold increase in aftercare attendance and one-third the

Young cannabis users in residential treatment: as distressed as other clients.

Doubt remains about the need for residential substance user treatment for young cannabis users. Using a series of validated clinical tools, this study compared 1,221 primarily cannabis-, psychostimulant-, alcohol-, or opioid-dependent young people admitted to an urban/rural Australian residential treatment program between 2001 and 2007. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that the cannabis user group had poorer mental health than the opioid group, poorer social functioning than the alcohol drinking group, and comparably poor functioning otherwise but remained in treatment longer than the

Readmission of children in foster care to psychiatric residential treatment facilities.

Psychiatric residential treatment facilities (PRTFs) serve as nonhospital inpatient treatment environments for Medicaid beneficiaries under the age of 21. Children in foster care, as a group, exhibit a heightened need for mental health services and are disproportionately represented in residential treatment settings. Despite their high cost and restrictive nature, PRTFs offer a comprehensive approach that facilitates assessment, treatment, discharge planning, and aftercare. Readmission to PRTFs is an unfavorable utilization outcome that may reflect multiple mechanisms, including unmet clinical

Outcomes and moderators of shame in residential treatment for eating disorders in females.

Shame is a painful, self-conscious emotion that is implicated in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders. However, there is a dearth of research examining shame outcomes in clinically acute eating disorder samples. The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcomes and moderators of internal shame in female (adolescent and adult) residential patients diagnosed with a range of eating disorders. Participants (N = 176) were attending residential eating disorder treatment for eating disorders and were assessed for internal shame, self-esteem, eating disorder diagnosis, duration of

Factors associated with residential placement in an assertive community treatment program.

Assertive community treatment (ACT) programs originated to meet the needs of the severely mentally ill (SMI) for multiple psychosocial supports necessary for community living. Housing has been prominent among these needs and research to date on ACT programs has addressed residential outcomes, principally reduced homelessness and maintenance in some form of stable housing. However, limited studies have examined variables that might predict particular types of residential placements, which range from unsupervised to highly structured environments. The purpose of this study was to identify factor

Bolstering family therapy: Assimilating EMDR into ABFT in youth residential treatment.

The psychotherapy field has a long history of integration to improve treatment effectiveness. One type, assimilative integration, offers innovative opportunities to family therapy to incorporate the clinical and research contributions of different approaches. This paper contributes to the literature on integration by exploring how Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can be assimilated into Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT) for youth in residential psychiatric treatment. ABFT seeks to improve attachment security to parental figures by asking adolescents and young adults to

Alternative model of personality disorders traits predict residential addictions treatment completion.

BACKGROUND: Among people receiving residential treatment for a substance use disorder (SUD), premature treatment termination predicts poor post-treatment outcomes. We examined the utility of the alternative model for personality disorders (AMPD) for predicting premature residential SUD treatment termination, including interactions with age and gender. METHODS: Participants (N = 374) were receiving residential treatment for SUD and enrolled in a clinical trial with two conditions: Skills for Improving Distress Intolerance (SIDI) and Supportive Counseling (NCT01741415). Disordered gambling in residential substance use treatment centers: an unmet need.

This study examined prevalence and potential impact of disordered gambling in a sample of individuals (N = 684) undergoing residential treatment for substance use disorders at 13 facilities. Lifetime disordered gambling prevalence was 20.2%, as identified by South Oaks Gambling Screen. Within individuals who screened positive for disordered gambling, few had sought help for gambling (15.9%) and only 14.3% reported having gambling addressed in their current substance use disorder treatment. Meanwhile, 30.4% identified gambling as a concern in their recovery efforts. The presence of a gambling p
