Identifying psychological risk and resilience in high-risk military personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Combat exposure has been associated with the emergence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in military personnel; however, not all veterans are negatively impacted by their operational experience. In many instances, the absence of symptoms following operational service is attributed to resilience. This study explored the construct of resilience by examining the relationship between levels of deployment-related exposures and psychological symptoms, as well as identifying factors that may contribute to resilience and emerging risk. METHOD: Participants were special f

Predictors of psychological risk and resilience among Syrian refugee children.

OBJECTIVES: War-exposed refugee children are at elevated risk for mental health problems, but a notable proportion appear resilient. We aimed to investigate the proportion of Syrian refugee children who can be considered resilient, and applied a novel approach to identify factors predicting individual differences in mental health outcomes following war exposure. METHODS: The sample included 1,528 war-exposed Syrian refugee children and their primary caregiver living in refugee settlements in Lebanon. Children were classed as having low symptoms (LS) if they scored below clinically validated c

Effects of parental burnout and psychological intrusion on adolescent resilience.

Parental burnout is a parenting-specific syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, loss of fulfillment, and emotional distancing. Although its impact on externalizing outcomes such as neglect and hostility has been documented, less is known about its implications for adolescents’ internalizing difficulties. Drawing on dyadic reports from 2,236 Chinese parent–adolescent pairs, the present study tested whether parental burnout is associated with adolescents’ internalizing problems through psychologically controlling parenting, and whether adolescents’ psychological capital (PsyCap)—a highe

Academic performance in children of divorce: psychological resilience and vulnerability.

Parental divorce can be conceptualized as a stressful event for all children, but one must recognize that reactions to divorce can vary widely among children. This investigation was based on two basic ideas: 1) children of divorce as a group would show deficits in academic performance compared to children from intact families, even several years after their parents' separation, and 2) because factors that promote psychological resilience and vulnerability, we expected to find normal heterogeneity within the divorce sample. Among 96 middle-school adolescents from a suburban school district near

Dominant depressive temperament and psychological resilience in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptom severity and psychological resilience within the framework of dominant depressive temperament (DDT). METHODS: A total of 129 patients with OCD were assessed using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), and the TEMPS-A questionnaire for temperament evaluation. Participants were classified as having DDT based on both established cut-off scores and standardized z-scores for the depressive subscale. Depression and anxiety levels were measured with

Recover from the adversity: functional connectivity basis of psychological resilience.

Psychological resilience refers to the ability that individuals can positively adapt and respond to stress and adversity. It is important for mental health and well-being. However, there was few study examined the functional connectivity basis of psychological resilience. The present study used resting-state seed-based functional connectivity to explore the neural basis of psychological resilience and its association with positive affect in a big healthy sample. Results showed that resilience is associated with functional connectivity between regions involved in emotional flexibility, coping a

Psychological resilience and psychological status among community-dwelling older adults: a cross-sectional study in China.

INTRODUCTION: In aging societies, promoting psychological well-being among older adults is crucial. While psychological resilience is known to benefit mental health, less is understood about how external resources-specifically cultural and environmental resilience-influence psychological status (life satisfaction and depression) via resilience pathways in older populations. This study investigated these associations and their cross-sectional indirect associations through psychological resilience. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 508 community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 in We

Mindfulness, psychological resilience, and cognitive reappraisal on athletic performance: a predictive model based on psychological mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness is increasingly viewed as a psychological resource for athletic performance, yet the sequential mechanism through which mindful awareness is translated into performance through cognitive reappraisal and psychological resilience remains insufficiently examined. This study constructed and tested a predictive model linking mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, psychological resilience, and perceived athletic performance among competitive university athletes. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with 482 competitive university athletes recruited from

Psychological resilience is protective against cognitive deterioration in motor neuron diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies suggest that psychological resilience (PR) is associated with more well-preserved cognition in healthy subjects (HS), but an investigation of such phenomenon in patients with motor neuron diseases (MNDs) is still lacking. The aim of our study was therefore to evaluate PR and its relationship with baseline cognitive/behavioral and mood symptoms, as well as longitudinal cognitive functioning, in MNDs. METHODS: 94 MND patients and 87 demographically matched HS were enrolled. PR was assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Patients were further eva

Network connectivity between psychological resilience and depression in prostate cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: Prostate cancer (PCa) patients often experience depression. One possible buffer against stress-related depression is psychological resilience (PR), which has been described as heterogeneous in structure, like major depressive disorder (MDD). Although both of these constructs are central to understanding and assisting distressed PCa patients, no data have been reported on how they connect via network arrays at a component and symptom level. Such information has the potential to inform clinical practice with depressed PCa patients. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, 555 PCa pa

Resilience Phenotypes and Psychological Functioning among Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a heterogeneous disorder. However, there is a lack of deep phenotyping investigations focusing on important psychological constructs such as resilience that may impact OUD. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between trait resilience and the five-factor model of personality (FFM) among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). We also explored whether the FFM and trait resilience form specific phenotypes associated with psychological functioning. METHODS: This secondary analysis of an epigenetic study included participants of Afri

Childhood adversity and adult depression: The protective role of psychological resilience.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as childhood abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, have been identified as salient risk factors for adult depression. However, not all individuals who experience ACEs go on to develop depression. The extent to which resilience- or the ability to demonstrate stable levels of functioning despite adversity- may act as a buffer against depression among individuals with a history of ACEs has not been adequately examined. To address the associations between ACEs, depression, and resilience, 4006 adult participants were recruited from primary care clini

Exploring the psychological construct of resilience in kidney transplantation: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Extensive literature has highlighted the psychological burden experienced by kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) and its association with adverse outcomes. Psychological resilience can serve as a measure of baseline vulnerability, and low resilience is associated with poor mental health. We aimed to synthesize the existing literature that has explored the concept of resilience in kidney transplantation. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted due to the anticipated heterogeneity of the literature. Any empirical study that measured resilience using a validated tool in KTRs was incl

Psychological and Neurophysiological Screening Investigation of the Collective and Personal Stress Resilience.

Methodological approaches to assess the human cognitive status are constantly evolving. At the same time, the creation of new assessment methods is accompanied by traditional research. This paper discusses the direction of research on the search for markers of stress resilience. The basis for the formation of the research algorithm was the assessment of activation factors of emotional states, including preceding stress-sensory (cognitive and informational) and psycho-emotional factors. This was determined using methodological techniques, stress factors, working conditions in professional teams
