Hypersensitivity to dipyrone in aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease patients is associated with urticaria.

OBJECTIVE: To phenotype patients with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) according to the presence of atopy, urticaria and level of peripheral eosinophils. METHODS: This study included adult asthmatic patients with AERD followed up at a tertiary hospital. They were classified according to atopy and/or urticaria, assessing clinical and laboratorial differences among the groups in order to identify possible aggravating factors of the disease. RESULTS: We included 73 patients, 78.1% being female with a mean age of 54.0 years. Severe asthma was observed in 68.5% and respiratory exace

Respiratory hypersensitivity to trimellitic anhydride in Brown Norway rats: a comparison of endpoints.

A rat bioassay has been developed to provide an objective approach for the identification and classification of respiratory allergy using trimellitic anhydride (TMA), which is a known respiratory tract irritant and asthmagen. Particular emphasis was placed on the study of route-of-induction-dependent effects and their progression upon inhalation challenge with TMA (approximately 23 mg m(-3) for a duration of 30 min), which included analysis of specific and non-specific airway hyperreactivity and pulmonary inflammation initiated and sustained by immunological processes. Refinement of the bioass

Hypersensitivity of morphine-tolerant rabbits to the respiratory stimulant effect of a cholinergic agonist.

The effect of morphine and oxotremorine, a centrally acting cholinergic agonist on the respiratory rate and arterial blood gases, was studied in rabbits given saline, increasing doses of morphine (5 mg/kg, 2 days; 10 mg/kg, 2 days; and 20 mg/kg, 3 days) injected at 12-hr intervals for 1 week. Care was taken to ensure that the chronically morphine-treated rabbits were neither under the influence of a previous dose of morphine nor in a phase of withdrawal when the response to test doses was measured. Tolerance to the respiratory depressant effect of morphine was demonstrated by the finding that

Toxicities of opioid analgesics: respiratory depression, histamine release, hemodynamic changes, hypersensitivity, serotonin toxicity.

Opioid-induced respiratory depression is potentially life-threatening and often regarded as the main hazard of opioid use. Main cause of death is cardiorespiratory arrest with hypoxia and hypercapnia. Respiratory depression is mediated by opioid μ receptors expressed on respiratory neurons in the CNS. Studies on the major sites in the brainstem mediating respiratory rate suppression, the pre-Bӧtzinger complex and parabrachial complex (including the Kӧlliker Fuse nucleus), have yielded conflicting findings and interpretations but recent investigations involving deletion of μ receptors from neur

Cross-reactivity between halogenated platinum salts in an immediate-type respiratory hypersensitivity model.

Halogenated platinum salts can trigger the development of occupational asthma. Until recently, laboratory research into the development and manifestation of platinum hypersensitivity responses were hindered by the lack of an animal model suitable for assessing the functional consequences of allergic sensitization. We employed a newly developed mouse model to assess the potential allergenicity of ammonium tetrachloroplatinate (ATCP), compare the relative potency of ATCP and another platinum salt, ammonium hexachloroplatinate (AHCP) and assess potential cross-reactivity. Mice were topically sens

Neural dysfunction following respiratory viral infection as a cause of chronic cough hypersensitivity.

Respiratory viral infections are a common cause of acute coughing, an irritating symptom for the patient and an important mechanism of transmission for the virus. Although poorly described, the inflammatory consequences of infection likely induce coughing by chemical (inflammatory mediator) or mechanical (mucous) activation of the cough-evoking sensory nerves that innervate the airway wall. For some individuals, acute cough can evolve into a chronic condition, in which cough and aberrant airway sensations long outlast the initial viral infection. This suggests that some viruses have the capaci

Severe respiratory symptoms to oxaliplatin infusion: a case report of delayed hypersensitivity reaction.

A 46-year-old man with adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon developed a hypersensitivity reaction after the sixth cycle of combination chemotherapy with oxaliplatin infusion. Hypersensitivity to oxaliplatin occurring, after several courses of therapy, in about 10-15% of patients, especially during or immediately after the oxaliplatin infusion. In this case report we present a delayed hypersensitivity reaction, consisting in dysesthesia and laryngeal spasm developed 10 h after the sixth administration of oxaliplatin.

Laryngeal hypersensitivity in the World Trade Center-exposed population: the role for respiratory retraining.

Upper airway symptoms among responders to the terrorist attack on 9/11 are progressive and multifactorial. For those symptoms that are laryngeal in origin, we are using a multidisciplinary approach that includes respiratory retraining and laryngeal desensitization through a speech pathologist trained in airway disorders. Our treatment paradigm and laryngeal hypersensitivity are discussed in this essay.

Acute respiratory failure as a rare presentation of non-fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis: Case series.

RATIONALE: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an increasingly recognized interstitial lung disease caused by exposure to inhaled, mostly organic, antigens. The non-fibrotic type of HP generally follows a benign course. We present 3 patients with a rare presentation of non-fibrotic HP-acute respiratory failure. PATIENT CONCERNS: 2 females and 1 male, presented to the pulmonary department due to resting dyspnea, cough and low-grade fever. Arterial blood gases revealed profound hypoxemia. No relevant abnormalities were found in the blood tests. In high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), si

Acute Respiratory Failure of Unknown Etiology After Charcoal-Burning Suicide Attempt: Suspected Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis.

We report a case of a 25-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with respiratory distress after attempting suicide using burning charcoal briquettes. Charcoal briquette suicide is a method of suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning through inhalation of carbon monoxide produced when charcoal briquettes are burned. The patient had a history of childhood asthma, but he was not on any scheduled treatment regimen. Upon admission, he had an elevated respiratory rate, hypoxic respiratory failure, and bilateral respiratory wheezing. Computed tomography showed significant mottled and infi

[A case of summer type hypersensitivity pneumonitis resulting in chronic respiratory failure and cor pulmonale].

A female case of Japanese summer-type hypersensitivity pneumonitis who was a smoker developed in chronic respiratory failure several years later. Biopsy specimen on first admission showed findings of granulomatous bronchioloalveolitis distributed in the center of secondary lobules. Pulmonary function studies demonstrated restrictive disease with high RV% and low airway conductance. In spite of steroid therapy, dyspnea persisted and the same symptoms were found on next summer. Six years later symptoms of chronic respiratory failure and cor pulmonale developed. Chest X-Ray showed dilated pulmona

Immunotoxicologic evaluation of the respiratory system: animal models for immediate- and delayed-onset pulmonary hypersensitivity.

A wide variety of industrial materials is known to cause allergic pulmonary reactions. Respiratory symptoms may occur either immediately upon exposure to the agent (immediate-onset response), or several hours later (delayed-onset reaction). In order to determine both the mechanism of response, and a safe exposure level which would prevent development of pulmonary sensitization, animal models are currently being developed for both types of sensitivity responses. In the models, emphasis is placed on simulating conditions present in the industrial environment. For example, (1) exposure to agents

Standard pulmonary function tests and respiratory oscillometry patterns in hypersensitivity pneumonitis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an interstitial lung disease (ILD) caused by repeated exposure to inhaled antigens, leading to small airway and parenchymal inflammation. Diagnosis is based on a detailed clinical history, chest imaging and invasive tests such as bronchoalveolar lavage. Distinguishing HP from other ILDs is challenging. Respiratory oscillometry, a novel pulmonary function test (PFT), is highly sensitive to small airway abnormalities. Oscillometry measurement of reactance is strongly correlated with gender-age-physiology score, a prognostic tool used to predict mo

Respiratory hypersensitivity to trimellitic anhydride in Brown Norway rats: evidence for different activation pattern of immune cells following topical and respiratory induction.

The elicitation of respiratory allergy in animal models is exquisitely complex and interpretation of results from different laboratories cannot readily be compared due to variability in testing protocols, biomarkers and techniques used to identify 'positive' responses. On the one hand, guinea-pigs have been proposed as a good model with which to study allergic and irritant bronchial hyperresponsiveness. On the other hand, considerable efforts have been made to develop animal models that take the immunological mechanisms into account to reduce the complexity as well as duration of the guinea-pi

Respiratory hypersensitivity reactions to NSAIDs in Europe: the global allergy and asthma network (GA2 LEN) survey.

BACKGROUND: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most prevalent drugs inducing hypersensitivity reactions. The aim of this analysis was to estimate the prevalence of NSAID-induced respiratory symptoms in population across Europe and to assess its association with upper and lower respiratory tract disorders. METHODS: The GA2 LEN survey was conducted in 22 centers in 15 European countries. Each of 19 centers selected random samples of 5000 adults aged 15-74 from their general population, and in three centers (Athens, Munich, Oslo), a younger population was sampled. Questi

A hypersensitive neuromorphic airflow sensor inspired by vision-compensatory scorpion mechanoreceptors for respiratory pattern analysis.

Efficient acquisition of spatial airflow information is vital for organisms to orient within complex environments and detect predators. For scorpions with degraded vision, specialized mechanosensory trichobothria provide a crucial vision-compensatory mechanism, enabling hypersensitive perception of subtle airflow fluctuations. Inspired by this evolutionary adaptation, we present a biomimetic neuromorphic airflow sensor (BNAS) integrating a bioinspired lever-amplification structure with a pressure-induced ionic enrichment mechanism. This synergistic design inherits the hypersensitive anemosensa
