Breathing patterns and associated cardiovascular changes in intermittently breathing animals: (Partially) correcting a semantic quagmire.

Many animal species do not breathe in a continuous, rhythmic fashion, but rather display a variety of breathing patterns characterized by prolonged periods between breaths (inter-breath intervals), during which the heart continues to beat. Examples of intermittent breathing abound across the animal kingdom, from crustaceans to cetaceans. With respect to human physiology, intermittent breathing-also termed 'periodic' or 'episodic' breathing-is associated with a variety of pathologies. Cardiovascular phenomena associated with intermittent breathing in diving species have been termed 'diving brad

Intermittent hypoxia and respiratory plasticity in humans and other animals: does exposure to intermittent hypoxia promote or mitigate sleep apnoea?

This review focuses on two phenomena that are initiated during and after exposure to intermittent hypoxia. The two phenomena are referred to as long-term facilitation and progressive augmentation of respiratory motor output. Both phenomena are forms of respiratory plasticity. Long-term facilitation is characterized by a sustained elevation in respiratory activity after exposure to intermittent hypoxia. Progressive augmentation is characterized by a gradual increase in respiratory activity from the initial to the final hypoxic exposure. There is much speculation that long-term facilitation may

Age-related physiological changes and their clinical significance.

Physiological changes occur with aging in all organ systems. The cardiac output decreases, blood pressure increases and arteriosclerosis develops. The lungs show impaired gas exchange, a decrease in vital capacity and slower expiratory flow rates. The creatinine clearance decreases with age although the serum creatinine level remains relatively constant due to a proportionate age-related decrease in creatinine production. Functional changes, largely related to altered motility patterns, occur in the gastrointestinal system with senescence, and atrophic gastritis and altered hepatic drug metabo

AAEM minimonograph #40: clinical neurophysiology of the respiratory system.

Disorders of nerve and muscle are frequent causes of respiratory insufficiency, but current methods often fail to adequately assess the problem. Phrenic nerve conduction and needle electromyography of the diaphragm are of great assistance in identifying the nature and site of the disorder: the various disturbances of central drive, axonal or demyelinating neuropathies of the phrenic nerves, and certain myopathies. These studies may be performed on adults, children, or infants, and in outpatient, general ward, or critical care settings. It is hoped these techniques will stimulate further develo

Neuroimmune interactions in the airways: implications for asthma, allergy, and other inflammatory airway diseases.

Recent evidence suggests that several bioactive polypeptides, among them substance P, neurokinin A, and calcitonin gene-related peptide, are contained in tracheobronchial C-fibers. These peptides can be released from the lung by irritant chemicals or local inflammatory mediators like histamine or bradykinin. Substance P mimics the increase in vascular permeability caused by vagal nerve stimulation and neurokinin A mimics noncholinergic bronchoconstriction by vagal nerve stimulation. Calcitonin gene-related peptide displays vasodilator activity. Experiments carried out with sensitized guinea pi

Pivotal debates and controversies on the structure and function of the avian respiratory system: setting the record straight.

Among the extant air-breathing vertebrates, the avian respiratory system is structurally the most complex and functionally the most efficient gas exchanger. Having been investigated for over four centuries, some aspects of its biology have been extremely challenging and highly contentious and others still remain unresolved. Here, while assessing the most recent findings, four notable aspects of the structure and function of the avian respiratory system are examined critically to highlight the questions, speculations, controversies and debates that have arisen from past research. The innovative

Sex, hormones, and stress: how they impact development and function of the carotid bodies and related reflexes.

Progesterone and corticosterone are key modulators of the respiratory control system. While progesterone is widely recognized as an important respiratory stimulant in adult and newborn animals, much remains to be described regarding the underlying mechanisms. We review the potential implication of nuclear and membrane progesterone receptors in adults and in newborns. This raises intriguing questions regarding the contribution of progesterone as a protective factor against some respiratory control disorders during early life. We then discuss our current understanding of the central integration

Some functional mechanical implications of the structural design of the respiratory system in newborn mammals.

A high chest wall/lung compliance ratio is an obligatory structural requirement in the newborn. A flexible chest wall is an essential prerequisite for the delivery through the birth canal, and relatively stiff lungs result from the presence of the fluid in the interstitium. A high compliance yields a long time constant, which may help in raising the end expiratory level, an important functional priority in the neonatal respiration. It is likely, however, that the goal of maintaining a high mean lung volume is mainly achieved through closure of the glottis and/or inspiratory muscle activity dur

Respirometry: anhydrous drierite equilibrates with carbon dioxide and increases washout times.

Respirometry is a standard technique in comparative physiology laboratories, with measurements of rates of O(2) consumption and CO(2) production available for hundreds of species. A common recommendation when carrying out respirometry is that water vapor be removed from the air stream before entering the analyzer. Often, this is accomplished with the use of chemical desiccants, such as Drierite. However, here we show that Drierite has an affinity for CO(2) when new and completely anhydrous, and therefore it has an adverse effect on the washout characteristics of this gas. Exposing the Drierite

Supramedullary influences on cough.

The evidence for supramedullary influences on cough is largely indirect. Cough can be voluntarily induced or inhibited, functions usually thought to reside in the cerebral cortex. A sensation of 'urge-to-cough' usually precedes cough due to an airway irritant stimulus, and this may well involve the cerebral cortex. In conditions with interruption of the pathways between the cortex and the brainstem, such as strokes and Parkinson's disease, voluntary cough may be inhibited without disruption of reflex cough from the larynx or lower airways. 'Habit cough', like Tourette's syndrome, is assumed to

[Anatomic and physiologic features of upper airways in children].

Anatomy of the upper aerodigestive tract in neonates and young children depends on the craniofacial growth. Skull base forms an horizontal line at birth. This line becomes concave inferiorly during the growth. This feature explains the high position of the larynx and its close proximity with the inferior edge of the soft palate. This gives a medial nasopharyngolaryngeal airway and two lateral digestive oropharyngeal ways. During the first years young children have a predominant nasal breath. Knowledge of the position, the conformation and the axial inferior and anterior obliquity of the larynx

Sleep networks and the anatomic and physiologic connections with respiratory control.

A central neuronal network regulates airway functions from the nares to the bronchioles and is an integral component of a regulatory system for brain control of breathing and airway patency during wakefulness and sleep. This network, components of which include sleep generating sites and monoaminergic neurons in particular, is characterized by reciprocal interconnections, parallel organization, and state-dependent activity patterns, which can be influenced by both genes and environment. Sleep generating neurons are interconnected with the monoaminergic containing cells to the extent that sleep

[The characteristics of the morphofunctional status of 15- to 17-year-old youths based on a comprehensive assessment of the rates of their biological development].

There were studied individual typological peculiarities of the genesis of the genesis of 15-17 years old boys, the state of their respiration and their heart activities. According to these experiments there was stated the possibility of the complex appreciation of the biological tempos of genesis of the senior grades' pupils on the bases of physical and somatic genesis and sexual maturity. As a result of such differentiation of 15-17 year old boys there will appear 3 typological groups--fast, normal and slow types of genesis which quite differ by the majority of grades. Besides these 3 groups

Linking structure and function in the vertebrate respiratory system: A tribute to August Krogh.

High rates of pulmonary gas exchange require three things: 1) that gases at the contact surface of the lung's capillaries are replenished rapidly from the environment; 2) that this surface is large and thin; 3) that the capillaries are effectively perfused with blood. In spite of this uniform requirement, lungs have evolved complex and highly diverse architectures, but we have a poor understanding of the drivers of this diversity. Here, I briefly discuss some of the diversity in gross anatomical features directing airflow in avian and non-avian reptiles. I also review new insights into the cel
