During the first day in space the rhesus monkey, called Vernyi, flown on Cosmos-1667 showed higher values of the daytime, night, and daily respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) when compared to those observed before launch and before or the first day of a simulation study. During orbital flight, the mean daily value of RSA was in the range 13.08-16.00 beats/min. In the simulation study, this parameter increased from 4.68 beats/min during the first day to 15.16 beats/min on the 6th day. The mean RSA values during days 1 through 3 were significantly higher in real than in simulation flight. Analysi

Temporal cardiac properties provide alternative information in analyzing heart rate variability (HRV), which may be disregarded by the standard HRV analyses. Patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) are known to have distinct temporal features from the healthy individuals. However, the underlying mechanism leading to the variation remains unclear. Whether or not these parameters can finely classify the severity for CHF patients is uncertain as well. In this work, an electrocardiogram was monitored in advanced CHF patients using 24-h Holter in four conditions, including baseline, one and th

Emerging evidence suggests that high resting heart rate variability in the respiratory frequency band, or respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) may capture individual differences in the capacity to engage in situationally appropriate regulation of affect and behavior. The authors therefore hypothesized that high RSA may act as a protective factor against difficulties controlling negative affect and hostile behaviors in conflicts with romantic partners in highly rejection-sensitive individuals--a population otherwise vulnerable to these responses. Results were consistent with this hypothesis such

In this study we sought to investigate parasympathetic activity among children with severe cyanotic breath-holding spells by examining respiratory sinus arrhythmia. The study sample was composed of two groups of patients, 16 subjects with cyanotic breath-holding spells (5 male, 11 female; mean age, 37.5 mo) and 17 controls (8 male, 9 female; mean age, 37.7 mo). Each subject's electrocardiogram was recorded in a quiet room and digitized by an 80386 personal computer during five 1-minute periods. R-R intervals within each 1-minute period were converted to heart rate in 120 successive 0.5 second

Among the many factors that influence the cardiovascular adjustments of marine mammals is the act of respiration at the surface, which facilitates rapid gas exchange and tissue re-perfusion between dives. We measured heart rate (fH) in six adult male bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) spontaneously breathing at the surface to quantify the relationship between respiration and fH, and compared this with fH during submerged breath-holds. We found that dolphins exhibit a pronounced respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) during surface breathing, resulting in a rapid increase in fH after a breath

Low resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and to a lesser extent excessive RSA reactivity to emotion evocation, are observed in many psychiatric disorders characterized by emotion dysregulation, including syndromes spanning the internalizing and externalizing spectra, and other conditions such as nonsuicidal self-injury. Nevertheless, some inconsistencies exist. For example, null outcomes in studies of RSA-emotion dysregulation relations are sometimes observed among younger participants. Such findings may derive from use of age inappropriate frequency bands in calculating RSA. We combine

In the past two decades, respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA)-an index of parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)-mediated cardiac control-has emerged as a reliable peripheral biomarker of emotion regulation (ER). Reduced RSA and excessive RSA reactivity (i.e., withdrawal) to emotional challenge are observed consistently among individuals with poor ER capabilities, including those with various forms of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology, and those with specific psychopathological syndromes, including anxiety, phobias, attention problems, autism, callousness, conduct disorder, depressio

Linchpin to the entire area of psychophysiological research and discussion of the vagus is the respiratory and cardiovascular phenomenon known as respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA; often synonymous with high-frequency heart-rate variability when it is specifically linked to respiratory frequency), i.e. rhythmic fluctuations in heart rate synchronized to inspiration and expiration. This article aims 1) to clarify concepts, terms and measures commonly employed during the last half century in the scientific literature, which relate vagal function to psychological processes and general aspects of

PURPOSE: Hypercapnia increases minute ventilation (V’E) with little effect on heart rate (HR), whereas hypoxia may increase HR without affecting V’E. However, the effects of hypercapnia and hypoxia on both heart rate variability(HRV) and the clustering of heart beats during spontaneous breathing (respiratory sinus arrhythmia – RSA), are not clear.
METHODS: In this study, 10 human volunteers breathed room air (RA), hypercapnic (5% CO2) or hypoxic (10%O2) gas mixtures, each for 6 min, while resting supine. ECG, mean arterial pressure (MAP), ventilatory flow, inhaled and exhaled fractions of CO2

The autonomic nervous system, in particular vagal function, plays an important role in a wide range of somatic and mental disorders. Cardiac vagal function can be indexed by the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) - oscillations in heart rate linked to respiration mediated predominantly by fluctuations of vagus nerve efferent traffic originating in the nucleus ambiguus. Moreover, the neurocardiac vagal modulation has been shown to be related to physiological adaptability/flexibity and emotional regulation. Thus, greater vagal withdrawal during stressors and subsequent recovery should be indicat

Although social support is related to better health, research is mixed regarding how social support relates to physiological systems including the parasympathetic nervous system. The present study assessed whether perceived parental and friend support were related to resting parasympathetic nervous system activity among young adults, and whether associations differed by stress. Young adults (N = 154; Mage = 20.5, SD = 3.0; 73.4% female) reported their perceived support from their parents and friends. Electrocardiogram data were collected while participants watched a 4-minute nature video to es

Socioemotional skills are essential for healthy development, shaping emotional health, interpersonal functioning, and long-term academic success. Disruptions in socioemotional development can emerge as early as infancy and may have lasting consequences. This study examined how prenatal maternal emotion dysregulation, assessed via self-report and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), related to toddler socioemotional outcomes at 18 months, and whether maternal mindfulness, measured via everyday mindful attention and awareness, moderated these associations. Participants were 385 mother-toddler dya

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is an acceleration of heart rate during inspiration and deceleration with expiration. We asked whether or not in humans some of the volume-related information necessary for RSA originated from the chest wall. Men and women, 19-20 years old, were breathing supine. Rib cage and abdomen displacement provided an index of tidal volume (VT) and RSA was computed breath-by-breath from the peak and trough of instantaneous heart rate. First, measurements were taken during breathing at rest (protocol a, 129 male and 164 female). Then, in subgroups of the original subjec

OBJECTIVES: To assess the cardiac autonomic control at rest and during the deep breathing test (DBT) and its association with pain in women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS).
METHODS: The study included 20 women with FMS and 20 healthy women (control group, CG). The pain was quantified by assessing the pressure pain threshold (PPT), VAS of pain, and the pain component of the SF-36 questionnaire. The RR intervals were recorded in the supine position and during the DBT. The heart rate variability (VHR) was measured by methods in the time and frequency domain.
RESULTS: The group with FMS had abn

Self-regulation is an essential aspect of healthy child development. Even though infants depend on their caregivers for co-regulation during the first years, they begin to gain regulatory abilities through social interactions as well as their own developing agency and inhibitory control. These early regulatory abilities continue to increase with the development of both the prefrontal cortex and the vagal system. Importantly, theoretical accounts have suggested that the prefrontal cortex and the vagal system are linked through forward and backward feedback loops via the limbic system. Decreased

Otitis media (OM)-or middle-ear inflammation-is the most widely diagnosed childhood illness, with evidence implicating OM in a range of distal problems (e.g., language delays, attention problems). Polyvagal theory (Porges, 1995, 2007) posits that there also are likely important connections between middle-ear functioning and children's developing parasympathetic nervous systems (PNS). Using prospective longitudinal data from the Family Life Project (n = 748), we tested within- and between-person relations between indicators of OM (middle-ear spectral gradient angle; SGA) and children's trajecto

Recent accounts of problematic electronic gaming machine (EGM) gambling have suggested attentional pathology among at-risk players. A putative slot machine zone is characterized by an intense immersion during game play, causing a neglect of outside events and competing goals. Prior studies of EGM immersion have relied heavily upon retrospective self-report scales. Here, the authors attempt to identify behavioral and psychophysiological correlates of the immersion experience. In samples of undergraduate students and experienced EGM users from the community, they tested 2 potential behavioral me
