Chronic Respiratory Diseases (CRDs), such as Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), are leading causes of deaths worldwide. Although both Asthma and COPD are not curable, they can be managed by close monitoring of symptoms to prevent worsening of the condition. One key symptom that needs to be monitored is the occurrence of wheezing sounds during breathing since its early identification could prevent serious exacerbations. Since wheezing can happen randomly without warning, a long-term monitoring system with automatic wheeze detection could be extremely helpful to manage thes

A new entropy bound with low computational complexity for differential Shannon entropy estimation with kernel density approach is proposed in this study, which is based on defining a bound for the Kullback-Leibler divergence between two Gaussian mixture models. The proposed entropy bound is derived to provide computational efficiency without decreasing the accuracy in detecting heart sound segments in respiratory sound. It is shown both theoretically and experimentally that using the proposed bound in an adaptive threshold-based detection method gives very similar performance compared to that

Tracheomalacia, which softens the tracheal wall and leads to airway collapse during breathing, can be challenging to detect, especially in children, due to its vague symptoms and the invasive nature of standard diagnostic procedures. In this study, we developed a rabbit model of tracheomalacia by surgically removing a portion of the tracheal cartilage in New Zealand White rabbits. Breath sounds and airway pressure were recorded using a clinical-grade stethoscope setup. From each exhaled breath, 6,373 acoustic features were extracted, and 51 of these, which showed consistent and statistically s

Building upon the findings from the field of automated recognition of respiratory sound patterns, we propose a wearable wireless sensor implementing on-board respiratory sound acquisition and classification, to enable continuous monitoring of symptoms, such as asthmatic wheezing. Low-power consumption of such a sensor is required in order to achieve long autonomy. Considering that the power consumption of its radio is kept minimal if transmitting only upon (rare) occurrences of wheezing, we focus on optimizing the power consumption of the digital signal processor (DSP). Based on a comprehensiv

FOSTER is the first ever publicly available dataset of forcecardiography (FCG) signals with simultaneous recordings of conventional seismocardiography (SCG), phonocardiography (PCG), electrocardiography (ECG), and respiratory signals. The dataset contains recordings from 40 participants (20 males and 20 females) and aims to foster and facilitate research on non-invasive cardio-respiratory monitoring using mechanical sensors. All signals were acquired simultaneously to ensure precise temporal alignment for accurate analysis. Each recording lasts about 7 minutes and includes both long phases of

Background: Computerized adventitious respiratory sounds (ARS), such as crackles and wheezes, have been poorly explored in bronchiectasis, especially their measurement properties. This study aimed to test the reliability and validity of ARS in bronchiectasis. Methods: Respiratory sounds were recorded twice at 4 chest locations on 2 assessment sessions (7 days apart) in people with bronchiectasis and daily sputum expectoration. The total number of crackles, number of wheezes and wheeze occupation rate (%) were the parameters extracted. Results: 28 participants (9 men; 62 ± 12 y) were included.

BACKGROUND: Automatic detection or classification of adventitious sounds is useful to assist physicians in diagnosing or monitoring diseases such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and pneumonia. While computerised respiratory sound analysis, specifically for the detection or classification of adventitious sounds, has recently been the focus of an increasing number of studies, a standardised approach and comparison has not been well established.
OBJECTIVE: To provide a review of existing algorithms for the detection or classification of adventitious respiratory sounds. T

The experiment in rabbits demonstrated that the more narrow the tracheas were, the higher the frequency of respiratory sound was. The frequency of tracheal respiratory sound was about 50-100 Hz in normal rabbits. In mildly narrow frequency of respiratory sound was 50-200 Hz, in mediately narrow trachea 200-300Hz, in severely narrow trachea 400-700 Hz. 74 patients were studied. The patients with more severe inhalation injury had higher tone of respiratory sound and simultaneously showed dyspnea because their larynx-tracheas became more narrow due to edema. When high tone appeared obviously trac

In this paper, we present the pattern recognition methods proposed to classify respiratory sounds into normal and wheeze classes. We evaluate and compare the feature extraction techniques based on Fourier transform, linear predictive coding, wavelet transform and Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) in combination with the classification methods based on vector quantization, Gaussian mixture models (GMM) and artificial neural networks, using receiver operating characteristic curves. We propose the use of an optimized threshold to discriminate the wheezing class from the normal one. Also,

This work presents a detailed framework to detect the location of heart sound within the respiratory sound based on temporal fuzzy c-means (TFCM) algorithm. In the proposed method, respiratory sound is first divided into frames and for each frame, the logarithmic energy features are calculated. Then, these features are used to classify the respiratory sound as heart sound (HS containing lung sound) and non-HS (only lung sound) by the TFCM algorithm. The TFCM is the modified version fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm. While the FCM algorithm uses only the local information about the current frame, t

Lung sounds were recorded in three groups of 5 subjects, 2 conditions associated with pulmonary crackling (asbestosis and pulmonary oedema), and in normal non-smoking males. A technique was used which permitted extraction and analysis of the low-frequency sounds. Differences were evident in the 5-50 Hz range of the frequency spectra which allowed separation of all 3 groups. A prominent feature was the close similarity of the low-frequency sounds within the asbestos group when plotted on a scattergram. The findings suggest that alteration in low-frequency breath sound occurs in parenchymal lung

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a prevalent respiratory disease, and early diagnosis is crucial for timely intervention and improved prognosis. Respiratory sound analysis, with its non-invasive nature and ability to reflect airway pathology, shows great potential as an auxiliary diagnostic tool. However, existing methods often focus on detecting specific abnormal sounds, such as wheezing and crackling, rather than diagnosing diseases directly, Additionally, most approaches rely on single features or architectures, which limits diagnostic accuracy. To address these issues, this

OBJECTIVES: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide, with up to 70% of cases remaining undiagnosed. This paper proposes a COPD screening tool based on time-frequency representation features of self-recorded respiratory sounds.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Respiratory sound samples (breath and cough sounds) were extracted from COPD and asymptomatic non-COPD volunteers using a large, scientific-purpose database. We analyzed 39 time-frequency representation features of breath and cough sounds, combined with age, sex, and smoking status, using Autoenco

Sprague Dawley rats, previously infected with Phase-I Bordetella pertussis, developed more severe abnormal respiratory sounds than normal animals, but not coughing, when exposed to aerosolized capsaicin, one of several cough-inducing agents tested. Stethoscope examination suggested that greater production of pulmonary mucus might be occurring after capsaicin challenge of the infected animals, compared to the uninfected controls. Rats of three other strains gave characteristically different responses from the Sprague Dawleys. The administration of capsaicin to B. pertussis-infected rats may pro

In this paper, we investigated and evaluated various machine learning-based approaches for automatically detecting wheezing sounds. We conducted a comprehensive comparison of these proposed systems, assessing their classification performance through metrics such as Sensitivity, Specificity, and Accuracy. The main approach to developing a machine learning-based system for classifying respiratory sounds involved the combination of a technique for extracting features from an unknown input sound with a classification method to determine its belonging class. The characterization techniques used in

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study is to develop a method for detection of pathological respiratory sound, caused by bronchial asthma, with the aid of machine learning techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To build and train neural networks, we used the records of respiratory sounds of bronchial asthma patients at different stages of the disease (n=951) aged from several months to 47 years old and healthy volunteers (n=167). The sounds were recorded with calm breathing at four points: at the oral cavity, above the trachea, on the chest (second intercostal space on the right side), and at a point o

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is a highly prevalent respiratory disease affecting popular short-faced dog breeds such as Pugs and French bulldogs. BOAS causes significant morbidity, leading to poor exercise tolerance, sleep disorders and a shortened lifespan. Despite its severity, the disease is commonly missed by owners or disregarded by veterinary practitioners. A key clinical sign of BOAS is stertor, a low-frequency snoring sound. In recent years, a functional grading scheme has been introduced to semi-objectively grade BOAS based on the presence of stertor and other abn

BACKGROUND: Respiratory diseases in children are a common reason for physician visits. A diagnostic difficulty arises when parents hear wheezing that is no longer present during the medical consultation. Thus, an outpatient objective tool for recognition of wheezing is of clinical value.
METHOD: We developed a wheezing recognition algorithm from recorded respiratory sounds with a Smartphone placed near the mouth. A total of 186 recordings were obtained in a pediatric emergency department, mostly in toddlers (mean age 20 months). After exclusion of recordings with artefacts and those with a si

This paper is concerned with the problem of cancellation of heart sounds from the acquired respiratory sounds using a new joint time-delay and signal-estimation (JTDSE) procedure. Multiresolution discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is first applied to decompose the signals into several subbands. To accurately separate the heart sounds from the acquired respiratory sounds, time-delay estimation (TDE) is performed iteratively in each subband using two adaptation mechanisms that minimize the sum of squared errors between these signals. The time delay is updated using a nonlinear adaptation, namely t
