Endobronchial Glomus Tumor in a Child.

Glomus tumors (GTs) are rare, usually benign, mesenchymal neoplasms typically located in the cutaneous tissues of the extremities. Visceral locations have been reported in ∼5% of cases. The average age at diagnosis is 42 years. GTs originating in the respiratory tract of pediatric patients are exceedingly rare. We report a 16-year-old male with a GT of the right lower lobe bronchus.

Respiratory Tract Amyloidosis. State-of-the-Art Review with a Focus on Pulmonary Involvement.

Amyloidosis is a constellation of disease entities characterized by abnormal extracellular deposition and accumulation of protein and protein derivatives, which show apple-green birefringence when stained with Congo red and viewed under polarized light. Amyloid can infiltrate virtually all organ systems and can display multiple and diverse imaging findings. Pathologically, respiratory involvement occurs in 50 % of patients with amyloidosis, and its clinical signs and symptoms vary depending on whether the disease is systemic or localized. The four main patterns of respiratory tract involvement

A Rare Case of a Neuroendocrine Tumor With Intracardiac Metastasis: Management and Literature Review.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare neoplasms originating from the neuroendocrine system. While they can develop sporadically throughout the body, they are mostly found in the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, pancreas, and thymus. NETs can be classified into low-grade indolent tumors, intermediate-grade tumors, or high-grade aggressive cancers. These tumors have the potential to metastasize to various parts of the body, with the liver being the primary site for metastases. However, it is extremely rare for NETs to metastasize to the heart. Here, we present a unique case of intracar

Neuroendocrine ampullary tumors: spectrum of disease including the first report of a neuroendocrine carcinoma of non-small cell type.

Primary neuroendocrine tumors of the ampulla of Vater are rare. These tumors, like those of the respiratory tract and remainder of the gastrointestinal tract, appear along a histologic spectrum of increasing malignancy from low-grade carcinoid tumors to high-grade small cell undifferentiated cancers. We herein describe the characteristics of these ampullary neoplasms and report the first case of a neuroendocrine carcinoma of non-small cell type, which represents the middle of this histologic continuum. This tumor seems to follow a more aggressive course than the carcinoid tumor but less aggres

Subretinal tumour in a patient with a limited form of Wegener's granulomatosis.

In 1939 F. Wegener published a report concerning a peculiar febrile syndrome with necrotizing inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, focal glomerulonephritis and systemic angiitis (Wegener 1939). Clinically Wegener's granulomatosis can be divided into a limited and a generalized form. We describe a patient presenting with unilateral ocular symptoms suspicious of a neoplasm, one episode of angina pectoris and general malaise without any clinical signs of upper respiratory tract involvement. Before Wegener's granulomatosis was diagnosed by a positive titre of antineutrophil cytoplasmic ant

Thymic carcinoma with glandular differentiation arising in a congenital thymic cyst.

A case of thymic carcinoma with glandular differentiation arising in congenital thymic cyst in a 50-year-old male is reported. Neoplasia in congenital thymic cyst is a rare phenomenon and is seldom associated with glandular differentiation. It is important to differentiate these neoplasms from carcinomas of the lower respiratory tract and from thymic carcinomas with secondary cystic degeneration, in view of their relatively good prognosis and the therapeutic implications.

Tracheal carcinoma following short term tracheostomy in childhood (a case report).

Carcinoma of the trachea is rare in comparison to other neoplasms of the respiratory tract. Cigarette smoking has been implicated in its aetiology, but unlike carcinoma of the bronchus and lung, the incidence of tracheal carcinoma has not risen with tobacco consumption (Hajdu et al., 1970; Ranke et al., 1962). It seems, then, that there is some mechanism or mechanisms which render the trachea especially resistant to malignant change.

[Combined gastric and respiratory heterotopia in the rectum suggesting malignancy].

Heterotopia refers to the presence of normal cells or tissue located in anatomically unusual sites of the body. In the gastrointestinal tract, most heterotopic lesions do not cause any symptoms, but rarely, they can be mistaken for neoplasms during endoscopic examinations. A 45-year-old man presented with lower abdominal pain and blood in the stool. Macroscopically, a polypoid lesion was found and resected by endoscopic submucosal dissection. Histologically, ectopic gastric mucosa, salivary gland-like structures compatible with bronchial glands, and respiratory epithelium were found. This comb

Lower respiratory tract amyloidosis: Presentation, survival and prognostic factors. A multicenter consecutive case series.

Lower-respiratory-tract (LRT) amyloidosis has rarely been investigated. Our study presents characteristics, outcomes and survival of LRT amyloidosis. This multicenter retrospective study, from 1995 to 2017, included 73 patients with amyloidosis and LRT involvement. Respiratory patterns were: tracheobronchial (n = 17), nodular (n = 10), interstitial (n = 14) or composite (several respiratory involvements, n = 32). Interstitial and composite patterns were associated with multi-organ amyloidosis (n = 37, 80%) while tracheobronchial and nodular patterns were associated with organ-limited amyloidos

[Simultaneously diagnosed triple primary neoplasms--a case report].

Reported is a case of 71-year-old man who had triple primary neoplasms that were diagnosed simultaneously on admission. He visited our hospital for examination of an abnormal mass shadow seen in the right lower lobe of his chest in a roentgenogram. That was determined as being a small cell lung cancer. We simultaneously detected that a moderately differentiated tubular gastric adenocarcinoma and an olfactory groove meningioma were overlapped as well. Attention must be paid to multiple primary neoplasms, since some of these malignancies are predicted to overlap and the percentage of overlapped

Detection and typization of HPV genotypes in subjects with oral and upper respiratory tract lesions, Milan, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) is common among healthy individuals but causes and implications of persistent infections are under evaluation in the pathogenesis of head and neck neoplasms. METHODS: This was a retrospective study evaluating the prevalence of high-risk (HR), probable HR and low-risk (LR) HPV types in patients reporting signs/symptoms of oral and upper respiratory tract lesions. Individuals attending between 2019 and 2022 a University Hospital in Milan, Italy, with risk factors for HPV (unprotected oral sex and/or previous documentation of HPV infection in oral and

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma in the retroperitoneum.

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma is an uncommon neoplasm and occurs most frequently in the upper respiratory tract. Herein, we reported a solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma in the retroperitoneum. A 28-year-old man presented with obstructive jaundice and a retroperitoneal tumor. Ultrasound-guided biopsy confirmed that the lesion was a plasma cell neoplasm. A detailed investigation showed that no other sites were involved. The tumor got a moderate reduction following local irradiation, and a complete remission was achieved after 12 courses of adjuvant chemotherapy. Therefore, the possibil

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the small intestine presenting as small bowel obstruction with intussusception: a case report.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps (IFP) are rare benign neoplasms most commonly occurring within the respiratory tract but are rarely also observed in the gastro-intestinal tract. Herein we present the case of a 73-year-old female presenting with ileo-ileal intussusception secondary to IFP. The patient was treated with emergency laparotomy with segmental bowel resection and primary anastomosis. Histopathological analysis of the excised bowel segment initially revealed a low-grade, mural based spindle cell neoplasm with surrounding benign, reactive lymphadenopathy. Immunohistochemical analysis demons

Respiratory system toxicity induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors: A real-world study based on the FDA adverse event reporting system database.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), the treatment of multiple cancer types, can be associated with respiratory system adverse events (AEs). The aim of this study is to quantify the association of respiratory system AEs and ICIs and to characterize the profiles of ICI-related respiratory system complications from Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) data. METHODS: The disproportionality of respiratory system AE-related ICIs based on FAERS data from January 2014 to September 2021 was analyzed using the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and information compon

Solitary fibrous tumour of the pleura presenting as a giant intrathoracic mass.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are relatively rare neoplasms thought to originate from the submesothelial connective tissue. SFTs have been described in a variety of sites, including the pleura, orbit, lower respiratory tract, peritoneal cavity and heart. These neoplasms are usually benign, though locally aggressive, and metastatic behaviour has been observed in some cases. We describe a case of a 61-year-old man presenting with weight loss, poor appetite, malaise, worsening dyspnoea on exertion and lower extremity oedema, who was found to have a gigantic-21×21 cm-tumour occupying the entire

Primary cardiac tumours in the paediatric population.

Primary cardiac tumours are relatively rare in the paediatric population, and they may occur with different signs and symptoms in foetal or post-natal life. The clinical manifestations of cardiac tumours in foetal life may include arrhythmias, congestive heart failure and hydrops. In post-natal life, cardiac tumours may cause cyanosis, respiratory distress, myocardial dysfunction, valvular insufficiency, arrhythmias, inflow or outflow tract obstructions and sudden death. Surgical treatment is essential when symptoms are present, while the role of medical therapy can merely be palliative. Resul

Primary ovarian neuroendocrine neoplasia with concurrent large epithelial borderline ovarian tumor, coexistent with non-malignant pleural effusion and multiple uterine fibroids: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms are a group of neoplasms often originating from the neuroendocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and respiratory tract. Neuroendocrine neoplasms rarely occur in female reproductive organs and less than a hundred cases of ovarian high-grade lesions have been reported in the literature so far. Fewer still are cases reported in the literature associated with a borderline epithelial tumor in the same ovary. Owing to the rarity of the condition, there is a lack of specific guidelines for staging, and optimal management of these tumors. CASE PRE

Lymph node metastasis from a primary skin carcinoid tumour.

Carcinoid tumours are uncommon neuroendocrine neoplasms that may be found anywhere in the body but are most commonly seen in the gastro-intestinal and respiratory tracts. Metastasis to the skin occurs in a small proportion of these but primary cutaneous carcinoid tumours are exceedingly rare. There have been five previous cases of primary carcinoid tumours occurring in the skin. To our knowledge, this is the first report of metastasis from a primary cutaneous carcinoid tumour.
