Ultrahigh field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (≥ 7 T) has the potential to provide superior spatial resolution and unique image contrast. Apart from radiofrequency transmit inhomogeneities in the body at this field strength, imaging of the upper abdomen faces additional challenges associated with motion-induced ghosting artifacts. To address these challenges, the goal of this work was to develop a technique for high-resolution free-breathing upper abdominal MRI at 7 T with a large field of view. Free-breathing 3D gradient-recalled echo (GRE) water-excited radial stack-of-stars data were acq

Free-breathing abdominal chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) has great potential for clinical application, but its technical implementation remains challenging. This study aimed to propose and evaluate a free-breathing abdominal CEST sequence. The proposed sequence employed respiratory gating (ResGat) to synchronize the data acquisition with respiratory motion and performed a water presaturation module before the CEST saturation to abolish the influence of respiration-induced repetition time variation. In vivo experiments were performed to compare different respiratory motion-control

BACKGROUND: The value of late-gadolinium-enhancement (LGE) imaging in the diagnosis and management of pediatric and congenital heart disease is clear; however current acquisition techniques are susceptible to error and artifacts when performed in children because of children's higher heart rates, higher prevalence of sinus arrhythmia, and inability to breath-hold. Commonly used techniques in pediatric LGE imaging include breath-held segmented FLASH (segFLASH) and steady-state free precession-based (segSSFP) imaging. More recently, single-shot SSFP techniques with respiratory motion-corrected a

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) using an "on-board" x-ray imaging device integrated into a radiation therapy system has recently been made available for patient positioning, target localization, and adaptive treatment planning. One of the challenges for gantry mounted image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) systems is the slow acquisition of projections for cone-beam CT (CBCT), which makes them sensitive to any patient motion during the scans. Aiming at motion artifact reduction, four-dimensional CBCT (4D CBCT) techniques have been introduced, where a surrogate for the target's motion profi

The inherently slow acquisition speed of MRI makes abdominal imaging highly sensitive to respiratory motion artifacts. Since the early days of MRI, the development of respiratory motion compensation techniques has been an active research topic, and this field has seen substantial progress. Despite these advances, the majority of these techniques are not used in daily clinical practice, and motion management methods used in clinical abdominal MRI today have changed little over the past decades. This observation points to a significant gap between technical innovation and clinical translation in

BACKGROUND: Four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) is an advanced imaging technique designed to capture anatomical motion over time, enabling more accurate evaluation of tumor and organ motion owing to respiration, while minimizing motion-related artifacts. 4DCT employs two primary scanning modes-volume (cine) mode and helical mode-each with distinct clinical implications. A comprehensive evaluation of both approaches is therefore essential prior to clinical implementation.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare volume and helical 4DCT scan modes in terms of image quality, dimensional accu

Positron emission tomography (PET) images can be compromised by respiratory motion, leading to a decreased standardized uptake value (SUV) of the lesion and overestimation of the metabolic tumor volume (MTV). This study aimed to determine the optimal settings for auto-gating, a deviceless respiratory synchronization technique, using advanced intelligent clear-IQ engines (AiCE) and clear adaptive low-noise method (CaLM) reconstruction conditions. We performed phantom and clinical studies on 57 patients with pulmonary lesions. We acquired images at various %count settings (nongated, 30%, 50%, an

The objective of this article is to review technical aspects, discuss potential clinical indications for MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and demonstrate the spectrum of diagnostic findings in benign, postoperative, and malignant conditions. We describe our current imaging protocol in comparison with other available techniques. Using a non-breath-hold, heavily T2-weighted fast-spin-echo (FSE) sequence with or without respiratory gating we obtained coronal and axial source images and maximum intensity projections (MIPs) in 102 patients with suspected abnormalities of the biliary or pancreatic

In the present study, a balanced steady-state free precession pulse sequence combined with compressed sensing was applied to hyperpolarized (129) Xe lung imaging in spontaneously breathing mice. With the aid of fast imaging techniques, the temporal resolution was markedly improved in the resulting images. Using these protocols and respiratory gating, (129) Xe lung images in end-inspiratory and end-expiratory phases were obtained successfully. The application of these techniques for pulmonary functional imaging made it possible to simultaneously evaluate regional ventilation and gas exchange in

PURPOSE: To develop a motion correction for Positron-Emission-Tomography (PET) using simultaneously acquired magnetic-resonance (MR) images within 90 s.
METHODS: A 90 s MR acquisition allows the generation of a cardiac and respiratory motion model of the body trunk. Thereafter, further diagnostic MR sequences can be recorded during the PET examination without any limitation. To provide full PET scan time coverage, a sensor fusion approach maps external motion signals (respiratory belt, ECG-derived respiration signal) to a complete surrogate signal on which the retrospective data binning is pe

PURPOSE: Micro-CT is commonly employed for lung imaging of mice; prospective gating allows for in-vivo imaging of free-breathing subjects. While this technique is successfully executed for healthy animals, results are less consistent for some disease models whose symptoms include irregular or unstable respiration. The purpose of this work is to repair the quality of high-blur images that arise from respiration instability using a retrospective method of motion reduction which identifies the individual x-ray projection images contributing most to the motion blur. Reconstructions were performed

Current diagnostic tools for the assessment of lung function are limited by global measurements or the need for radioactive tracers. Ideally, these tools should allow quantitative, regional distinct analyses without exposure to radiation. The current paper presents oxygen-enhanced functional MRI for assessment of lung ventilation. First applied in humans in 1996, a considerable amount of experience is now available on 1.5T scanners. The generation of quantitative T1-maps shows a high clinical potential. Low-field MR scanners, which are mostly open-designed, are especially interesting for funct

A cone beam micro-CT has previously been utilized along with a pressure-tracking respiration sensor to acquire prospectively gated images of both wild-type mice and various adult murine disease models. While the pressure applied to the abdomen of the subject by this sensor is small and is generally without physiological effect, certain disease models of interest, as well as very young animals, are prone to atelectasis with added pressure, or they generate too weak a respiration signal with this method to achieve optimal prospective gating. In this work we present a new fibre-optic displacement

The aim of this study was to investigate the utility of different gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted gradient-echo techniques in excretory MR urography. In 74 urologic patients, excretory MR urography was performed using various T1-weighted gradient-echo (GRE) sequences after injection of gadolinium-DTPA and low-dose furosemide. The examinations included conventional GRE sequences and echo-planar imaging (GRE EPI), both obtained with 3D data sets and 2D projection images. Breath-hold acquisition was used primarily. In 20 of 74 examinations, we compared breath-hold imaging with respiratory gating.

BACKGROUND: Free-breathing gated cone-beam computed tomography (gCBCT), which captures a specific anatomy coinciding with a preset gating window in the breathing cycle, is routinely prescribed to gating lung SBRT patients for pretreatment setup verification. However, a half-fan gCBCT scan can take 2-8 min (for a typical gating duty cycle of 30%-60% and patient breathing period of 3-6 s) on a C-arm linear accelerator because the gantry movement is interrupted and resumed by the respiratory gating signal multiple times over the scan. The long scan time increases patient on-table time, leading to

Respiratory-gated radiotherapy techniques have been introduced into the stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) to manage intrafraction organ motions, as follows: respiratory gating using optical tracking, respiratory gating using X-ray fluoroscopy, and breath hold or force shallow breathing. Particularly in respiratory-gated radiotherapy for lung cancer, optical tracking techniques have been performed by tracking the up-and-down movement of an infrared reflective marker placed on the abdomen or around xiphoid tip of the patient to obtain respiratory waveforms (e.g., real-time position managemen

Cardiac diffusion weighted-magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) has slowly developed due to its technical difficulties. However, this limitation could be overcome by advanced techniques, including a stimulated echo technique and a gradient moment nulling technique. This study aimed to develop and validate a high-order DWI sequence, using echo-planar imaging (EPI) and second-order motion-compensated (M012) diffusion gradient applied to cardiac imaging in small-sized animals with fast heart and respiratory rates, and to investigate the feasibility of cardiac DWI, diagnosing acute myocardial injury i

BACKGROUND: Respiratory motion during the single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) acquisition can cause blurring artifacts in the reconstructed images, leading to inaccurate estimates for activity and absorbed doses.
PURPOSE: To address the impact of respiratory motion, we utilized a new optical surface imaging (OSI) system to extract the respiratory signals for phase sorting and verified its effectiveness through simulation and patient data. Additionally, we implemented GPU-accelerated motion-incorporated reconstruction algorithms for the SPECT projections, integrating motion info
