IMPORTANCE: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sleep-related movement disorder that affects approximately 3% of US adults to a clinically significant extent and can cause substantial sleep disturbance.
OBSERVATIONS: Restless legs syndrome is characterized by an overwhelming urge to move the limbs, typically the legs, often accompanied by unpleasant limb sensations (eg, achiness, tingling). Symptoms, provoked by immobility, are relieved while moving and are typically present or most severe in the evening or at night. Restless legs syndrome symptoms may lead to difficulty falling asleep, staying

Restless legs syndrome (RLS), with a lifetime prevalence of up to 10%, is a frequent neurological disease and the most common movement disorder in sleep. A compulsive urge to move the legs with sensory symptoms and sleep disturbances can significantly impair the quality of life. Furthermore, RLS frequently occurs as a comorbidity to various internal and neurological diseases. It is diagnosed clinically based on the five essential diagnostic criteria. For treatment, an iron deficiency should first be excluded. Drugs approved for the treatment of RLS include dopaminergics (L-DOPA/benserazide) an

Only nine patients with olanzapine-induced restless legs syndrome (RLS) have been reported in the literature to our knowledge. We describe two patients with olanzapine-induced RLS treated at our hospital and review the nine reported patients. There were five women and six men aged between 28 and 62 years in the overall group. RLS symptoms emerged at olanzapine doses between 2.5 and 20mg. The symptoms improved in all patients when the dose was reduced and immediately disappeared when the medication was stopped. International Restless Legs Scale (IRLS) scores ranged from 10 to 35. Three patients

INTRODUCTION: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common condition characterized by paresthesia and an urge to move. Predominantly, symptoms occur at rest in the evening or at night, and they are alleviated by moving the affected extremity. RLS prevalence in the general population has been estimated to be approximately 5%.
AREAS COVERED: This review presents all options for the treatment of RLS.
EXPERT OPINION: Pharmacological treatment should be limited to those patients who suffer from clinically relevant RLS, that is, when symptoms impair the patient's quality of life, daytime functioning,

INTRODUCTION: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a chronic sensorimotor disorder where patients complain of an almost irresistible urge to move their legs. This urge can often be accompanied by pain or other unpleasant sensations, it either occurs or worsens with rest particularly at night, and improves with activity. The International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group has established four essential criteria for clinical diagnosis of RLS.
STATE OF ART: Affecting an estimated 7.2 to 11.5% of the adult population, the symptoms of RLS may be associated with significant sleep disturbance and may ha

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common movement disorder wherein sensory motor symptoms are observed in the limbs mainly during sleep and quiet wakefulness. The diagnostic criteria for RLS were established in 1995 by the International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG) and revised in 2003. The prevalence of RLS in Europe and North America was reported to be between 5% and 12%. On the other hand, the prevalence of RLS in Asia was lesser than that in Europe and North America: it was estimated to be less than 4%. This difference might be associated with vacial, cultural, and language differences. Genetic

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) may be a risk factor for vascular diseases and is associated with renal failure or deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate. Recently, elevated tHcy concentrations were observed in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly those under levodopa treatment. Our objective was to determine whether changes in tHcy are also found in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) in relation to levodopa treatment and whether folate and vitamins B6 and B12 play a role in RLS.
METHODS: In a total of 228 subjects, tHcy and B vitamin status (vita

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the limbs accompanied by uncomfortable sensations, leading to sleep disturbances. It is associated with psychiatric comorbidities and a decreased quality of life. RLS is common and most severe among females and the elderly. It may be primary or secondary to other conditions and may be familial. Linkage to several chromosomal loci have been demonstrated. The pathogenesis of RLS involves dopaminergic dysfunction, iron metabolism, and abnormalities in supraspinal inhibition. The mainstay of RLS t

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) and Tourette's syndrome (TS) share some common features, including the phenomenology of sensations relieved by movements, but few studies have examined the links between RLS and TS. We examined RLS and other TS comorbidities in 144 probands with TS or chronic tics and their parents. RLS was present in 10% of probands and 23% of parents with no gender differences. RLS in probands was linked significantly to maternal RLS but not paternal RLS, suggesting that a maternal RLS factor may contribute to the variable expression of TS.

Despite recent attempts to better characterize restless legs syndrome (RLS), this neurologic disorder remains poorly understood. The relationship between idiopathic and secondary and between familial and sporadic (nonfamilial) cases have not been previously defined. We studied 54 patients (29 women and 25 men) who satisfied the diagnostic criteria for RLS. The mean age of the patients was 62.69 +/- 13.82 years, and the mean age at onset was 34.13 +/- 20.30 years. We found that 92% of patients with idiopathic RLS (without neuropathy) had a family history of RLS, whereas only 13% of those with n

Restless legs syndrome is a frequent dyssomnia with well-known clinical features but uncertain origin and treatment. This paper describes a case of restless legs syndrome worsened by paroxetine. A possible pathogenic hypothesis related to the attributed neurochemical properties of the drug is proposed.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder with a obvious circadian rhythm, as its symptoms often occur or worsen only in the evening or at night. The mechanisms behind the rhythms of RLS have not yet been fully elucidated. This review explores possible causes for the circadian fluctuations of the symptomatology, including the levels of iron, dopamine, melatonin, melanocortin, and thyroid-stimulating hormone in the brain, as well as conditions such as peripheral hypoxia and microvascular function disorders. The metabolic disturbances of the substances above can create a pathologic

Disturbances in sleep and wakefulness are important symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) and are associated with negative effects on patients' quality of life. The analysis of literature on the relationship between RLS and PD revealed three main hypotheses explaining the relatively high incidence of RLS in PD: (1) RLS can be considered as an early (prodromal) manifestation or a predictor of PD that can outpace its main symptoms by several years (by analogy with conduct disorder during sleep with REM); (2) the high incidence of RLS in the advanced stage of PD may be associated with augmentation

OBJECTIVE: Autonomic dysfunction in patients with RLS has been described in some domains; however, detailed studies on this subject are limited and report conflicting results. In this study, we aimed to evaluate autonomic functions electrophysiologically and clinically in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS).
METHODS: Fifty-two adult patients with RLS and 40 healthy controls were enrolled in this prospective study. Electrophysiological tests of sympathetic skin response (SSR) and RR interval variability (RRIV) analysis were performed, and the SCOPA-AUT questionnaire was applied to evalu

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to determine if iron supplementation effectively treats children with restless legs syndrome (RLS), the time to improvement or resolution of symptoms, and patient characteristics (family history of RLS, secondary sleep disorders, medical diagnoses, and/or mental health diagnoses) that may affect outcome. METHODS.: This was a retrospective chart review of children between 5 and 18 years old who were diagnosed with RLS at the pediatric sleep disorders clinic at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Documented RLS treatment approaches included su

The prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and its association with the clinical features of Behçet's disease (BD) has not previously been elucidated. The inflammatory character, central nervous system involvement and neuropathies of BD led to this investigation of RLS risk in BD patients. A total of 116 BD patients and 104 healthy control subjects were included; seven BD patients were excluded because of concurrent diseases, pregnancy or alcohol misuse that might cause RLS symptoms, and the remaining 109 BD patients were included in the analysis. The prevalence of RLS was significantly hi

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is one of the most common neurological disorders. The diagnosis is mainly based on the patient's report of the characteristic symptoms and further on the response to dopaminergic treatment. In the past years, transcranial B-Mode sonography (TCS) of the mesencephalic brainstem has been introduced as a promising new method to assist the diagnostic approach to RLS. This review of literature describes the typical TCS findings in RLS including hypoechogenicity of the substantia nigra and raphe as well as hyperechogenicity of the red nucleus. The diagnostic parameters fo

The present study explores the frequency of RLS in PD and focuses on the clinical differences between patients with and without restless legs syndrome (RLS). A cross-sectional study was designed, comprising 114 patients diagnosed with PD. Those patients positive for RLS were assessed for intensity of the syndrome (IRLS). We compared the clinical characteristics of the patients with and without RLS, using specific scales: Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS I-IV), quality of life (Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire, PDQ 39), sleep symptoms (Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale, PDSS), and
